  • It seems that the famous "Trigger's Broom" joke from the TV show "Only Fools And Horses" was not the original... and David Jason was involved the first time too!

The joke's way older than Open All Hours, it's in fact over 2000 years old. This is the Ship Of Theseus paradox, which was identified in Ancient Greek times. Their version was about a ship: If you replaced every single piece of a ship, is it still the same ship? And what if you took all the replaced pieces and reassembled them, could they then both be the original ship?

The question formed part of my University philosophy course too.
It is a question which much exercises our heritage steam railways to this very day!

I have often refer to only fools and horses sketch as I use the same "logic" when I talk about my PC. My PC in essence is the EXACT same machine it was when I first built it in 1995 ish ... just every single component is different. Anyways thanks for this I never knew it was on open all hours

Open All Hours didn't do it first either. Plutarch did it first over 1900 years ago: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_of_Theseus
The story is also well known in the form of "George Washington's axe" and "Jeannot's knife".

the human body replaces cells to the point where in 1 or 2 years we are completely different to version of ourselves 2 years prior. But we still consider us the same being.

DALEKSLAYER1 In the first episode of the last series, the Doctor used the same broom analogy when talking to a self aware robot that keeps replacing parts of its body. I just realized that after watching this video and thought it was funny.
