Without a doubt one of the most iconic sketches in British comedy history. Right up there with Four Candles and the Dead Parrot sketch. To save anyone else googling! "The Ship of Theseus" is a thought-provoking philosophical paradox and a famous topic of discussion in metaphysics. It raises questions about identity and change. The paradox goes like this: Imagine a ship, known as the Ship of Theseus, that over time has had all of its wooden parts replaced with new ones. Eventually, every single part of the ship has been replaced. Is it still the same ship, or has it become a completely different entity?
@@AM2K2 The answer depends on whether the vessel/broom/computer/etc has the same registration number. A classic scene. It takes nearly three minutes to set up the punchline (much like Ronnie Corbett's monologues) where there are 9 other smaller jokes to keep the viewers engaged. Even though we all know the joke is coming, it's still funny. So much so that I'd love to be able to go back in time and watch all these episodes for the first time.
Something that always gets overlooked is the fact that Boycie, who clearly has money and some form of success, is still hanging around the same pub and cafe as the likes of del and trigger. Part showing off, part he doesn't fit in with the upper classes as much as he wants too preferring to be the one above everyone in the group.
I wouldn't say he was rich he came from the same background as del did, owns a second hand car dealership of witch most of the cars are Dodgy and has some very shady associates, yes he has a bit of money but no he was never "rich" he just liked to act as if he was

Triggers broom, is a perfect example of “The ship of Theseus” improving on the original idea through simplicity and reductionism. Clarity: It's simpler. A broom has a head and a handle. A ship has 'planks' in the example, but also much more critical timbers that probably can't be replaced easily. For example, if replacing the main keel wood requires the whole ship to be dismantled, then it's a complete rebuild which ruins the example. Replacing a piece of an object that doesn't involve dismantling the residual object, so is a better example. The fact that there is only one other piece makes it even more beautiful. Semantics: It's Trigger's Broom. The broom that belongs to Trigger. He wears it out while sweeping roads, and when he replaces the head or the handle then it still his broom. Whether it is the same 'Trigger's Broom' is the debate, but it is definitely a 'Trigger's Broom'. Theseus was long dead when the planks of his ship were all replaced. They never sailed on the sea, which brings questions about whether something can be considered a ship if it's never sailed, rather than an ornament in the shape of a ship. Subject matter: Theseus wasn't famous for using the same ship for a long time and needing to replace lots of it. The fact it ended up in a museum for a long time is not relevant to the deeds of Theseus. Trigger however is a street sweeper who used a broom for a very long time. He wore out his broom a lot, and needed to replace parts.
🤣🤣 what's even funnier is you've written a short essay on triggers broom. Here's one from me...the broom was a broom until it was replaced with broom parts therefore rendering it another broom so in actuality it's still a broom and always was a broom triggers not wrong.
The difference is that, with the Ship of Theseus thought experiment, the old parts are taken away one by one, and replaced with new parts. Theyre restored, and put back together. The question is which is - Which is Theseus's ship?
Apparently the UK ( one of only two still flying) Lancaster has just had a new tail made and fitted. When I read about this it brought back memories of Triggers Broom. The backstory behind Trigger constantly calling Rodney Dave is as follows: It was never meant for Trigger. However, Roger Lloyd Pack in his early days suffered from rare mental condition that kept him forgetting names of characters around him.
