    Also, RIP Roy Heather (20 May 1935 - 3 September 2014) - well remembered for playing cafe owner Sid. Even though the roles offered were sadly small, Roy showed versatility and displayed screen presence - such as the assassin Lowe in the 1985 tv series Edge of Darkness. Thanks for the memories Roy.

      To save anyone else googling! "The Ship of Theseus" is a thought-provoking philosophical paradox and a famous topic of discussion in metaphysics. It raises questions about identity and change. The paradox goes like this:
      Imagine a ship, known as the Ship of Theseus, that over time has had all of its wooden parts replaced with new ones. Eventually, every single part of the ship has been replaced. Is it still the same ship, or has it become a completely different entity?

    Without a doubt one of the most iconic sketches in British comedy history. Right up there with Four Candles and the Dead Parrot sketch. Trigger called Rodney Dave for over 20 years and it never got tired. The quality of the physical acting is also at the highest level. Roger Lloyd-Pack could say more with an expression than most actors with a line of dialogue. Same of course with Del Boy falling through the bar. If you look back through the greatest British comedy shows it's often the physical acting that stands out. John Cleese in Fawlty Towers, Rowan Atkinson in Blackadder, Joanna Lumley in Ab Fab, Fry and Laurie in Jeeves and Wooster. You can watch any of these sketches a thousand times and they never get old. RIP Roger.

    The backstory behind Trigger constantly calling Rodney Dave is as follows: It was never meant for Trigger. However, Roger Lloyd Pack in his early days suffered from rare mental condition that kept him forgetting names of characters around him. At first it really was Lloyd Pack unintentionally doing that, but in time his condition has improved. But, since Dave thing was simply perfect for Trigger, it was simply kept afterwards. In the first episode of the show, when Trigger and Rodney appear together for the first time, Trigger calling Rodney Dave was actually an ad lib by Lloyd Pack. This was confirmed by John Sullivan and Lloyd Pack.

    Triggers broom, is a perfect example of “The ship of Theseus” improving on the original idea through simplicity and reductionism.
    Clarity: It's simpler. A broom has a head and a handle. A ship has 'planks' in the example, but also much more critical timbers that probably can't be replaced easily. For example, if replacing the main keel wood requires the whole ship to be dismantled, then it's a complete rebuild which ruins the example. Replacing a piece of an object that doesn't involve dismantling the residual object, so is a better example. The fact that there is only one other piece makes it even more beautiful.
    Semantics: It's Trigger's Broom. The broom that belongs to Trigger. He wears it out while sweeping roads, and when he replaces the head or the handle then it still his broom. Whether it is the same 'Trigger's Broom' is the debate, but it is definitely a 'Trigger's Broom'. Theseus was long dead when the planks of his ship were all replaced. They never sailed on the sea, which brings questions about whether something can be considered a ship if it's never sailed, rather than an ornament in the shape of a ship.
    Subject matter: Theseus wasn't famous for using the same ship for a long time and needing to replace lots of it. The fact it ended up in a museum for a long time is not relevant to the deeds of Theseus. Trigger however is a street sweeper who used a broom for a very long time. He wore out his broom a lot, and needed to replace parts.

    • @BritishGuy1979
      @BritishGuy1979 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      🤣🤣 what's even funnier is you've written a short essay on triggers broom.
      Here's one from me...the broom was a broom until it was replaced with broom parts therefore rendering it another broom so in actuality it's still a broom and always was a broom triggers not wrong.

    • @RylanStorm

      The difference is that, with the Ship of Theseus thought experiment, the old parts are taken away one by one, and replaced with new parts. Theyre restored, and put back together.
