    I did not know of the game's performance issues. I do know that its frametimes aren't evenly paced, as I do sometimes play with MSI afterburner overlayed, but I can't recall seeing things be this bad or the frametime overlay go to shit. PC gaming moment
    Though I started the game, and I'm really loving the experience. I haven't gotten too far in yet though, I'm currently looking for Charlie in the game

    Crazy how I played through the whole 1 and 2 without noticing this issue. Mostly played on Steam Deck capping the frame rate manually to 30 but I suspect it would've worked similar to the Rivia Tuner results.
    Also now when trying to test this on my PC all the alpha effects and textures were broken and not properly clipped. Like Ryo's hair would have a green rectangle surrounding it so seems like this isn't the only issue

    Fck, I’m just starting the game on Steam (Big Picture mode with a PS4 controller) and I already noticed the game frame limit is up to 30fps. Worth mentioning I play csgo at high frames, and I noticed these constant dropping frames in Shenmue 1.
    I’ve wished to play this saga time ago but now I have that bad feeling this will be a painful experience to play.
    I’m thinking in getting a handheld console and emulate it. I’ve watched many videos playing Dreamcast games and so far they seem to play well.

    Can someone try if dxvk fixes the issue since someone said it's not a problem on the steam deck and proton is essentially the same thing? Would be interested in buying since it's on a sale on Steam right now but with a big issue like this I'm not interested. Btw I rewatched the Digital Foundry review from 2018 and John barely mentions this issue and puts the blame on his 75hz monitor. With how incredibly picky they are about frame pacing I wonder if he was blind(ed) from nostalgia in that episode or something. Thanks in advance!

    Dang, and during the cutscenes, too? That's a shame. Especially since you bought merchandise.

  • @TheOrangeMatty
    @TheOrangeMatty 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The problem with the console versions is you can't mod it for start off and there is some mods that are really good in my opinion and second off the cutscenes on the console version cannot be modded to become 16:9 either and that takes some of the immersion away as the black borders can be annoying especially if you are playing in 16:9 mode for the gameplay itself. I think maybe the Demul emulator on the PC can run these games almost perfect so that would be another way to play them on PC assuming you have a powerful enough PC. Oh and I think Special K used to fix this problem but it doesn't seem to anymore after the final patch they released for the game broke it which sucks.

    • @gamingblowsofficial
      @gamingblowsofficial  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      4:3 cutscenes are barely noticeable, but the framerate absolutely is. Isn’t there also occasional visual garbage introduced in 16:9 cutscenes?

    • @TheOrangeMatty
      @TheOrangeMatty 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gamingblowsofficial Well I find them to be quite noticeable especially Shenmue 2 as that game had black borders on the top and bottom as well. Also in 16:9 there is some things you can see that you are definitely not supposed to but after playing both games throughout with 16:9 cutscenes most cutscenes don't seem to have that problem. I have asked on the Shenmue Dojo forums to see if anyone can fix the frame pacing issues on the PC because it has definitely been done before and hopefully someone can fix it again as that would make the PC version the best version to play IMHO.

    • @gamingblowsofficial
      @gamingblowsofficial  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only way to fix it (or so I’ve heard) is using an external program called Cheat Engine and disassembling a memory region and replacing it with useless code. That isn’t a reasonable ask of your players who want to play a properly functioning game.
      RivaTuner is about as far as any paying customer should have to go to get their games stable (and the fact that we often need to even do that is kind of sad).
      I’ll take a stable game experience start to finish over 16:9 cut scenes with occasional visual garbage. But to each their own. Very few minds are changed in a TH-cam comments section, especially if the video didn’t already.

  • @thesch2867
    @thesch2867 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The pc port doesn't seem to have issues on some pcs tho, maybe the port just has problems on some specific setups either way that's a problem.
    Honestly i don't think it's fair to go so hard on d3t if anything SEGA are the ones to blame, they gave d3t barely any resources and a small budget on top of that they tried to make d3t make a Remake first and then cancelled the idea since they noticed that actually would need a proper budget:th-cam.com/video/7O7x0Urgvz4/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=DigitalFoundry
    so now with less money and a even more tight deadline they had to make this port happen somehow.
    d3t had to make a lot of technical tricks to make this port happen since Shenmue I and II are completely Dreamcast games
    , modern GPUs don't have the same features that the Dreamcast's GPU have most of which Shenmue I & II use.
    for example d3t did a hacky way to do a similar kind of transparenc effects purely in software, instead of using hardware stuff for it like the Dreamcast which had a separate chip for Order Independent Transparency.
    the way d3t did trasnparency has some issues but let's keep in mind the low resources and terrible deadline they had.
    They definitely tried their best but the thing is SEGA didn't gave them the proper budget and time, and i'd say they didn't seem to be the best guys for this job but no one else would've accepted this project under SEGA's unreasonable conditions.
    anyways with that out the way it's worth mentioning the ports still have a good number of other issues like acrpss all platforms like:
    Hitboxes issues in Shenmue I's Combat: th-cam.com/video/96Ky-0X0vBQ/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=TheKenjitoMaster
    Maybe d3t made some mistakes there thanks to them translating the source code notes with Google Translator which they said they used during development.
    Music inaccuracies: th-cam.com/video/uLh8064XlQg/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=Tastymond
    d3t decided to emulate the Dreamcast's DSP Yahama chip for Shenmue's sample based music. the DC's DSP Chip has always been a pain to emulate for many emulator creators and d3t only had a few months to try emulate this.
    by the way they improved the music with the newest patches but it doesn't sound as good as the original.
    They could've tried to just record all the tracks from original hardware and put them in the game although considering how much music Shenmue has recording and looping all those tracks would've been a massive task for them, or maybe they wanted the port to be more authentic but either way SEGA had them under pressure.
    Sound compression:
    pc port vanilla: th-cam.com/video/eO7JZp4haVo/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=ShenmueAudioRestorationProject
    pc port audio restoration mod: th-cam.com/video/TwR9RWsyXHw/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=ShenmueAudioRestorationProject
    basically all the sound effects and voice clips are more compressed than the original, this is most notable with voices, there is a fan made fix for this but no fixes for sound effects have been made.
    This other issue is more of something being cut out of the game, the new menu system (which personally i find worse than the original in most ways) changed they way how move lists are displayed basically getting 100% rid of the old move lists screens, Shenmue II's move list screen had a music track but since the old move list screens were removed so was this song: th-cam.com/video/HtsuY69-afY/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=ShenmueFans
    anyways those are the most notable issues the port has, at the end of the day Shenmue I and II are complex games which made heavy use of the special hardware features the Dreamcast had to offer and getting them to run on modern hardware which lacks those special features is no easy feat, but SEGA doesn't care about that and they just wanted to save some money and a put poor team of devs under a lot of pressure.
    This reminds me a lot of when SEGA outsourced the Dreamcast port of Virtua Fighter 3tb to Genki and decided to make them port the game in about 6 months with barely any documentation of the Dremcast hardware.
    AM2 didn't make the port themselves because they were too busy working on Shenmue.
    History repeats itself doesn't it? i feels a little ironic how the modern ports of Shenmue had a similar fate to the Dreamcast port of Virtua Fighter 3tb.

      @gamingblowsofficial  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great comment, thank you for the additional info. Will be watching these videos shortly.
      Might be worth doing a followup with all of these many issues addressed under one big video umbrella. But there are still other fish to fry, so we’ll see.
      That said, there aren’t (as far as we can tell) ANY PCs that don’t have this issue. So until we see otherwise, this is a universal problem across all machines.

The G-Sync is irrelevant, however, since the PC port is rendered within a 30fps container of sorts. Played through the game just fine. I don't know if the framerate issue was happening or not, I didn't notice it at all. I won't say that it wasn't happening because I wasn't looking for it. I also played it on PS4. Slight framerate issues (yes, slight) do not render a game 'broken'. If we were dipping below 24 frames per second I would then say it's broken, but anything above that is pretty normal even if relatively inconsistent.

    • @gamingblowsofficial
      @gamingblowsofficial  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Someone on the Steam forums provided a solution, but it's not really worth the effort. You need to use a program called Cheat Engine: "Add the address 'Shenmue.exe+24C183' and click on 'disassemble this memory region,' right click on it, 'replace with code that does nothing,' and then add 'Shenmue.exe+EB04C8' and change the value to 1 (byte). That changes the game's cap to 60fps."
      After that you have to limit the framerate to 30fps yourself using your GPU control panel. Sort of an absurd ask, which is why the consoles are still the best option.

    I got Shenmue on PC following watching this video, a load of nonsense.
    I think you should be confirming your specs (including the hz your monitor runs at) in the video before you start slamming the port for frames.
    Honestly, its an older game, typically older games have glitches if you run the frames run above what was intended at the time, and this was never intended as a remaster rather as a re-release.

      Either way id see it as at least on par with console re-releases (PS4/ xbox).
      I think losing a few frames every now and then barely makes the game "unplayable" or a "shameful" port.

      What a stupid comment. Did you even watch the video? The guy is talking about 30 fps in the remaster. That's considered low today and you're talking about high expectations like he was expecting support for unlimited fps or god forbid 60. Not only that but he mentioned trying different specs and checking others streams too. He even locked the fps to below 30 and it still didn't work. And did you forget the fact the devs who ported it had to be fought to make it playable at all? To be charitable with respect to your intelligence, i have to assume you forgot or didn't watch at all. So your comment is completely detached for the reality of the video. If you think your pc runs it well you're free to upload footage of it. P. S. Your rationalization about it being old thus not supporting 30 fps is contradicted by consoles running it at 30 fps. Either you watched a fraction of the video and then wrote a couple paragraphs based on your false conclusions you jumped to or you're on unbelievable amounts of copium.
