Plus, the poc characters tell off the white main character to help her learn from her mistakes and such. The main character wasn’t as really that bad near the end of the movie

The way Lucy deserves her own sequel
I think the main character was meant to represent girls with internalized misogyny and girls who get so used to guys having all the power that they don’t even realize that they’re giving them more by being silent. There are a lot of girls who are/were complacent until they found their voice.

in all the different povs there's nothing really about them in writing that shows how different they are.
Yes, RJ says "this is the pov of x character in the chapter" But she doesn't write the speech or anything differently , and the characters are all the same , flat, unconvincing characters. Sure, the multiple povs are there , but they don't really do much for the story and read like the any character's chapter

There's a video of me running around my parlour getting so excited whenever Seth came onscreen on someone's phone, so that's something lmao. Also yeah they definitely should have made the movie about Lucy/Claudia tbh, I only realised after checking reviews online what the issue was. Sometimes I have to rewire my brain a little to watch American movies and remember to take some other factors into consideration. Since I live in an a majority black country I tend to not realize or quickly forget the inequalities between Lucy, Vivian and Claudia. Lucy really had a lot more to say and obviously a lot more firsthand experience on the issues Vivian put in her flyer thing.

The blonde girl (I got her name totally wrong (i think-) the first time, I apologize 😔), is the epitome of straight, cis, white privilege. She’s so bland for literally no reason, creators why? This could’ve easily been an awesome story from Lucy’s Pov, but nOoOoO. I know it’s based from a book, but it just… irks me that she’s literally the “woke girl” (tm) who realized in 25 nanoseconds (like she realized all at once, wayyyy to late in her life to make me feel like she doesn’t have a white savior complex) that the world isn’t perfect. She also has no energy whatsoever. She just seems (as I said before) bland. Considering the mc’s perspective and from what I remember, I think this movie was pretty decent.
There’s a lot of tropes, but the overall themes and issues are somewhat relatable to me and very real. I think the readers did pretty alright to addressed on contrary to what we normally see in the Hollywood industry to be honest.
Overall, I think this movie had a good idea and really, it was just the whiteness in Hollywood bleeding out again.

In the beginning I exited out to make sure I clicked the right movie . Anyways the movie shouldn't have started in that area bc who's gonna protest in the forest😑. They should've started it with her with a whole bunch of ppl (mostly women and young girls) protesting in her city then disappearing and her being the only one left and when she tries to talk she can't 😌

honestly, the first time i watched the movie i didn’t think much of it. I really appreciate your very articulate and excellent points and they did give me a completely new outlook on the movie! that being said, i think the reason they chose to cast the white girl as the main character (aside from racism) is BECAUSE she was sexist, BECAUSE of her internalized misogyny, not in spite of it. I think the goal was to demonstrate the journey of discovering the faults in society’s treatment of women and how sometimes you go too far and how you need to find that middle ground. Do i think that this point of view was necessary? no. they should’ve made the movie about Lucy, because god knows there aren’t nearly enough movies showing black women and girls and their struggles with the combined racism and sexism. They had a good idea, but it just wasn’t needed and shouldn’t have been made at this point in time when there are so many other ways they could’ve done this movie. I hope i made sense here and didn’t just sound like a total idiot lmao

All the criticism of the main white girl is totally valid but I think the point is that she’s in the wrong 90% of the movie, and eventually she realizes it. It’s fighting internalized misogyny and sexism and challenging closeted viewpoints. All that said, I’d LOVE for there to be a second book from Lucy’s POV. Kids are supposed to be annoying. She’s an 11th grader and that is one of the most annoying ages. It’s about the development, if it was only on Lucy then there wouldn’t be much development because she was ALREADY strong and educated and she knew what she wanted

I read the book wayyy before this a movie came out and it really undermined the message and just everything was portrayed poorly it is just a big fat disappointment and a total waste of time. I seriously wish I could get that time back. Like the character development was just not there. Huge no would never do again .
