  • The M.D. Program at the University of South Alabama Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine awards the Doctor of Medicine Degree, adhering to the message captured by the mission statement of the College of Medicine:
    “Our mission is to provide innovative research, education, and clinical care in a culture of excellence, discovery, and scholarship to the next generation of physicians, scientists, and educators to advance patient-centered and equitable healthcare.”
    Our Class of 2028, hold degrees in 27 different fields of study from 20 different colleges. They represent 37 hometowns in 18 Alabama counties and 2 other states. The class is made up of 36 males and 43 females, 18% of whom are from rural counties within Alabama.
    The educational design of the M.D. program is a competency-based curriculum across all four years, with the first two years of medical school comprising an integrated organ systems-based approach. The first two years are largely taught on the main campus of the University in the Medical Sciences Building, the adjacent Small Group Learning Center, and the Health Simulation Building.
    The last two years of medical school are held in the University of South Alabama Hospitals and Care Centers, as well as in offices of community physicians, and expand the students’ education in the surrounds of full-time patient care.
