  • I have spent many nights camping, and this is my recent project that has greatly improved my camping experience! I based this build off my 2006 Honda Pilot EX-L. This project took me about a month on and off, but it was well worth the effort. Although I don't mention it, this is my 2nd version of my SUV camper. I built one before but was unhappy with the functionality and appearance, so I designed and made this one! If anyone wants to see the first one, I would be happy to upload some photos somewhere. Also, I'd be eager to make another video going into more detail on any aspects of the build if needed.
Also, shout out to my friend Reed for helping me film. I appreciate it, brother.

I love the setup. I must also say, of all the videos I have seen, you are the only one that I've seen actually clean up after you cook. I am quite sure the others do as well, but I've never seen it on camera. That move encouraged me to hit the subscribe button! Kudos to you.

Damn bro, obviously everyone is talking about the excellent setup but I'm genuinely impressed by your cooking skills. You clearly know how to cook and I'm not used to overland videos showcasing REAL cooking skills lmao. You salted your water, have quality pasta. Great cooking knife, with proper holding technique. Squanched and minced that garlic no problem, crazy with the white wine deglaze and adding the starch water back into the sauce at the end. You are living the life, congrats brother!

Damn dude! The back of the camper set up is pert near genius! Okay, the bed moves your build into genius. What is really impressive is that you haven't removed the seats, but have incorporated them into your build. You have the good stuff, i.e., CO detector, smoke detector and fire extinguisher. I totally respect your good sense! In truth, I am in awe of what you have accomplished and your travels. Wish I'd had a quarter of your gumption when I was your age. And dinner looks pretty darned good too.
I have assembled a travel kitchen for my family for when we take trips together, the kitchens are never supplied to our needs, and I have a full set of knives with blade covers, I am tickled to see you have a blade cover for your knives too. It is fun to have all of ones necessities to hand.
I also have my emergency supplies that I keep to hand. The last power outage proved to me that I will not survive the zombie apocalypse. I'm too old for that crap. However, I do recommend either a cat or two or a dog for a companion. Yeah, they take up space, but they are lovely companions on cold nights. And people will figure that you are talking to your pets and aren't crazy.😉😆
I cannot express enough how truly impressed I am with your clever, inventive build. I think you aced this one!

Thank you Sawyer, this is a very neat set up. Would you please do another version of the video where you zoom into the different parts of the build, like the hinges, etc, so we can see in details. Also the measurements of your build from beginning, cutting the boards, how put them together, basically, your wood working. It is for people like me who never took woodworking or use the circular saw before, for rookies!!!😀 thanks

      @sawyercamping  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Thanks for your comment. I would like to do a more detailed video at some point. If your interested in woodworking, you just have to start at some point. Even if you dont have access to tools, many cities have community centers that offer classes. Or you could start messing around with a basic hand saw (in a safe way).

I appreciate how organized you were in your presentation. Awesome flip down door surfaces. Weighing the water to determine how much. Excellent. How have you secured items such as the 12v fridge and the bed surface so they don't go flying if you are in an accident?

The 12v fridge is secured by a tension strap to the wood platform supporting it. The bed is connected to the main box by a piano hinge and secured down by a Velcro strap to keep it from flipping up

Love the build!! I have a 2006 Honda Pilot in this exact same color as well and I love it! If I could, I would definitely consider copying your build! Unfortunately, I don't have the AWD version so it isn't very reliable outdoors and in inclement weather. I especially don't trust it in the snow. Great job on building such a unique camping setup!!

    Newly Updated Safety Suggestions;
I just happened to see your channel, and others similar channels recently, and I think that you, and others sharing their actual reality, and some have expressed some of the up, and down sides to van, RV, or vehicle living.
I believe that it is very helpful, and beneficial to others who may be thinking about this type of living without actually thinking through, about the some of the realistic problems that could occur with vehicle or van living etc...
People need to know what up sides there are, as well as some of the down sides of vehicle living.
I believe this channel, and other channels have been informative to others, including myself.
Although, I am NOT living in a vehicle or anything like this.
I feel that you , and others TH-camrs sharing this with your viewers will be very helpful.
I wish you ALL the Best with your traveling endeavors.
I shared this with another traveler as I watched their TH-cam channel for the first time, as yours, and I shared with them this information that may be helpful to you as well to others.
Therefore, I would also like to suggest a few Safety tips, and items that may help you, or others in your viewing audience.
Although, you may have knowledge of this already,
I am not sure, so I hope this will be helpful to you, others or someone.
*Keep a Extra working cellphone with you or in your vehicle.
You can purchase inexpensive phone with a very low monthly price between 25, 35, 45, dollars a month with unlimited data and text, and some have Nationwide coverage
Do your research for the best fit for you
Carry Several Extra portable phone chargers, and cables.
    Consider theses items:
    *Mini portable power charging station.
I have also seen outdoor portable solar powered power stations, that can be recharged from sunlight this may be very useful to have, to power your devices.
*Invest in a Cellular signal booster for outdoor use, and camping situations to boost or amplify your cell signal and reception.
Research to see what you prefer.
    *Very Inportant:
Invest in a SOS distress electronic signal device, this a kind of device can send out a distress signal with your exact location.
There are various types of these devices, and including signal that can be used when boating or camping situations.
There is also the Satellite communication devices, that can provide SOS emergency signal and GPS, and provide satellite text messaging capabilities anywhere.
*Some have emergency Strobe lights SOS signaling with location alerts, and location updates that can be sent to your family, and emergency first responders.
Some can be synchronized with your smart watch or phone.
You can check online, and on Amazon, research what SOS emergency GPS devices will be a good fit for you.
*Mini portable vehicle battery jumper charger
    *vehicle battery jumper cables
    *Vehicle Jumper cables
    *Keep a Fire extinguisher handy
Smoke, and Carbon monoxide detectors can be helpful...
*Mounted Dashboard camera front and rear possibly.
    Exterior vehicle cameras
    Interior vehicle cameras
    *Flashlights or pluggin spotlights
    *Portable spotlights, and lanterns
Keep a few whistles around with you, and in your vehicle possibly in your vehicle’s center console
*A set of long range 2 way radios, walkie talkies, to communicate with others during trips, some have 100 mile radius keep for emergencies.
Use your own discretion regarding the use of any weapons.
    Don’t forget to bring
    Bear Spray
    Pepper spray
    Where is allowed
If you own a drone you can use it to survey your area for animals etc.
However, Please Be Safe and Beware of your Surroundings.
Stay Alert, and Be Safe even when stopping at Rest stops, Truck Stops, and conducting your various tasks.
Keep in often contact with your family, friends etc.
Although, I just noticed your TH-cam channel, and other similar channels.
You seem Very Aware of your surroundings and Alert, and you may be aware of many of these suggestions, however, I Don’t know, so I just posted this anyway to help anyone who may benefit from these suggestions.
Keep up with the latest Weather Updates, beware and prepare for unexpected Weather events and conditions.
    Keep your vehicle gas filled
Don’t chance your Safety by running your vehicle fuel or gas too close to Empty.
Fill it up anyway, it will save you alot of time, and headache later on.
Remember to keep up on routine maintenance, check your tires for wear, keep up with your fluids for your vehicle, like oil levels, washer fluid, brake fluid, antifreeze.
Remember Because you are on the road riding for sometimes very long distances, and long periods of time, I would suggest investing in 2 sets of tires, and a spare, the extra set to rotate.
Check the mileage ratings on your tires they all very.
Conduct visual inspections of your tires often, check for damage, wearing, air pressure, etc
Keep a pressure gauge to check your tires pressure and a tire pump.
Keep towing insurance to Be Safe if you ever need it.
It Doesn’t cost much try to get National coverage if available, or where you will be traveling.
Keep Extra financing, and savings for any unexpected issues, vehicle repairs, and overnight stays, in a emergency or if you need to rest indoors.
    Keep Enjoying Yourself,
Keep Enjoying the outdoors, and Nature
    Just..Please continue to
    Be Positive, Safe, and Alert..
Wishing Success, Well-being and Happiness You All.
    God Bless You, and everyone
Traveling, or living in their vehicles, Vans, RVs, etc.
    Please Be Safe...

I have that same year Honda. Aah yes, weight. How much does your unloaded system weigh? Since I tent camp, I don't often have any reason to sleep inside the vehicle. The one time I did, I did wish I had a solution to making that one seat fold flat. Your solution is quite elegantly simple. I would consider removing the third row seating entirely so I could carry enough water that I wouldn't need to check (aaah.. but weight). Also removing seats provides more storage areas. I typically place my folding ebike in the location where the second row passenger side seat used to be. Thanks for the vid.

I think I'm going to have to look into that suspension airbag--my 2010 Pilot bounces way too much. Very helpful ideas you've given me 👍

Heyyy what's up bro bros... Frekkin Amazing build, manz . . . I'm in the process of buying an older Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer Edition... it's got the V8 and 4WD which prolly I'd broken like 80% of the REST of the truck, bro LoLoLoL BuT anyyways man, I'm Hoping that it'll be Road Worthy & what-not... I was wondering if Maybe if you're down, we can maybe Caravan sometime and hit up some sweet spots like campgrounds with some really nice mountains and views etc... EXTRA Binis Points iFFF there's fishing available there . . . For BOTH our Safety etc, it'd Def have to be a Public Place, considering we don't know each other, one bit... So just for comfort, it prefer that, if you're Ever down to chill, bro... Best Wishes and Lotsa Positive Vibes and Energy sent ya way, man... SaFe travels also and iF ya can, keep posting content and keep living the Dream... Stay GoLden. Peace Bro

I love this set-up. Where can I purchase plans for this? Could you take measurements (I haven't finished the video). I have a 2012 Honda Pilot with 144K miles on it. I moved from the PNW to Florida and I need my mountain therapy. This would be the ideal removable solution! Thank you for posting this!

Hi, l like your rather "formal" presentation. I have built a similar set-up for my SUV. But my main design criteria is that l shud be be able to access all the important things from outside and from within the car. That includes the cooking facilities, the pantry as well as the water. That allows for stealth camping or for when the weather is bad.

Could you explain what you did with the windows/curtain system? I know some people install screens for the windows, do you do that? How do you prevent it from getting stuffy in there while sleeping?

I never understand the extra seat in the back. If u want to sit down you’ll alwys jave your driver seat or front passenger seat. Every seat more in the car is in my opinion overkill and wasted space

Great and very well thought out build. You did a great job explaining the details. The meal of course looked delicious. My only suggestion would be get real white wine instead of the cooking wine from the grocery isle. Too many nitrates.(then again I'm an old timer) Good luck on your future travels.

I would have eaten the meal right out of the pan to not have to wash one more item. Good job overall--but you need to rinse the soap off dish better so not to ingest the dried detergent when you use the plate next time. Good luck!
