  • A viewer asked us why we used both oats and barley the last time we made porridge and we didn't have an answer! So we decided some indoor kitchen experiments were in order while the weather was too cold to cook outside. Would we like one over the other or are they better together? Let's find out!
    Barley was a staple food during the Viking age while oats saw a decline in use during this era.

    So when I researched breads in Viking era, I found that most of the time the oats were used for their animals and barley was the main staple grain found in not only Birka but all over. Most of the cooking I found around the Viking age as done either over long pans over the fires or in bots and cauldrons. So with the absorption of water would be more geared towards your barley. If that helps with why they did a bit more with barley vs oats. - Ragna
