- The new Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries DLC "The Dragon's Gambit" has arrived. Let's take a look at all the gameplay aspects, story, new Mechs and weapon systems together. In this playthrough we will start a new career as a Mechwarrior thrown int o a conflict against our will.
In the aftermath of the Fourth Succession War, the Davion/Steiner Alliance dealt a devastating blow to the Capellan Confederation, leaving First Prince Hanse Davion eager to replicate this success against the Draconis Combine.
Gunji-no-Kanrei Theodore Kurita, fully aware of the encroaching menace posed by the FedCom Alliance, has taken decisive action to fortify the Combine's defenses against an inevitable war. As tensions rise, a unique opportunity presents itself - to unite with the Draconis Combine and rally behind Kurita's audacious and unexpected plan.
Embark on an epic quest line as your mercenary company joins forces with the 5th Amphigean Light Assault Group. Together, you must defend the Draconis Combine against a massive invasion by the FedCom Alliance. Brace yourself for the largest handcrafted campaign yet, spanning 15 thrilling missions, and prove your mettle in the face of this formidable threat as you strive to safeguard the future of the Draconis Combine.
The gameplay of Mechwarrior 5 is split in two different parts. On the one hand you will have to manage your resources, hire new crew members, outfit your Mechs and travel through the Inner Sphere star map. But the action starts as soon as you get into the cockpit of your Battlemech yourself to fulfill contracts on the battlefield to earn more C-Bills and progress the story. I will review the weapon systems, battlemechs, show you how to build the loadouts and train your pilots and take a look at all the different mission types and upgrades of the MW5 Heroes of the Inner Sphere DLC.

Got to admit, the fact this DLC actually starts with the consequences of the main revenge story is a pleasant surprise. Especially since there's truly no way they would've let it slide.
Yeah, it's a great tie in to the campaign, too bad precentor moir's logic is as flawed as the coordinator's many edicts, since with all the killings precentor yamada's mercs did to get the Star League storage facilities, if word got out comstar would lose all of it's reapution and be labeld as murderors*, it might take a while since using hpgs is out of the question...

@@DIEGhostfish no ones, what I meant was that knowledge of what comstar's precentor did in the campaign would have to go on a word of mouth basis through jumpship travel.
12:40 little nugget of info, Yamata was the Comstar puppet master in the Annihilator from the main campaign that was pulling Black Inferno's strings.

The difference in armor between stock and max armor jaegermech is just comical
It more than doubles, if my math is right.
@Linkous12 it does. In tabletop a Jager has like 6.5 tons of armor, but the max is like 13 or 13.5 tons for a 65 ton mech.

If i remember correctly... Precentor Yamata was the Precentor you killed during the last Mission in the Commander Mason Campaign to get the Nightstar. Black Inferno worked together with Comstar.
Correct. To be fair, the main storyline was pretty much years ago so it's understood that killing Yamata was a bit of a distant memory unless you're a new player who wanted to play the story before focusing career mode.
@@DevilPogoStick agreed. And sadly it isnt mentioned in this new Storyline that Precentor Yamata was killed in the Black Inferno incident.
@@Vision1100 admittedly, the default starting mechs of Dragon's Gambit do leave the impression Mason's revenge story did happen in that part unlike the others which really gloss over it unless the crew did their revenge far sooner than what most players took. Most of those mechs were the rewards during the fights against Black Inferno including Kane's King Crab and Nikolai's Victor, nevermind the Nightstar you got after killing Yamata.
Early game is always my favorite part of your playthroughs. Let's goooo!

I was getting ready to start the Dragon's Gambit myself, So glad to see you hitting us with a video/playthrough as I'm waiting for the download.
Yamata was the Comstar guy you had to kill in the HPG mission of the Kestrel Lancers DLC.
Haven't had a chance to play the new DLC yet, but from the First 5 min of your video & the fact it is the war of 3039 it sounds like this is some solid new content with the best story/campaign yet. While the Draconis Combine are some evil bastards which says a lot for this grimdark universe I am really anxious to play this though it makes me even more excited for MW5 Clans!

Game devs really need to summon the spirit of 90's games and if you don't have the money for voice actors just pull in whoever is willing to do it. These walls of text are brutal. Like I'm happy to read but not while I'm trying to co-op with the homies.
Noketsuna Michi ( DC Warlord ) is a character form the " Wolves on the border " book. Another reference to this book is the Katana Kat Panther hero mech wich is Tetsuhara's when he was Noketsuna's commander
Funny thing is if you are playing an older career mode,this dlc instantly tanks your comstar rep as you 'passed up' the offer. I mean I am kinda a FedCom loyalist as they pay me the most...and dracs are easy targets so I would take a lot for me to work with a drac. And I am rather stubborn,going to go down mauling anyone that brings me low. If you are going down,go down a legend.
Hard to become a legend when you can't be mentioned on the phone.

Focks is gonna have his hands full in the very, very near in game future! His presence in this MW5 DLC isn't random now that we know the Clans are coming officially by way of the final MW5 DLC! I can't wait!
Playing myself whilst watching. Have to say im enjoying the more structured feel of this campaign so far.
I just want to put one thing in perspective lore-wise.
The reason (one of) why Davion decided to aim his conquest at Kurita is that, otherwise, the only other viable area would be Taurian Concordate.
And Taurians do not F around when it comes to war. As a state they predate the Star League itself and are the only inner-sphere state that did not sign the Ares Conventions. Meaning they do not adhere to rules-of-war as we know it in MW series. They dont play in "small scale" operations. If they are attacked, they go full annihilation mode.
Therefore, they suffered almost compleat extinction by the SLDF.
Going back to 3025 tech after playing with the YAML mods and clan tech takes some getting used to, but is very refreshing and really gives you an idea of just how bad the succession wars were to tech levels in the IS. The limitations are real! 😂
Even more so, the crazy pirate mods and mechs from that Clan Invasion pack he was running.
YAML also includes all the Dark Age equipment, doesn't it? It's basically LosTech era versus ilClan.
YAML does time gate stuff which is why I'd never NOT have it.

I went over and over in my head if I should watch this before playing and I love your channel so much and your videos so much and missed out being update recently I HAD to watch this before playing. I am currently building my lance and revenue before tackling this dlc.

This may have already been asked but what mods have you put into this new DLC? Kind of excited about this so let's make it a good series! You haven't failed me yet. I have to live vicariously through your gameplay because I can't afford a computer that'll run this game.
He's playing stock vanilla right now to show off the DLC as it was intended to be played. Also factoring into that decision is the fact that every time a patch/DLC comes out it breaks all the mods and you have to wait for them to be updated 😆
you would be surprised by the minimum requirements needed to play i just upgraded last month and i was around the minimum before and it played fine even with the lower settings it still looks good
And that's why I wait for about 3 or 4 days until the mods are fixed. Vanilla is soooooo boring

The night star caught my attention more than the longbow. PGI needs to update the vanilla mech lab. Especially on consoles. Can't do a grinder without proper equipment.
8:12 having the singles in the toros increases the chance that the PPC survives slightly longer.
Playing this game without 20 or so mods is pretty hard. The AI blocking shots can be fixed with formation mod which I can't play this game without!
Any mech I personally pilot always has LRMs Medium Lasers and Flamers(for the small energy slots).
I always like running the Swaybacks that have missile racks on their shoulders with LRM 10s(1x LT/RT) three Flamers (1 H, 1 LA, 1 RA) and two Medium Lasers(1 LA/RA).
I found it is easier to over heat enemy heavy and Assault mechs and has allowed me to get several head shots.
I of course max out it's armor, and the missile and energy weapons are on chain fire for their groups while the flamers can be used non-stop with very little heat
My Archer runs twin LRM 15s (1 LT/RT) a pair of Medium pulse Lasers(CT), twin Flamers(1 LA/RA), max armor, believe it or not I have never lost my Archer once.
BattleMaster the multi Missile Rack mech.
Max Armor, DHS, 3x LRM 5, 1x LRM 15, 2x Medium pulse Lasers, 2x . medium Lasers
To be honest I am heavily disappointed with the long bow.
It's the terrible slot system that really holds it back.
I would rather load up all the missiles in the Arms using LRM 5s as they are more effective over all and you can get a true rain of hell effect from that.
But alas that's the massively terrible hindrance of the slot section.
So I am staying away from the longbow as it doesn't live up to it's name.
Other than that I find that this is a fun dlc.
Though I have a massive handy cap. The snakes really, really hate me (max negative, lol), but then again I really, really dislike them, lol.

Yep, before the event that made him infamous. And arguably right now the only reason why Comstar isn't sending people to have Mason and crew become persona non grata in the IS.

situational reality was also in the game during cresent hawks revenge. i remember if your missle or laser missed the target but hit a nearby gas pod or whatever they were the whole area went up and the mechs usually died. airstikes too during the luthien raids v clans

Death to Mercenaries edict: Had no impact in MW5 previously. The Coordinator had gotten angry at the Wolf’s Dragoons for fighting back instead of allowing themselves to be absorbed, and decided they didn’t like ANY Mercenaries. The result was a ban on hiring merc’s until after the Clan invasion.
I did like that it was actually acknowledged and had the big implication that a lot of people in the Combine itself actually didn't like the edict as...Well, the Combine itself could barely defend themselves at this point without mercenaries. They saw it as for what it is, the Coordinator having a hissy fit as his immense hate boner towards the Dragoons during the 4th Succession War had demonstrated. But it is an edict they have to obey, yet there's subtlety in play as long as Takashi Kurita doesn't notice.
It's nice to see when not everyone is like minded as the main leadership of their respective factions. Because this edict in the canon did have a lot of people wondering how this dlc campaign could even work outside of accusations of ignoring it (admittedly it was kind of this prior to this).
@@DevilPogoStickIt didn't help much when Jaime Wolf pretty much told Takashi to screw off during Hanse and Mellisa's wedding. (The Kell Hounds also had a part in the Edict, due to their actions in the 4th war).
@DevilPogoStick To be fair, the guy expressing that displeasure, Michi Noketsuna, is unusually disposed towards giving mercs a chance. When he was a young junior officer, he was the assistant of Minobu Tetsuhara, a truly laudable samurai Mechwarrior who gained a great deal of prestige during his time working as liaison to the Wolf's Dragoons when they served the Combine. Because of various political machinations, the Dragoons were driven to escape the Combine, and Minobu (with Michi in tow) was forced to lead the expedition to massacre his friends. In the ensuing battle on Misery, both sides suffered immensely, but Minobu was defeated, and despites Jaime Wolf's pleas, committed seppuku to atone for his failure, knowing full well that he had been purposely put into an impossible situation by uncaring superiors. That experience shattered Michi's faith in Takashi Kurita, the Coordinator of the Combine, and he went on to seek revenge against Takashi while retaining reasonably friendly relations with the Dragoons. Later on, after the Clan Invasion, he'd even join the Dragoons and take part in their Civil War.
So, in conclusion, I wouldn't take Michi Noketsuna's opinion of mercs as being all that common. He's a rare breed in the Combine, and that's putting it lightly.

You'd have to be specific on which incident, since the Dracs have done it multiple times throughout their history from the formation of the Galedon Alliance onwards.

I run my Jaegermech basically the same, but with a AC 10 on one arm. The extra punch makes a difference I find.
Glad they realized that virtually no players would willingly side with the Combine without being coerced by ComStar. Personally, I'm curious if there actually are consequences to ignoring Mori, like bounty hunters coming after you.
Just curious, how many people play in 3rd person? I like the broader field of vision and seeing my mechs lumbering around.
Nah, not for Mechwarrior. I prefer feeling like I'm inside the big, stompy mech. Plus, animation-wise, there's not much to see in 3rd person anyway.

As others have said, 3 of the mechs are rewards from the last DLC. King Crab, Victor, and Nightstar. Very cool they did that to keep continuity.

there is two UAC plus Ammo in the shop before you start the mission.

Yikes, starting from scratch and without YAML. Those Mechs look naked. I'm probably going to be testing out some of the mods rather than go pure vanilla
No joke. I started playing a short while ago, and seeing how barren the loadout screen was actually made me sad for a second. Ah, well- it'll be fine. I'm sure the YAML guys are busy getting the mods compatible again, and I'll be back to strapping quad light rifles on a Hunchback again in a few days or so.

A marauder with LRM, med lasers & an AC10 is such a blasphemous loadout, but I can see it working rather well.
Doesn't PC have the option to have weapon groups chain fire it's great to keep the heat down and always have something to fire.
i like the new start in vanilla mods would make these scripted campaigns to easy

Large game updates like this DLC break mod comparability with the game until the mod creators can update the mods to compensate.
