The Ouachita National Scenic Trail runs from Talimena State Park in Oklahoma to Pinnacle Mountain outside of Little Rock, Arkansas. Rainman and I set out to cover the first 60 miles of the trail headed East.

Great video. Thanx for posting. What month did you take this trail and what time of year would you suggest hiking this trail and why
This was in January, the weekend before it was published. I think that is about the perfect time to be on the trail, with the exception of the creek/river crossings, this temperature is perfect for hiking. And the leaves being off the trees gives you some views you'd miss in the spring through fall. Thanks!
Where can i get good trail maps of this system ? Also, are these trails easy to follow and do they have signage directing trekkers along the way

OMG...if I remember correctly that tarp and grill were there when we were on this section in 2016. Crazy!!!
Haha, that's funny! Yeah, it looked like it had been there for a while, someone was awfully ambitious bringing that along, but the ambition wore off before the return trip! While it's not cool, it does help us share funny stories!
With my job I can't afford to take off for the big long through hikes, but the Ouachita Trail as a through hike is my big hiking goal!
It's a great trail, and not a super easy one, it will challenge all who take it on!

What packs you guys toting?
I believe we were both carrying ULA Ohm 2.0's, but Rainman may have been carrying his Circuit. Thanks!

They'll do just about any color combo you can think of if you want to pay for the custom fee!

Good to see you out on the OT, Spiguyver. Between the Ouachita’s & the Ozarks - Arkansas is a pretty special place. I’ve completed 128.5 miles of the OT thus far, with miles 0 - 94.5 left to do. Looks like I’ve saved the best for last. 🤙🏼

Have never hiked the trail, but many years have taken the motorcycle or jeep in March. Love this area. About 4 hours from home.

Water is always hit and miss out there.
Did you see any bears?
Unfortunately no bears. Yeah, we just weren't sure about water so we cached 3 gallons along the way. We used our water, but it really wasn't necessary.

That looked like an awesome trip with perfect weather! How did you like the all-n-one hammock/tarp suspension out in the field? Pros/cons? I'm playing around with the same idea. But unfortunately, with the cold snap we're having (Chicago area), I can't really test it outside yet. Do you feel like the wind had a greater effect on your hammock, than if your tarp was on a separate suspension?
I am still really liking the all in one setup. It's been working great. I don't know if the wind had any real effect due to the tarp being attached, maybe a little bit. It didn't keep me from sleeping! Thanks!
@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 That's good to hear. I made mine with the ability to lengthen the tarp suspension, so it can be raised/lowered for the conditions. But part of me likes the simplicity of just having one height for the tarp, and not having to adjust anything. But as I said, I have to be able to get outside and actually drive a stake into the ground to really test it out. With tomorrow's forecast of -15°/-25°, that ain't gon' happen for a little while!
I get that, stay inside where it's warm!
@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 It finally warmed up enough this weekend to test out the all-in-one system. First impressions, I really like it. I know that I'll lose some height adjustability with this setup; but it seems the tarp height is just about ideal. If I want it lower, I can just let the tarp ridge hang looser before guying out the sides. Also, I did not have any shock cord on my guylines, but there was really no discernible "sag" or loss of tension when I loaded the hammock.
This system definitely makes setup/tear down much quicker/simpler. And it's nice not having to duck under the tarp suspension whenever I need to walk around.

I’d be interested in seeing a video on how you have your tarp attached to your suspension. That’s how I like it too but if you try to research it, you array thinking your wrong for it haha

I absolutely love the OT. I maintain mm39-mm45 ish, The kiamichi bottom, Check out friends of the ouachita trail. Lots of knowledge there.
You ever have room for another guy I'd like the chance to do a big section of the ot with you. I'm currently up to the state line myself so far.
I'll come out and clean that river section. I've personally never ran into so much trash and I was down there Christmas weekend 21-24.

I did not know about the ULA packs. At the moment I'm in the market for a new pack! I've kind of narrowed it down to Z-packs Arc Haul Zip, but I open up my list again, now that I know about ULA packs. I am interested in the circuit, because of durability and it seems that people find them comfortable. In the beginning I was keen on the HMG packs, but I was worried about comfort level. From the reviews the ULA packs seems to be a better choice if added confort is important. I am comming from a osprey 88 xenith, so there is great weight savings to get :)
I'm having a new pack built right now. Should have it in the next couple weeks!
@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 hope you make a review :) The pack is so important and one of the items that I feel is the hardest to get right. I am actually considering a Osprey Exos aswell. Will wait until I get closer to summer, before I upgrade my pack

Thanks for sharing this. Did you find the trail was relatively well marked enough to follow easily? I've read and seen a couple trip reports of folks saying it was easy to mistakenly end up on side trails around there.
I was on the OHT a couple weeks before you last summer. Ended up cutting that trip short because of all the rain. The bugs weren't too terrible for me, but the rain probably made them worse by the time you got there. Beautiful area I definitely want to spend some more time in.
We found the trail extremely well marked and with the exception of a small portion, very well maintained. We will be back to do more of both the OHT and OT for sure!

Where did you park you first night
We met up at the Black Fork Mountain trailhead, drove to the state line and camped at the State Line shelter, then the next morning drove over to Talimena State Park.
Great vid! Looks like a great trail! Would you recommend this trail for a June hike? I grew up in MO and understand the heat/humidity in the midwest. Thanks in advance!
As long as you're ready for the heat, bugs and ticks, and are okay with cacheing water, I think June would be great. Only downside is you wouldn't get nearly as many views as we were able to get with the leaves off.

Both.
With everything, including camera gear, I was probably around 21-22 lbs. I carried the Ohm 2.0, Dutch Chameleon with top cover and side sling, Hammock Gear Incubator and Burrow - 0 deg, 12' silpoly tarp with doors from CRO, and quite a bit of other stuff!

Exactly! We went back on the way out and picked up some water caches that were left empty by others, along with some trash at a couple of the shelters. Sucks we have to do that though!
Did you take 2 cars?
Yes, Rainman had his, I had mine, we met up, left one at one end and drove to the other. There are also shuttles available. Thanks!
@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 yeah I've never used the shuttle. I've only hiked out and back. Once with my kids we almost made Deadman gap on 2 day out and back

You talk about the temps and I just keep asking myself why I am forecast for possible -50 wind chill tomorrow. Lower Michigan should never be this cold. I have cabin fever.

I have done the Horsethief Springs Loop/Billy Creek Loop, I have a video on that one as well, but it wasn't a very well maintained trail. Might be nicer just to do an out and back along this trail, honestly!

@@lauriewilliams8750 Depending on the distance you want, you can make a nice loop of Winding Stair to Kiamichi or the State Line and back.

I hiked section 1 last weekend (mid-morning Friday-Sunday) and I'm pretty sure I we parked next to your truck at Talimena state park. We finished up at Winding Stair campsite. The trail from Deadman's Gap to Holson Valley shelter kicked my butt too (see my channel for the video) . And you are exactly right, this trail is great AT training. I'm hiking from Springer Mtn. to Fontana Dam in late May. I'll subscribe to keep up with your hiking trips. Good video.

@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 true story. unfortunately it's real life and should not be just edited out. same with the amount of traffic a area gets. I've been backpacking since way before it was popular as it is not and your vids are very true to the real thing.
