Flynn McFarland You want the Compression #s within 10 percent of eachother. You could check the head gasket to see if its all worn out. If thats the case getting a new one might even out your numbers. If its not the case it might still run but likely a bit rough especially on the idle. Best of luck
hi wabbo I have one identical to yours but I have a weak spark and sometimes none did those years come with cdi ignition I notice I had a cracked coil assembly under neath the fly wheel at least it looks like a coil tested the two coils outside the flywheel each showed good and the cdi box showed good also can you help me out do you happen to have some pics of the underneath the flywheel thanks in advance
Robert Theriot Yes the 79s have Cd Ignition. If your coils and Powerpack are good but not enough spark I would check the charge coil underneath the flywheel. If that's the cracked one your talking about then I would definitely replace it.
thanks for the video, just got the twin of this one. I have the 1979 Evinrude 6HP. Looks likes it gets along pretty good!
No problem and thanks man. Old Johnson/Evinrude are really great motors.
@@wabbomotors4687 much to my disappointment mine ended up being seized. I soaked it all night and got it free this morning. It's not running yet tho.
@@AlaskanFalcon Ahh well it's good you got it unstuck. I would compression test it to make sure your still in the ball park.
@@wabbomotors4687 I did. 100 on one and it looked like 80 on the other.

Given a 71 model. Had carb issues. Filthy inside. Now runs like a top. Always surprised at how well these motors run.
