truly a surreal experience to randomly stumble on this great well-spoken 9 month old video on my exact niche gaming interest and then see you scroll down exactly to my username on a scout at 3:56
@@cassius_scrungoman So have you try Xenonaut 2 game yet ? It seem like have quite a mount of what you looking for in Long war mod here (Of course it not great at the start but I heard they make some new update and balance that make it more enjoyable now ?)
Huh, it's really interesting to see the origins of Terra Invicta's growing Alien tech level & the rising threat as you act against them here in Long War, back where it all began.
The Aliens Aggression towards you makes a lot more sense to me know as the first time I faced an Ethereal on Long War 1 was on a bomb mission and I was like "Why would the Ethereal Hive mind sacrifice one of their own to ensure mission success?" and when you told me about the aggression caused by me over killing them each month, it made a lot more sense. They hated me so much for kicking their asses that they are willing to send fellow Ethereals to their deaths in suicide bombing missions just to make sure I don't succeed.
Beaglerush got me into strategy games in the first place. It wasn't a genre I really understood, but watching L&I and the highlight videos something clicked. In a roundabout way it led me down the path to actually being a GM for several ttrpg groups (shoutout to Lancer) where I could run whole squads of enemies to terrorize my players with
02:32 I took the bait of the Large ship on my first playthrough and while I got about 75% through it judging by other playthroughs of this mission, it made me lose almost my whole squad. I got my first terror mission back to back which I failed miserably and it was a long way of recovery until I felt comfortable taking UFOs on again. Also, glad I am not the only one who cringes at the default aerial combat balancing but I was too lazy to change it on my 2nd playthrough
It is so rare to find an actual XCOM EW Long war content creator these days. I'm glad I subscribed. Besides that, I love rocketeer/archer with my life. I use squad motion tracker mod, a lot of battle scanners, concealment scout, and edited ini value to increase rocket/grenade/mine range beyond visual range. I always start engagement by dropping bomb on alien pack for damage/red fog debuff.
I think what makes Long War 1 works wayyy better than Long War 2 is how the game was designed. Like, you're supposed to be this really big military waging an open war against the aliens. It really feels like you're fighting an actual "war" where both sides continue to adapt. You can think the same type of aliens having more HP as them getting better armor(that you can't see) or maybe they're fielding the "better" version as they see you as a bigger threat. Like you don't want to spent that million dollar missile just to take out a bunch of people with bows, but once they use gauss rifle, now it becomes a lot more appealing to use that more expensive munition.
Xcom LW is also my favorite game of all time. I bought it on launch at to be honest shelved it after beating the campaign. A couple of years later I came across EnterElysium's video on the Long War mod. I installed the mod later that night and pretty much has been the main game I have played 90% of the time for the last 8 years or so. I just binged 92 episodes of Beaglerush's latest 2022 modded campaign that looks like he dropped soon after gaining MECs. But I'll tell you just watching his and others VODs improve my play to this day. Even with over 1k hours on my own campaigns I still enjoy playing and consuming Long War content. You mentioned AssaultCom and that'll probably be the next style I'll give a shot. Noticed you doubt there will be a 3rd video but I'm still eager for more. After browsing your other content I'm also going to take a look at Starsector. Who knows maybe it'll take up the next 8 years.
Bro, your story with Beagle and Long war is mine. And i even found this video just as i was coming to a close another Long War compaing. This all just too relatable and true.
6:07 IS THAT THE GAME I THINK IT IS?????????????????????? Also yay a fellow Beaglerush fan... You wouldn't happen to know where I could find those decade old streams, would you?
Hey Cassius, just wanted to say that I’m loving the long war content, I’ve just happened to start playing it again myself and it’s awesome seeing some new content on it.
Glad I found your channel here.. excellent information! Wanted to finally start playing LW1 after playing all the Xcoms over the years from UFO Defense to WotC but all were unmodded. This looks damn fine though..
Bagel and Jam, while i dont really watch him anymore due to not really being able to commit time to watch a stream, finding him through chkilroy yeaaaaars ago and following his longwar games were as you said, just nice to watch and be a part of. he got me on to my current vice game Mechabellum, and its just kinda funny that after all this time ill think about beagle and check out whats happening, think about that time how you could just sink into these videos or games like ive never really been able to nowadays. Didnt really feel like i was wasting time or filling space, was just there. anyway thanks for the nostalgia hit man
This video is a blessing for i'm currently in my L/I run in XCom 2: WotC and have played with the idea of finally playing a Long War mod (which i never have until this day). Ever since X-Com (the OG) i'm drawing my campaigns out a bit but never in the way like Legendary difficulty or Long War does. Thank you, especially talking about the various Second Wave options!
Just came here to say how much watching this and the previous xcom LW video reminded me on why I loved it so much. Keno as fuck and probably the one game I would keep to play if I was locked in a nuclear shelter for the rest of my life. 1,474 hours in it for me personally and like you 100% don't regret a single hour of it. Subbed and liked dawg 👍
I think quite a few of the problems with LW1 is that the team was working around a game they were actively tearing apart by the seams with their efforts.
2:15 I KNEW IT! Playing long war 1 for the first time. Focused air war, like super heavy. Was shooting down decent amount of ufos. A scout landed cuz I had no available interceptors. Sent in the D team - all specialists and rookies plus a medic. Only to find 8 mutons, a mechtoid (first time find them) and like 8 sections, floaters, and thin men. I somehow managed to beat the mission, but man my memorial is increasing :/
Love the videos man. I do want to insist that you not being interested in Long War Rebalanced is more than likely a product of simply not being able to comprehend how all the changes in LWR congeals into one of the best Long War experiences I can think of. Just the removal of alpha striking alone makes battles so, so interesting. I've never seen a game more tuned towards anti-cheese, and it's absolute nirvana. And the aerial combat is quite a bit better. edit: fixes squadsight cheese aswell haha The permanent positive or negative traits soldiers can get after battle, each class being even more fleshed-out and purpose-built than in LW1, the ability to send salvage teams in on crashed UFOs incase you don't have time/desire to do a UFO mission. It doesn't get everything right, and it most certainly needs getting used to, but I reckon it'll be worth trying in earnest. Like I commented in your other video, I was legit a LW1 player only, and really poo-pood everything about LWR.
I think the only thing holding Long War back is the lack of random maps in XCOM 2012. There are some that are so seared into my consciousness as Places of Pain that I cannot stand ever seeing them again--Flooded Streets and the Bombed Highway come to mind instantly, but there would probably be more if I wasn't so good at repressing PTSD.
I fired up a game of Long War last month, and I was looking for vids just to see if anyone is still playing and I found yours. Thank you so much for making this, it feels great to know someone loves this mod enough to still make videos on it. However, I WILL NOT STAND for this anti-Rocketeer slander. Yes, some missions I don't need to fire a single rocket. But in others, a rocket down the middle is the only solution to a thorny tactical problem. And the second more than balances the first. Some people don't like the rocket's awful accuracy. To them I say, "you mean you don't plan your moves in advance so you have a steadied Rocketeer ready when the enemy comes into LOS?"
Glad i found this video. I sank 400 hrs into long war and love dragging things out. Towards the end you have insanely op squads (or 2 to 3) of psionics and snipers and its so satisfying mopping the alien forces.
It's funny what a coincidence that I also happened to get into Long War because of Beaglerush's streams, spent an exorbitant amount of time playing Long War and was going through a rough time in my life where I used Long War as a comfort food. I seriously cannot thank Beagle and Long War enough to help me get through that rough spot in my own life those years ago. I kind of want to go back and play it and add onto my own personal 1800 hours of playtime.
Heya. Nice video, really interesting. I never play XCOM LW1 and just play with the Rebalence version, i enjoy it but maybe after a LWR campaign il going to try the classic LW, it seems really nice
Damn, you make me really wanna go back playing long war. I come back to it a lot. Cause it DOES feel like the game where i could not just spam safe and load, accept MOST mistakes and play it smoothly. My current playthrough though is a bit stuck on classic (second) difficulty, i chose random soldier perks for some freaking reason. And decided that "huh progressively expensive satelites is a good idea m8" (why, WHY???!) But angles and flanks feel like actual consistent way to reward/punish positioning, which isn't random. If i get flanked, well, my fault, should've saved up a slot. But the biggest problem for me is freaking air, despite having laz guns on my air support and usable consumables i just don't have enough air support. The air combar feels like literally the worst part of the game with little of control about it, when sometimes game just says "freak u and ur satelites in the arse, have fun having negative money!" also long war and repearing gear is a match made in hell, with the way i play where usually most of my squad is damaged or killed most of the missions. As for now, i have a love hate relationship with this game, and considering tweaking my current campain, if it's possible, or freaking starting from scratch couple of month or a year later. I might have lost a campain with 50-100 hours sinked in it, and it's hard to accept, that i had to make different tech choices maybe, better managed airplane stuff. Just when i hit psyonics, maaan. I'll try to salvage my current campain. Thank you for reminding why i absolutely love and despise that game at the same time.
Does anyone ever remember that one youtuber named Mal? He was amazing at Long War and really got me into XCOM. He passed away some time ago unfortunately.
I respect your opinion but do enjoy LW2 more myself. However, there's a lot of LW1 features I wish came back, particularly the weapon variety where something like Squadsight vs Snap Shot is an equipment decision rather than a character progression one. I think the key difference between the feel of LW1 and LW2 is the mission timers. I feel like XCOM 1 can be a pretty slow and cheesy game if you want it to be, something that is absolutely rectified by the turn-to-turn urgency of XCOM 2. Great vid! Also strongly recommend Long War of the Chosen if you haven't tried it already.
LWR just doesn't feel all that great. One of those things that doesn't really excite me. Good breakdown and mod list btw, we have a lot in common but I don't mind leaving EXALT on! As far as squad setups: I remember one drop on my first playthrough of LW. Landed medium, I KNEW it was a trap, A team was fatigued. Do I leave it? Fuck no I've got four corporal rocketeers and an ITZ MEC. I hit the LZ and _FORTY_ EXALT immediately activate. They immediately activate and experience the god damn 4th of july. EVERYONE lived, almost everyone got wounded but dense smoke in hard cover is fucking good. ALL HAIL SMONK!
New to long war, 2 months in. got a C on the first month and a B- on the 2nd month. Any big tips for me? I'm super early on, I feel like I don't know what I am doing for the direction of the base building/campaign, I am trying to aim for MEC's as I recall them being great in EW. Oh also, I started with Long War Rebalance, I heard it was great.
LW Rebalance is a vast improvement though. The global pod activation from nearby alerted aliens fixes the dominant 'one group at a time' meta which is the reason why LW is such a time sink. LWR allows you to do a lot more tactics like breaking line of sight to gain overwatch immunity during the following turn. It has the best ufo breach & clear experience.
i have played about half of a campaign with these rules and maxed alien spawns, and didn't end up liking them more than standard gameplay. because you can reveal the entire map on drop, maps have to work if that happens, and most maps don't have enough cover on drop for that kind of thing to feasibly work all the time.
if we're sharing our builds, I always rush Genemods and make them Assaults, Alien hybrid Soldier's bumrushing the Aliens with their trench brooms gives me life. Valen is a horrible person but that psycho german chick has my heart and you KNOW I mean that literally.
Aiming Angles + Absolutely Critical + Damage Roulette + Red Fog + Commanders Choice + Strict Screening. NEVER. OFF. Nearly 2k hours in Long War one, less then 40 in Long War 2 because they removed second wave options.
A quick Google of "Sci-Fi Visual Novel Danya" told me that it is called The Symbiant RE:Union (a sequel to The Symbiant) and is a Gay Space VN set 3k years in the future.
Homie is making me want to play EW again. Tbh I never finished the campaign, I soft locked myself with too many countries pulling out and got frustrated because I was pretty deep into the campaign. Maybe I should finish it
personally, i love rocketeers! They’re like.. really bad snipers, and you have to Steady Weapon. But destroying cover is so insane they are worth it anyway (and shredder is nice too). Make sure to activate them first on your turn if you want to fire a rocket so you can play around it. Shogun is like a rocketeer mech. Not a big fan of Archers personally… i love the repeatable, guaranteed cover destruction though
Yeah, LW1 is the best. LW2 feels all over the place and overcomplicated, while Terra Invicta is... So. Damn. Slow. LW1 feels just about right, even though it still feels dragged out at times.
i have played it and I *really* disliked it. the low character count was the killer, I very much do not personally enjoy walking four superhumans around, give me twelve goobers instead.
I find your burning hatred of Rocketeers fascinating. For me they're the perfect panic button. Most of the time all they do is sit somewhere in the middle of the pack and steady weapon, and that's more than enough because when something goes wrong, there's no problem that can't be solved with a well placed rocket.
it's true that they're effective sometimes but they are simply unnecessary if played well they do nothing except reduce the loot you bring home using a Rocketeer actively is undercutting your strategy layer because they blow the things up that you want that's why I don't like them
@@cassius_scrungoman If played well they can turn a potential squadwipe into a cake walk. I can't even count how many of my soldiers have been saved by a well placed rocket. Better a successful mission with reduced rewards than 3 dead soldiers or even a failed mission.
i find it best to play in a way that doesn't necessitate a rocket to fix a mission from going to shit im on a lot of painkillers right now cause hospital so I can't really word this in like a very polite way but it's basically like a kind of shit "git gud" argument if you just play with comps that don't have rocketeers you won't need to rely on them anymore and thus bring more loot home and have a healthier strat layer it's better to not need the panic button at all than have it there while knowing it could still fail anyway if it feels like it
@@cassius_scrungoman Maybe I do just need to git gud but relying on things not going wrong is almost never a good idea. It's not like I use rockets in every bad situation, I fire one maybe once every 6 missions and most of those are shredder rockets to soften up a pack of mutons. My strat layer is always fine, the only time I run low on weapon fragments is when it's time to research plasma, in summer I have more sectoid, thin man, floater, drone and muton corpses than I can ever use and I'm rarely short on anything but muton elites, cyberdiscs and ethereals. And when I really need a rocket, I'm always thankful I brought one.
@@bmobmo6438 they don't pay you to bring the rockets back. having one soldier slot dedicated to a panic button you press one in a half dozen missions seems like a waste of time, space, and xp when that soldier could be a sniper instead
Interesting videos, I haven't played LW yet but I think I want to. Just as an aside, I'd suggest not using the trademark symbol in video titles as you could have some unnecessary difficulties created by "pretending" to hold a trademark you don't actually have.
Alright alright I'll do another Long War campaign stop yelling at me. Really though, there is a critical lack of long-form Long War content out here that isn't just actual gameplay. If you're ever feeling the spice for a longer video essay on the subject, you've got at least 100 views from me alone I'll be running it on repeat until the script is drilled into my head
Beagle? uggh. That guy drives me crazy with his non stop heming and hawing about every little move. I tried it based on what you said, but just cannot take it. And anyone else coming into this, do not listen to this guy about rocketeers. All flyers are made of metal, and I have lost count on how many times my rocketeer has blown 5 or 6 drones and or floaters out of the sky. They also turn two mechtoids plus their little sectoid platoons into shredded swiss cheese. Mutons also like to clump up around cars or a wall. Then whamo, they all lose their cover and half their health. Need to capture some aliens ? Rocketeers can soften up for ya. Now LW1 does do something stupid, by having this rocket scatter mechanic. No farking idea where they got that. No hand held rockets or missles in modern warfare go running off willy nilly like in LW1. It is stupid. I always play with save scum active, just because of my visceral hatred of this mechanic. Rockets go where i point dude, no arguments, there is no farking way we would take 2 steps back merely cause some aliens show up. I also save scum level ups. Each soldier gets a mulligan on level up. These are supposed to be the soldiers chosen from the elite of each countries elite. Also I love playing with training roulette. It hurts sometimes, but when your gunner gets close quarters combat, you are in for hella fun.

At this point this is addiction.
correct!
New to long war, 2 months in. got a C on the first month and a B- on the 2nd month. Any big tips for me? I'm super early on, I feel like I don't know what I am doing for the direction of the base building/campaign, I am trying to aim for MEC's as I recall them being great in EW. Oh also, I started with Long War Rebalance, I heard it was great.
step 1 is to uninstall lwr
Is there a list with your mod recommendations?
9:40 I THOUGHT I'M THE ONLY ONE WHO NOTICED, WHY IS XCOM 2 SO BEEFY 😢
Rocketeer and assault video when? (Also good video, pretty good)
1,465 Hours, you got to pump up those numbers. Those are rookie numbers.
Aiming angles is my favorite long war option ngl.
Do you have a playthrough posted anywhere? I find LW1 to be the most watchable game out there
i have a base defense on my second channel but no proper playthrough because I'm not a let's play channel
Kinda wonder if you'd be interested in Xenonauts with what you've covered here
if we're sharing our builds, I always rush Genemods and make them Assaults, Alien hybrid Soldier's bumrushing the Aliens with their trench brooms gives me life.
And the ability to mod it has also increased its longevity just like Bethesda games or as it would have been forgotten by now probably.
6:10 Ok, I need to know what's that visual novel is called ?
A quick Google of "Sci-Fi Visual Novel Danya" told me that it is called The Symbiant RE:Union (a sequel to The Symbiant) and is a Gay Space VN set 3k years in the future.
@Cassius 6:07 game name?
If shen is listening i too volunteer
Homie is making me want to play EW again. Tbh I never finished the campaign, I soft locked myself with too many countries pulling out and got frustrated because I was pretty deep into the campaign. Maybe I should finish it
What mods do you use? It looks like you have some cosmetic ones
Haha, even in 2023 the "rocketeers are bad" myth still propagates. Really really good video otherwise though! Subbed, and nice work.
Long war is so hard. All my soldiers die in the 1st mission!!
What was that Visual Novel?
what do you think of xenonauts?
personally, i love rocketeers!
6:30 nah i watch drifter grenadier run only it's still struggle as normal xcom games.
I get a feeling you would like chaos gate daemonhunters. No overwatch cheese , flanks are amazing and there is no % shots to hit only cover.
i have played it and I *really* disliked it. the low character count was the killer, I very much do not personally enjoy walking four superhumans around, give me twelve goobers instead.
@@cassius_scrungoman Yeah. They refuse to change it from 4 character. Don't know why just that people are asking it for ages.
I find your burning hatred of Rocketeers fascinating. For me they're the perfect panic button. Most of the time all they do is sit somewhere in the middle of the pack and steady weapon, and that's more than enough because when something goes wrong, there's no problem that can't be solved with a well placed rocket.
it's true that they're effective sometimes but they are simply unnecessary
if played well they do nothing except reduce the loot you bring home
using a Rocketeer actively is undercutting your strategy layer because they blow the things up that you want
that's why I don't like them
@@cassius_scrungoman If played well they can turn a potential squadwipe into a cake walk. I can't even count how many of my soldiers have been saved by a well placed rocket. Better a successful mission with reduced rewards than 3 dead soldiers or even a failed mission.
i find it best to play in a way that doesn't necessitate a rocket to fix a mission from going to shit
im on a lot of painkillers right now cause hospital so I can't really word this in like a very polite way
but it's basically like a kind of shit "git gud" argument
if you just play with comps that don't have rocketeers you won't need to rely on them anymore and thus bring more loot home and have a healthier strat layer
it's better to not need the panic button at all than have it there while knowing it could still fail anyway if it feels like it
@@cassius_scrungoman Maybe I do just need to git gud but relying on things not going wrong is almost never a good idea.
I.... Hate you.... I am going to need to reinstall longwar and add another 500 hours to my count.
You ready to make that 40 minute video yet?
you should definately try LW rebalance!!!!
How does one learn long war? There are no good comprehensive tutorial videos on youtube.
watch a lot of beaglerush
Alright alright I'll do another Long War campaign stop yelling at me. Really though, there is a critical lack of long-form Long War content out here that isn't just actual gameplay. If you're ever feeling the spice for a longer video essay on the subject, you've got at least 100 views from me alone I'll be running it on repeat until the script is drilled into my head
the greatest mistake of XCOM 2 and Chimera Squad was not having the MEC units, the robot does not count
i tried watching beaglerush and i can’t remember why but i ragequited… as opposed to marbs or jorbs XP
Make more xcom video please my lord
on what I covered everything
@@cassius_scrungoman um I wouldn't mind more clarification on why long war 2 isn't as good but thanks for replying your content is peak
@@Granox i would have to play more long war 2 for that
@@cassius_scrungoman I will wait my lord
should give battletech a try
long war rebalance is based because of xcom scamper. that's the only reason to ever play it
Beagle?
