I’m surprised the pyramids of Giza didn’t make the list. In photos it looks like it’s in the desert. In reality it’s in the city. Right across the street from KFC/Pizza Hut. Some guy will follow you through the entire complex and try to get you to buy a large wooden cat. Someone else will try to sell you a ride on a camel. And someone else will offer to take your photo for free and then refuse to give you back your phone until you pay. It’s still something to see. But certainly not as advertised.

The Iceland one is so overstated it’s ridiculous. I’ve been to Iceland twice, if you go in the off season it is virtually empty. We had times where we drove 3+ without seeing a single soul. Iceland is literally the most spectacular place I’ve ever been to. Considering 80% of tourists stick to Reykjavik, golden circle and the south coast, that leaves the majority of the island open to exploring. Westfjords, highlands and east fjords are all super remote and unimaginably beautiful

We’d go see cool Mayan temples, swim in cenotes and lie on spectacular beaches during the day, then go to crazy clubs like Coco Bongo at night. While the resort area is one big tourist trap, there was real things to go see and do. I had the joy of visiting Disney world and Disneyland within a couple months of each other, so I was able to make some direct comparisons...
Disney world is very spread out, but you don't go there for one day, you go for a week. A park a day, (4 hours in Epcot to get drunk should be enough for there) repeat those you want to see again. The staff was friendly, and since it was winter after Thanksgiving, before Christmas break, it wasn't too busy, which helped. Too cold for the locals at 65F (15c?) But shorts for us northerners who left a blizzard, and -20F (-30c?) degree weather...
Disneyland on the other hand, was full of rude people, rude staff, broken rides, long lines (end of February), and no Mr Toads Wild Ride. Why even bother with that missing?

Simon's points about the Maldives are correct if you stay on a resort island... but you don't have to stay on those islands. You can stay on a local island, with a Maldivian family, in very nice rooms with all the comforts of a 4 star resort for 10% of the price. The resort islands don't want people to know a local variant exists, so most people haven't heard about it.

I got that feeling right away when it was called "Disney World" in general without mentioning that it's actually 4 individual parks with different themes and attractions. You can choose to visit all 4 or just your favorite(s). I get that Disney parks aren't everyone's favorite cup of tea but at least do a little research and talk about the various other details that makes it not the best place to visit (context for the cost, lines, food, etc.). But they clearly don't know what they're talking about.

If you're a student its an amazing city - over 50% of the population are students and if you get away from the obvious tourist trap that is the Tower you'll find people talking, partying, playing music, and just being young just about any time of day. I went to the Tower around 1am with a friend and ended up celebrating a student's birthday in the piazza there - then the cops guarding the tower decided to drink some wine and eat some food with us while we all celebrated - I think thats an experience you won't find in Rome or Florence. Also, the food in Pisa is ridiculously cheap when compared to other parts of Tuscany, and fresh seafood can be easily transported up the river from Livorno. I thought Pisa was extremely underrated but yes, if you're an older tourist who sticks to the crowds, you'll be disappointed. Still prefer Pisa over Florence though! Even better yet, try checking out Siena next time you're in Italy - its essentially a prettier Pisa.

The historic "Altstadt" on the southern bank of the Elbe was burnt in the bomb raid and the ensuing firestorm which in total killed 30000 people.
They did rebuild the imposing "Canaletto view" buildings just along the river at a huge cost - but have a look at how the very central "Prager Straße" (near the central Station) was rebuilt - it looks like from a 1960s postcard. Ironically this area is still called the Altstadt - although it just is not the Old Town any more.
However, I disagree with the statement that Dresden as a whole sucks - while most of the oldest part was destroyed and poorly rebuilt, the Neustadt (much of which dated from around 1900) remained mostly intact and was beautifully restored after reunification and Dresden has beautiful suburbs like Loschwitz with lovely Art Nouveau villas.

Dresden is worth a visit if you take the time to stop by the art galleries and the opera and to take in the details of the restauration of the "Frauenkirche" which is amazing. I think it has ist charm when you arrive on the river Elbe and see the skyline. However, it's small and can be seen in a day or two. Germany has many scenic routes - which may have been invented by tourism agencies, but they stop by scenic or historic places and all have their charm.

I lived for 5 years in Würzburg ..for me it is a beautiful city, although yes, small and with a lot of tourists. The best there (for me) are the wine fests, particularly those organised directly in the gardens of the Residenz palace and in the Weinberg am Stein (the wineyards overlooking the city). Autumn is really pretty (with much less tourists), and it is lovely particularly in the Federweisser and Zwiebelküchen season. I understand it might be a bit disappointing if you were to travel from the other side of the world ONLY to visit it, but I would definitely recommend to spend at least a day there if you are already in the area (it's a nice mid-point between Frankfurt airport and Nürnberg or Bamberg, for instance)

"The bus will leave at 17PM with or without it´s passengers"!!! What the ffff! So with 45 minutes left. Some of us where still able to get the tickets, go up to visit the tower and run back to the bus. A bit unpleasant.
Either case the really funny was the reactions. I´m Portuguese so we kept things relatively discrete, comments with nearby persons, a couple from Netherlands and a lady, I believe from Spain, that´s pretty much it no big fuzz.
An Italian couple slightly down the queue made comments also. But in a quite loud tone, shouting with the driver.
But another couple, Americans further up in the queue won the cup. The guy shout to the driver, not as loud as the Italian... "we´re Americans you can´t leave us here".
The entire group in the vicinity laughed. Honestly to this day I still crack laughing when I recall this episode. LOL

Universal staff - Rude and unhelpful. Disney world cast - smiling and genuinely friendly and helpful.

I can only speak as an American, but vacation time is hard to come by if you get any at all and travel is expensive for most people. The reason everybody crams into the same areas to see the same landmarks is that they only have enough time and money for this one shot so they go where the " well traveled" people say is the best. If travel were less of a luxury, more tourists would risk it off the beaten path.

@Evi1M4chine Visiting the old world is complicated by the fact we have these things called the Atlantic and Pacific oceans cutting us off from it. Whereas Europe and Asia is a continuous landmass.

I noticed my Facebook friend from France, Sandra has a lot of adventure in her life. I figured it has to do with vacation time. I'm 30 and have never even flown much less seen another country.

Yep vacation time sucks. Job security is worse too and most people should be trying to transition into some form of self employment. But also don't be lazy and only research the popular spots to travel. Get into travel communities lie Couchsurfing forums and go to music festivals, meetup with other travelers, road trip, camp and allow for other cultures to include you and show you around. Also look at Expat communities, and airbnb gatherings.

Come to England, bring the wife and kids I'll show you around and even put you up. Might be a spare room and a camp bed but it'll be free ;-)
Travelling is expensive because "we" dont have the contacts in far away lands... break down those barriers and the world opens up.
