What trials unite not only Harry Potter or Frodo Baggins but many of literature's most interesting heroes? And what do ordinary people have in common with these literary heroes? Matthew Winkler takes us step-by-step through the crucial events that make or break a hero.

Other things I've learned to make a good hero:
1.- Never make it perfect. Imperfect characters are the most perfect for any story. This gives you a wide screen to make them grow and learn new things as they chase their motivations.
2.- Make them lose or fail at one point: If we all learn from our very own mistakes and failures, then why not heroes? This tips can let you develop them as you write the story.
The second point is where the fun is.
King : im not strong.
Saitama : Then get strong.

One of my favourite types of hero is them being less of a hero and more of a protagonist, where there actions there doing aren’t necessarily good or bad, kind of a mix of the two. I really like it when fiction blurs the line between hero and villian in order to question you or change who is the villian and who is the hero

A hero does the right things for the right reasons. A hero helps the most people and hurts the least.
Just like a TRUE Lawful Good should..!
Nice idea but in a zero sum game, whatever you win, someone else looses, who are you to decide who deserves to win? You can't maximise and minimise a value at the same time, and that's taking an analytical approach. In practical terms, most people can't agree on what is the right reason even less can agree on the right action.
No that’s a Mary Sue...
Awsamazing Eden Heroes are our perspectives for example a doctor saves a life, to you he is a hero but beats his wife without anyone knowing. Is he good or bad?
Aries PanzerLeader89 that implies they don't face any problems. I never said they don't hurt anyone, get hurt themselves. Or that their reasons are justified. I just said to the right things for the right reasons. Doesn't mean they don't have character flaws.
Wow! Beautiful narrative and incredible animation. Well done to everyone involved in this project.

We are all heroes in our own ways. From teaching someone something to helping someone during a bad time. We are all truly heroes.
Every one is a hero in his life
because
Everyone is fighting with their problems
You don't know .
Some time even to live is an act of courage.
I’ve seen many hero movies and I’ve noticed two types of heroes and journeys.
First type of hero is someone having extraordinary powers which he/she uses for the good of the crowd.
Second type doesn’t have anything special and struggles to find it but is extremely motivated to help others. In turn people start helping that person and with the help of others that person becomes the hero that he/she always wanted to be.
But why not both? *smirks in willful but powerful characters*
Batman is a great example to the second type, that's why he's my favourite. First type is like Spiderman or superman. The similarities between them is that they have to go through a lot of suffering to understand and have the mental capability to be a hero

In my own opinion, the one who know fear and make a bravery choice to fight against it. No matter success or not , or what reason behind, they are heroes. Only the one face their deepest darkest fear shall be worthy to gain great strength. And they are gonna be stronger no matter how many failures they met. Those failures will be the best teachers of the heroes. What they cut down is the weaker , earlier themselves but not their enemy.
WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT he said Frodo is a human! Frodo is a Hobbit. Even though they may have evolved from humans they are definately not humans.

A hero is the one who steps up to the plate without being asked.
A hero is the one who does their best to make the right decision.
A hero is the one who learns to live with the wrong ones and moves on.
A hero is not always the strongest, the smartest, or the bravest.
But a hero is the one that will stand by your side.
Through thick and thin.
A hero will bring you food when you are hungry or drink when you are thirsty.
When you are sick a hero will tell you you will be better soon.
And when you are about to take your last breath.

“Amazingly Dope” is amazingly dope hehe
This video skips a crucial part of the hero's journey: refusal of the call. The hero refuses the call to adventure initially. You might think this step is skippable but it is not. Refusal of the call is huge in making or breaking the hero. Either they fully succumb to fear and fail to go to the special world, or their mentor helps them to accept their fears and continue anyway.
That sounds a lot like premature angst before finally just getting on with the adventure. lol
If it matters by character development, then its characterization. Therefore, not included in a specifically story-driven formula such as the one shown in the video.
Immersible But if its happening to the main character, isn't it an important part of the story? Sure, its a temporary situation, but every story with the hero's journey has to address the hero's anxieties at some point. We won't connect with the character as well otherwise.
Noah MacGillivray Like how other literary elements have its own categories, characterization and plot development are two completely separate concepts. Even though they might intertwine and come from the same source, they are still separate.
Btw did you know, there are ways to tell a hero story without learning a single thing about the main character? ;3
Alright, I see your point. Personally I prefer to see the hero's concerns and fears because it makes the story seem realistic, but I can see where it might not be necessary.
Also, do you have examples of such stories? I'd like to read them :)
Yes but it's less common these 12 are just the most common ideas
whenever I read a book, I always come back to this video. the hero's journey is very common
although, these stages don't exactly happen in order. sometimes some stages repeat.
This is sooo entertaining! Thank you for making this!! I am trying to make a story and its so exciting to create it by using this video's preference. I think long days later, my story will be even complex and entertaining as I have more experience and knowledge. Thank you so much, TED- Ed!!!

I wrote this during my final days as an undergraduate student
"Before you become the superhero, I am going to test you", they said.
"If you listen and learn, you don't have to worry at all", they said.
" If you practice it well, it will be easy", they said.
I listen, taking note of all the important thing they teach.
I learn, by asking lots of question I don't understand.
I sacrifice the nights, the hookups, the chats and my mental health to practice.
I practice and practice, till I become too exhaustive to practice again.
The day has come, "I am going to be a Hero" , I told myself.
"I will finally join the elites", I said again.
" The test is here", said the the town carrier, "get prepared"
I quickly revised everything I have learned to make sure I didn't left anything.
And the test was given.
"Where should I start?"
"How should I approach this?"
"Is this meant for me?"
I questioned, knowing very well I will not get a response.
"You have 15 cycles" they said.
Knowing how quick the cycle is I started solving the test, without even measuring if it will be enough.
But before I could even finish a quarter of my task, I heard "The circles have ended"
"WHAATT!" I screamed, "but the circles are not enough!".
"I am good enough?"
"Why didn't I practice more?"
"I am even fit for this?"
"Shouldn't I just run?"
I questioned myself, all while the imposter syndrome increases, all while I am breaking inside.
"Is this really the test?, or is my reaction after it the test?" I questioned myself again, knowing very well the first question is the answer.
"We shall see the outcome" I said knowing very well I did my best.

Geeks always gonna be geeks...

A real hero is someone not expecting a reward, doing an act that others wouldn't do l, or not have the courage to do, they are people who can't have happyness because they suffer so that people don't have to and I believe that a hero who saves us, would be saved in return
It's December, so this video reminds me why Frank Capra's hero of George Bailey in "It's A Wonderful Life" is so great, he's a hero who actually wants to go on a great adventure but doesn't, rather he chooses/sacrifices his dreams of adventure to stay home and help his community. Ultimately he is a hero, not because of doing a bunch of extraordinary things, but by doing "ordinary things" extraordinarily well -i.e. being a good husband, father, and an ethical local banker. We seem to be always searching for one great superhero when all we really need is just a lot more George and Mary Bailey's...a search that should be more realistic I hope.
This is my favorite TEDEd video. I come back every once in a while. 😄

Hmm, yea he could have said person instead of human...
I think that's racist
Broockle There something wrong with you? (Wait, I know the answer to that; YES.) Racist? Against something that doesn't exist? No matter the species, dumbass, in fiction they are entwined with human qualities - and by qualities, I mean personalities and ideology, not overly hairy feet. So you would call it "human." Not person, which implies nothing other than you're not an non-personified rock.
Amber Main
So you really think we're alone in the universe? I thought your kind went extinct.
Broockle You think hobbits are real and living on another planet? I thought your kind stopped believing in stuff like that at age 12. I'm talking about FICTION, dumbass. There's no other known species as intelligent as ours. Hate to burst your bubble, but we haven't met any intelligent aliens yet, nor have they made contact with us. (I'm expecting you'll retort an alien conspiracy here, right?) So, when discussing FICTION, everything is based on HUMAN characteristics. Because HUMANS are the only intelligent species we can base upon. (Ooo, now are you going make a retort about - insert animal here - being intelligent even though I'm CLEARLY talking about advancement, not the ability to eat food and detect enemies?)
Campbell: The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.
Soul stone: Hello!
exceptional narration from Matthew Winkler
What makes a VILLAIN:
Just like the hero, starts at status quo. Second, realization: an event changes the way they see their world, makes them see only the horrible things. Come to the conclusion that violence is the answer to their new found hatred. Third, preparation: He learns a new power,(he learns magic, gains followers etc.)that he will use to change the world. Fourth, reveal: he shows his new power to the world, through actions, threats, or maybe he challenges an authority figure, or protector. Fifth, demonstration: he shows the world he's no joke by destroying something, maybe he defeats the hero. The demonstration can also act as the reveal, or can come beforehand. Sixth, trials: the villain and hero constantly clash, sometimes one of them wins, but doesn't kill the other. Seventh, great battle: at this stage, the villain and hero know each other more than they know themselves. This can span anywhere from a few hours, to a few years. Final, result: he may win or lose, but one dies, and the other gets their way.

+Makael Conda Not all villains resort to violence... But other than that, this is pretty good!
That's because villains are heroes too but they're the hero of the other side of the world which is the bad side :/
I've always wanted more stories to address that :) multiple perspectives make for a pretty interesting story.
+Makael Conda did you put this together or do you have it from somewhere? i like it ! :)
Saitama:
1. Life is meaningless
2. He decides to become a hero
3. Does 100 Pushes, squads and run 10km a day until he becomes bald
4. Becomes the most powerful living thing in the universe
5. Life is meaningless
Ironically painful.
Be a hero just for fun

Everything is Optional
@@user-tzzglsstle585e38 that's very true, but we are talking about one punch man here
But can't he listen to another calling in his life and then repeat, literal monsters are sometimes equal to the ordinary challenges we face
One of the best videos TED-ED has ever made.
"He faces death and possibly even dies"
Ahh I see now..... *People die when they're killed.*
@1D-18 Sze Hong Yiu Sophie Sometimes you must die inside and lost every fluke of yourself to became a better person. Its your core, your essence that changes and that must be nurtured without any traces of you left behind. A person only can be a real better person when he or she understand that everything, every belief, everything she stands for might not be right and then, discard these things.
@1D-18 Sze Hong Yiu Sophie ohhh i see now. I dont usually have anime memes as referências but then that must be ok

Sensational Brief Analysis of the True Meaning of a Hero. Brightness.
Disheartened halls of wretched glory
We stretch our wings in cold despair
The safety of the hearth is holy
Protects us from the midnight air
How often have we heard the ballad
The bards have sung of certain threat
How often have we dreamt of peril
Afraid of subsequent regret
Today shall be the day, we whisper
To free us from this panicked state
But in the face of all the horrors
We doubt ourselves, we hesitate
Don't go alone, take courage with you
A voice within and yet so far
Resolve the echo of the aeons
The chaos of the dancing star
Soon starts the journey up the mountain
For years on end it seems to last
And as we struggle to its summit
The Future turns back to the Past
Alas begins the fight to climb back
Endurance our biggest aid
But once disposed of all that binds us
The triumph withers, starts to fade
For now the entrance is upon us
That leads into the place we dread
Our demons greet us from its darkness
Formed by the fears that we once fed
A coward would reject this treasure
A hero stare into abyss
Prepared to die, accepting failure
We take the leap, follow our bliss
The moment we have slain the dragon
The second we can claim reward
Confusion seeps into our passion
Should we withdraw or seize the sword
A long and weary road ahead
More gruesome as the one behind
With careful steps we're tracing strides
Our eyes wide open, yet so blind
Thus ends the journey and our lives
And with them our desire
The cups filled till the brim with joy
Our bellies full of fire
To share divine complexity
Death favors sweet release
Until the day we rise again
Allowing us to Rest in Peace
This is fantastic. Did you write it?
@@sheldonwilliams3921 Thank you, brother! It pretty much wrote itself. Something knocked on my door, and all I did, was let it in. : )
I think I am a bit late, but this gorgeous writing. Great job! 😁👍
