Pretty sure people draw the line at that because it’s logically an actual murder attempt at worst, and severe assault at best. Like that’s not…hard to figure out. Also the line drawing has more to do with where it seems reasonable for the characters to draw the line, since no one here thinks anything that these girls did is actually acceptable. We’re just saying that if you’re going to hold a grudge over nothing else, it seems like attempted murder would be the one. While bankruptcy and framing for drug possession are both incredibly shitty, it’s honestly hilarious that y’all are confused over people finding **hitting someone with a car** to be worse. While it's an enjoyably crazy movie, Drea must be a very forgiving person to stay friends with Eleanor after she hit her with a car, and plotted an elaborate revenge scheme against her. Nothing brings besties together like revenge!
i feel like eleanor must also be very forgiving seeing as she was institutionalized because of drea. i think they summed it up pretty well by calling themselves “fucked-up soulmates”

They could’ve thought it was creepy or weird at their age and Drea didn’t even remember until Clarissa (i forgot her name lol) mentioned it. If she did earlier in the car, I think it would’ve been a different story, but she wanted to help get back at Clarissa for Eleanor at least and bad about it at the end at least.
I couldn't believe that I guessed the "twist" right away. One clue to the major twist is Eleanor's scream in the car while driving Drea home. Upon a second viewing, it's obvious that she's frustrated over Drea not being able to tell that the story is about her, nor recognise her own culpability in outing Eleanor.

I read online that Camila Mendes announced that Do Revenge would be the last role she was doing as a high schooler, and I'm glad for her that she's taking this step. Not that she can't pull off the role, but at 28, still being stuck in the casting category of teenager must be exhausting in so many different ways, and we all know how rampant the practice of casting people in their late 20's as teens is in Hollywood.
Precisely, it was wonderful to see Camila in a juicy role. She recently announced that she'll only be accepting adult roles from now on, stating that at 28 years old, she's getting too old to be convincing as a teenager.

To me, the whole movie is NOT about The rivalry between the two, but their friendship. It was never about how they would destroy each other, but how they ultimately find comfort in each other BECAUSE they wanted to destroy each other. Like Eleanor said that she was so close to forgiving Drea because they were actually becoming friends. Despite years of hate and resentment, despite the thorough planning, despite everything, Eleanor was ready to forgive. Why wouldn't she do it again? As Drea then says, the time spent with Eleanor was the happiest she has been in so long (if I remember the dialogue correctly), so why wouldn't she give this another chance? They have found closeness despite the hate or perhaps because of all the hate. It perfectly encaptulates the complex friendship of teenager girls, who, from a young age, are taught to compete with each other. Who is the prettiest, who gets the boy, all that stuff. The stereotype of girls being two faced, acting all friendly with another girl just to talk shit behind her back is a bad stereotype, yes, but not completely unfounded. Friendships between teenage girls are toxic and wild and full of condratictions. They are fueled with competitiveness and jealousy, but also a deep rooted yearning for love. This struggle between what society expects from young girls (to seek perfection and be better than other women) vs the inherent human need for companionship. I can't count how many times I had fought with my friends back then, how many times they had fought, but ultimately, we always made up. We cried about it sometimes, just to fight again a few weeks later. Teenage girls hate each other, but at the same time, they love each other just as much. There is comfort in the chaos and that is what the movie is about. I hope I explained my thoughts well. It's a bit rambly. Also, I wanna add that of course this isn't everyones experience, but it is a very common one, from what I've seen. Not just in my teenage years, but in online discussions too.
Yeah. I didn't really have friends during the bulk of my teenage years, just people I was friendly with when we were in the same room, but in my preteen years, I didn't like my friends and they didn't like me. So much of our friendships were just a facade in order to feel loved and accepted.
yes!!! and i love the fact that they came together to bring max, the symbol of patriarchy and all other hierarchies, down, and it's AFTER that they became actual friends? what eleanor does to drea is pretty unforgivable, especially with the power and money she has, but i think their dynamic mirrors a lot of teenage girls' friendships with each other. i find the toxic competitiveness and jealousy to be mostly a symptom of patriarchal values, so i think it was nice this was the note they ended on.
Genuinely surprised by how much I liked this movie. The only reason I watched this is because of the revenge plot which is my guilty pleasure and came away very happy with what I saw. Definitely had some issues but overall a very enjoyable experience for me.
I think Drea forgiving Eleanor makes perfect sense because she realizes that she did to Eleanor the same that Max did to her. She absolutely destroyed someone who trusted her for absolutely no reason
Makes sense? Yes. But it’s not about that. It’s building a great story and a great twist only to not see that twist out and to go with the easy, boring, nice ending. Kinda ruined everything they were building.
I think the writer went all in on that twist, so there was nothing left in the tank for the follow up. To be fair, that scene where Drea tells Eleanor before the party "I created you, I can destroy you" and then proceeds to do just that by reminding everyone how she got her "nose-y" nickname *is* the stand off, weak tho it may be. The movie already overstays its welcome a bit and the twist doesn't happen until an hour and half in - they just didn't have the time to play out the Drea vs. Eleanor battle properly.
To me, the whole point was that the battle between them did not matter. Drea couldn't hurt Eleanor like that without feeling remorse because she had started to realize the damage she left in her wake. If wouldn't feel the same to hurt someone who had been hurt and was lashing out because of it. That's why taking out the asshole rich boy was so satisfying. By contrast, he had no reason to be the biggest prick in Miami. Drea became that way to adapt to what she felt she needed to survive. Eleanor was a victim of Drea's who wanted to hurt her for real heinous acts but that subsided as she started to understand Drea better. Homeboy had no harsh upbringing, no one had ever wronged him. He was a spoiled, entitled sociopath who did everything to control others just because he could and played the victim over imagined sleights.
It subsided?? WHEN?! Eleanor was still manipulating Drea right up until Drea exposed her as "Nosey". Drea seems to have a conscience because she immediately followed Eleanor to make sure she was alright! Eleanor had already gotten close to Drea BEFORE she went all psycho on her & threatened to frame her mom for stealing drugs & then hit Drea with her car! She even held her & comforted her. That's cold. She was still playing head games with her when she visited her in the hospital. She scared me in that kitchen scene! (Kudos to Maya Hawke for being terrifying. I honestly didn't know WHAT she was going to do!) So how can you say it subsided as she got to know Drea?! It didn't subside until after Drea exposed her nose job! @DonnaBrooks Eleanor WAS in fact going to drop her plan as she a) got to know Drea and thought they were becoming friends. It was only AFTER Drea callously forgot Eleanor's birthday after being told A DAY BEFORE that she decided to execute the rest of her plan and expand it to the entire senior class. Yes, she was manipulating Drea into committing heinous acts of cruelty (not that Drea wouldn't have done something herself), but the moments that they connected like when Drea finds out that Max was always cheating on her (she was lucky not to catch something from that manho-ing asshole) were genuine and showed her that Drea was a cunt of a human being but more complex and deserving of at least some sympathy.
Agreed, it was one of the most enjoyable teen movies I've seen in a while, and although some aspects were a little ludcrious, I had a great time watching overall.
I think it was crazy in just the right way, proper amount of camp and even though the twist is obvious you can understand how the resolution lands well. They are psycho soulmates and there’s something so nice about a friendship where that shitty sloppy part of you doesn’t have to be hidden, is it borderline toxic kinda sorta but reciprocity is important in both affection and atonement.
When I saw the school uniforms I was gagging. I love the homage they paid to all the iconic teen movies of 2000s. It wasn't mean girls and Heather's level for me. But I enjoyed it.
This movie pulls scenes from past iconic teen movies and the impact it leaves, gives the audience with a feel of nostalgia, and they were placed in such perfect moments.
Precisely, the soundtrack and references were gloriously 90's, and I love how they casted Sarah Michelle Gellar as the Principal, arguably as a shout out to her role as a schemer in "Cruel Intentions", AKA the best teen revenge movie ever made!

Fully disagree about the ending of the movie being a "cope-out" or whatever. This movie is a great homage to 2000s teen movies and I believe that they nailed the conflict and conclusion. Eleanor and Drea were both pretty similar in the end, they found comfort in eachother and mutually decided that their friendship was worth much more than a "revenge" against eachother meanwhile they've grown so attached. This ending was to be expected and it reminds of Mean Girls (2004) when all the girls of the school admitted that they have all at one point or another said shit behind a friend's back, thus ending in all of them apologizing one by one. Do Revenge is a great movie. Even a modern classic in my opinion, EASILY overshadowing all the other stupid teenage shit netflix has made (kissing booth, tall girl, etc.)
Also them battling out at the end would have left them empty and hollow, by the end, like their heart was not in it. at the end they were kinda looking for an out. I mean Eleanor even said herself that she came close to calling the whole thing off a they wee actually becoming friends.
i kinda loved the idea of performative wokeness being used as a main villain. also this movie was honestly one of my favorites. it was fun. i wasn’t expecting much, and tbh i don’t think you need to. it reminded me of the insanity that is heathers but without the murder, and felt like a love letter to classic teen movies. it also used gen z slang in a way that felt more natural to me. overall it’s a 10/10, something you can watch and laugh every now and then and walk away singing “everyone is dumb” :”)
This movie was crazy, chaotic, and weird but I enjoyed every minute of it! The plot, the story telling style, the costumes. Everything about it came together perfectly. Finally a modern teen movie that can maybe stand the test of time. We haven’t had that in so long.
Also; I believe that I read somewhere that Cami won’t be playing teenagers anymore after the last season of Riverdale and I’m really excited to see what she’ll do next!
In defense of the ending, the reason why it worked really well for me is because the movie chose to value female friendship over female rivalry/hatred. This was important for me because often times in movies done from the perspective of teenage girls such a huge part of the movie revolves around girls being jealous of each other/hating each other/trying to destroy each other to the point where it feels like this narrative choice has almost become a cliche itself, especially given that so many movies don’t do the best job at addressing the internalized misogyny that a lot of young girls have to grapple with. But I do feel like this movie was able to show some of that and indirectly address it without directly telling the audience that’s what it was doing and with the ending they were able to show how inspite of all the toxicity that can come with young female friendship as long as you can own up to your shit and learn to forgive each other than you can find a connection that’s on the level of finding a “soulmate” and that can be a very beautiful thing worth fighting to keep.
But I feel like if someone attempts to murder you, you shouldn't forgive them and be friends. Just becuase you're a women doesn't mean you can't be a bad person.

I liked the ending. I've always found it more satisfying when the villain and protagonist ultimately join forces against a common enemy, and Drea's ex is established as an enemy to all women from the moment he leaked the video. His crimes were driven by his power, selfishness, and pure evil, whereas Eleanor's were a reaction to having been wronged, which is somewhat justified. So after the twist, there were two villains, but only one of them was fundamentally irredeemable. Besides, Camila and Maya are too cute of a duo to fr break apart
i think what the movie needed was ONE more genuine non revenge related bonding moment between the two. then it would've been way more convincing that the girls really did want to reconcile as friends at the end rather than fight it out. the movie moves so fast that you don't realize, oh yeah they've technically spent the entire year together bonding and scheming. that being said, i was still pretty invested in their friendship by the end. i definitely liked this take down the shitty ex ending more than a hypothetical pit the two crazy girls against each other ending.
I honestly kind of liked that the lovers' lines were kind of a side-story and not rooted in the main story. I understand why it can be bothering, but I'm glad to have a good teen movie where the love stories take a back seat. They may not seem necessary at first glance, but I think the writers went with that to avoid a will they/won't they between Drea and Eleanor and focus on an enemies to friends and revenge plot rather than make this a potential enemies to lovers. While I agree that Drea's guy is a bit bland and forgettable, I thought that Eleanor's gal was at least a bit fleshed out. She has somewhat of a backstory (as much as a side character can have in a movie of this length), and Talia managed to make her character instantly likeable.
i actually really liked that drea and eleanor became friends again. not for any real plot or character reasons but just because i love the idea of two insane teenage girls becoming friends
This plot twist would've been such an awesome turning point for a thriller movie! Really think they should have leaned into this direction and make it to seem like a fun 90's movie in the beginning and then turn into a dark thriller.
I think that the very low expectations that we have for Netflix originals heavily contributed to the overall hype this movie got. It was fun and different, but yeah some people really portray it as some sort of cinematic masterpiece and I truly believe that it's because we DID NOT see it coming since the last movies and series in the genre have been garbage and utterly disappointing. I myself have been pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it and would actually rewatch it and still appreciate it.
I actually personally felt Maya Hawke’s performance was really memorable lol I think she gets every stage of Eleanor’s character (from unassuming to dorky to villain) quite well while still staying consistent within it. I didn’t think as much of it at first but after the reveal I thought she was deliciously evil enough while still being regretful especially at the party
I feel like by the end, the writers were too conflicted with that they wanted to do with the characters. The chemistry between the two leads is obviously something any writer would want to take advantage of, but THEY SET UP SUCH AN EPIC RIVALRY. It was either take advantage of the set up they’ve put together through skill, and sacrifice a natural chemistry that could absolutely help a movie, or sacrifice this epic storyline they’ve put together for a chemistry they’ll ultimately never committed to. Kind of sad.
I kept thinking that Camila Mendes was just doing Veronica Lodge, but correctly. And that's weird, right? Because Drea is a poor scholarship student, and Veronica is wealthy, and... probably they have other traits that contrast but I can't remember anything about Veronica Lodge. But Drea works because all the Veronica mannerisms and attitudes and wokeisms have a reason to exist in Drea. It's part of a coherent arc with consistent motivations and valid commentary on the hypocrisies of the whole girlboss aesthetic. Veronica just felt like the writers were playing girlboss madlibs.
I’m a bit surprised with how much I enjoyed this movie, because apart from a few exceptions, I seldom enjoy Netflix originals. But this movie was just so delightfully unhinged and over the top and understands how to pay homage to iconic teen movies (Clueless, Cruel Intentions, Mean Girls, Ten Things I Hate About You etc) in the perfect way, that I was immediately drawn in upon watching it. The cast is just perfect (Cami, Maya AND the iconic Sarah Michelle Gellar , and let’s not forget Sophie Turner‘s cameo) and the entire vibe of this movie is just so great - like Dylan said in the video, this movie wholeheartedly embraces its own stupidity, and it really works. Is it perfect? Definitely not. Is the dialogue pretty cringe at times? Sure. But this movie was so entertaining, I’ll let it pass. Really hoping to see more Netflix originals with this vibe.
To understand why they became besties at the end, you have to understand the insanity and obsession of teenage girl best-friendship. It comes just shy (or sometimes, smack in the middle) of a folie de deux.
I think Sophie Turner's character had some use outside of being batshit insane. We got to see how revenge actually had devastating effects and when I learned of the end, I felt rlly bad for her.
I thought it was quite good! Though the end baddie reveal felt like a real cop-out. Kinda robbed the 2 main characters of any real agency or need to deal with their own character flaws
I disagree with your opinion about how it should've ended. the final confrontation couldn't be between D and Eleanor because are we forgetting that the whole thing that started the mess in the first place was the tape? The guy needed to be punished for that so him getting what he deserves was not a bad ending. I do agree that both girls shoulnt have been besties by the end but d did ruin elenor's life. Outing her as a predator I'd seriously messed up. Eleanor went overboard with her plan but it's not like d was innocent. D and elenor having a typical mean girl face off would have been super predictable.

It would have been better with a more Death Becomes Her style ending. Have them do such horrible stuff to each other, and have such dirt on each other, that they're left no choice but a bitter future of being toxic co-dependent frenemies because as bad as things are it still serves their shared deepest desire, social status.
I liked the ending but I definitely the Death Becomes Her opportunity here. It might be silly but I was happy to have these two brilliant, unhinged, passionate women choose each other instead of destroying each other.
I don't think they could have made the ending with Drea defeating Eleanor. That sends the message that she bullied Eleanor as a kid, and she's a hero for beating her as a teen when she wanted payback. But likewise, having Eleanor win sends the message that it's good to get revenge on your preteen bullies even though they are humans too who also have been wronged by others, and no consequences will come from leaking someone's sextape. I think they needed to come together at the end to defeat the problem guy, but they should have just reached an understanding with each other but not become friends. She made Drea pay already, and while what Drea did as a kid was awful and doesn't necessarily need to be forgiven, she was also a stupid kid. She's still not the best person as a teen, but she has grown and realizes what an awful thing Eleanor lived through, and if she wasn't in the situation of having to worry about her mother, would probably show extreme remorse for her actions as a kid if Eleanor had confronted her about it without engaging in the villainy. End with them reaching an understanding that they wronged each other, but that the vicious cycle of revenge isn't worth it, so they will move past it and accept that they both are flawed people who want to work on themselves in the future.
I liked it it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was. I’ve only ever seen camilla in a few episodes of riverdale that I watched with a friend so I was kind of surprised how good she is. Also I loved Sophie turner as Erica.
I loved that this movie knew how to give little nods to classic rom coms and cult classics whilst keeping its own distinct identity and not falling into the trap of just copying them.
I thought like Sophie’s character (Erica) was there in order to be an early example of the lengths Drea will go to for revenge as well as revealing to Eleanor that Drea is still sort of the mean person she thinks and as a means for Eleanor to gain Drea’s trust by throwing Erica under the bus and inspire Eleanor to frame Drea’s mom for drugs by taking a page from Drea’s book which she’s been doing all along. So it shows in hindsight that both Drea and Eleanor will use others as collateral to get what they wan
Turner's character is in the movie because she's an early demonstration of Drea's ability to dish out revenge plots. She's a speedbump for the lead character in the early stage of the plot.
This movie would’ve been so much better if it leaned into its darker side a bit more. Like when Drea said they’ll kill Max and they ACTUALLY do it or if Eleanor wanted revenge on Drea by taking her out. I love the campiness of this film but if it was a pastel teen slasher I would’ve been on the floor
I also loved the scene that Eleanor wiped her lipstick of with her hand after all what she'd had done, referenced to the painting in one of the girl's room's.
I have to be honest, I agree with you on almost every part. Except for the ending. I do very much find it- endearing may be the right word?- that those two maniacs of teen girls manage to realise that in the end there was no winner in the game they were playing. It does feel out of left field but I kinda think it was fitting for the movie a little. They are fighting to death one moment, making up and going for the throat of the Max guy the next. Also it's sort of brilliant in strange way that Drea needed to lean in to her worst impulses to gain a highground... only to realize winning makes her feel worse. And Elenor needed that to realize even after all that scheaming and planning she is not untouchable. I think the pacing was a little off, they should have let the emotions of that argument settle a little. Also, yeah I get seeing the villain be "a man" can be pretty annoying but 1. He was a fantastic villain. The guy had so much fun embodying the soft boi gone wrong and 2. I feel like if the movie finale would be an epic showdown between two girls it would feel worse. Because no neither Elly nor Drea are heartless maniacs. They are maniacs ofcourse, but not heartless and pitting them against each other feels... meanspirited in some way. I respect the movie for doing the smart thing and not going the "taming if the shrew" way of humbling the bitches, but them realizing all that scheaming and anger could actually be used more productively by targeting it at people who are truly profiting from the infighting (Max doing the "Cis hetero men championging" thing couldn't be more on the nose in showing he is ment to represent opressors weaponizing performative activism to prop themselves up even more.") Max was always the main villain and I am glad he is not allowed to get away with his shit.
There were two scenes that hinted Eleanor wasn’t who she said she was. One was the scene where Eleanor and Carissa interacted during the school assembly. Carissa was acting way too nice to a girl whose life she supposedly ruined, which implied we didn’t get the full story from Eleanor. And I actually feel like the twist wasn’t that surprising… I mean, I did not predict Drea being the girl that had outed and humiliated Eleanor, but I feel like from the moment that Eleanor and Drea first interact, you can immediately tell that Eleanor isn’t who she’s saying she is. I feel like there were so many little moments, like the scream in the car, or the many times that Eleanor had this ‚deep in thought‘ look on her face after Drea said something (especially the makeover scene where they’re standing in front of the mirror where Drea says that Narcissists are too busy thinking about themselves, you can see Eleanor looking to the side, with this thoughtful and questioning expression on her face). Idk, I just got the feeling that she wasn’t exactly who she said she was from the beginning

As a teenage girl I can understand why she hates the boyfriend over elanor more. You can get hit by a car and heal in a couple of months. That video will be on the internet forever and Andrea's whole life is based on living a "better" life. The video is going to effect her relationships, her job prospects, if she gets into Yale. Not even to mention how violating it would feel to have everyone you know look at your most vulnerable and to know people you don't even know looking at it without your consent. Personally, I would geniunely rather someone hit me with their car than post a video like that
As an homage to teen movies of the 90s and 00s (oh the memories), the ending worked. The movie is performative - but very deliberately so. Will probably watch again now and again. It was fun.
I guessed the twist from the car scene between Drea and Elenor. I thought that it was odd that they showed Drea's backstory for the revenge, but not for our second protagonist, so I was waiting for Maya Hawke to reveal herself by the 3rd act. I was surprised at how much I liked the movie. Though I have some issues with it, I'd still watch this over Mean Girls any day.
I got the twist right away, like on the first bathroom scene, and spent the rest of the movie gaslighting myself into thinking I was being paranoid because I wanted them to be besties so bad, so when it got revealed I was so disappointed... but in the end, I liked how they are fucked up soulmates, love that very niche trope.
The one thing i really dislike were the constant references. Like a few are fun, but when half of all sentences are references i start thinking that the writers don't know how to write dialogue.
After watching the movie, I've noticed how hard the movie is trying convince the audience that the two main leads are "besties"/ride or die duo. I didn't really see their relationship in that way at all. To me, they radiate coworker/classmates vibe.
One thing I'd love to see an analysis on when it comes out is The School For Good and Evil! It is based on a book series for around middle school to high school aged people (12-18 years old I'd say) though anyone older can still enjoy it, in my opinion. The basic premise is two girls with a strained relationship live in a small town in the woods. Agatha is a loner, she doesn't care about her appearance and prefers deeper conversations. She can be seen as a town paria because of her mother, and the fact they run/live on the graveyard. Sophie is quite the opposite, being fashionable, girly, and obsessed with the rumors of a school where normal people become fairytale princesses. Sophie desperately wants to go to this school, while Agatha is disinterested. One fateful night, both girls get captured and are sent to the School for Good and Evil. They get whisked away on these demonic birds where they are dropped into the moats of the two castles, however, things are not according to Sophie or Agatha's plans. Sophie, thinking she was going to be a princess, gets dropped into the School For Evil, and Agatha, thinking she was going to die, gets dropped into the School For Good. Throughout the first book, Sophie tries to get to the School For Good, thinking her placement was a mistake, while Agatha tries to get to Sophie so they can both return to their homes in the village. I love these books for a couple reasons, and I am excited to see if they achieve these things in the show. 1. These books subvert stereotypes. Agatha, who has greasy hair and wears black clogs, is seen as the epitome of good. She excels in her classes, but she does not care about the stereotypical princessy things. Sophie, who does, gets put into the School For Evil, where everyone is focused on revenge and does not take care of their appearance. Throughout the book, Agatha tries to teach the Evers (the kids in the school for good) how to care about personality, and things beyond the surface, while Sophie tries to show the Nevers (the evil kids) how to be confident and fashionable. 2. Strong female friendships. While Agatha and Sophie's relationship starts out strained, as Agatha pities Sophie and vice versa, over the series they truly become a force to be reckoned with. They never stop caring about one another in their own ways. Additionally, some Never characters, also have strong female friendships, which I think lacks in modern-day TV. The relationship between Sophie and her roommates, Dot, Hester, and Anadil, is truly fascinating. 3. CHARACTER GROWTH. Agatha learns that caring about your appearance doesn't automatically make you shallow over the course of the series, and also learns to accept change. Tedros, our main love interest, learns to be less spoiled and becomes selfless over the series. Last but not least, SOPHIE. Her character growth is TRULY incredible. She maintains her fashionable style and confidence, but she becomes more self-assured and less insecure, becoming smarter and calculated instead of impulsive. She learns to love herself, and that she doesn't need a prince to be happy. Sophie's character arc is one of the best I have ever seen. The best part is she does not give up her femininity in the process. She is seen as powerful and strong while also wearing cute heels. One major change the movie has made is making Agatha a person of color, and I am also super excited by this. I personally do not think that in fantasy TV we have a lot of POC characters that are seen as desirable. Agatha is seen as purely good, as lovable, she gets a love interest and gets to be happy at times too-- and I think that it is amazing that POC girls can look up to Agatha and see themselves in her. Agatha is a HUGE character in the story and gets a bunch of screen time as well. I think this is a big step in the right direction in terms of representation. Finally, the cast. Our main characters, Sophie and Agatha, are being played by Sophie Anne Caruso and Sofia Wylie respectively. I am so excited because of the work I have seen these two people do. Sophie Anne Caruso originated Lydia Deetz in Beetlejuice on Broadway and was fantastic. Sofia Wylie has done a bunch of projects, most notably on Andi Mack in her role as Buffy (I believe). Additionally, Charlize Theaton, Kit Young, Michelle Yeoh, and Kerry Washington (among others) are cast in this movie. All notable, incredible names. This movie has twists, good characters, and a good message. In the end, it is their friendship that saves each other. So yeah, sorry for the extremely long post, thank you to anyone who read this. I am just super passionate about this series and I want it to have the fair analysis it deserves.
Your virtue signaling fails when you do the racist tack of lumping together everyone who isn't white under "POC," and then use "POC" as a synonym for "black." It's erasure bc of race. Asian girls, Indian girls, indigenous girls, Latino girls are not going to look at Sofia Wylie and think "I feel so represented [bc my entire self-image depends on having fictional characters with my skin color]" any more than white ones do. Black girls might like her for that reason, but others won't. There's no reason a Chinese girl will feel represented by her, so stop acting like all POC girls will feel represented by her and see themselves in her. The only reason they would is if they're incredibly racist and identify with any character who isn't white BECUZ they're not white. Stop treating the world like there's only black and white, and stop parroting the cliched diversity lines without ever thinking about them.
The ending makes sense. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. I think both characters would rather have that chaotic duo than be constantly on the look out for when the other person wants to ‘do revenge’. The only part that worries me is that being a Netflix show, this could also be a set up for a sequel. But I really hope not.
i appreciate that they did a twist and i think they did it well, but also the movie is 2 hours long and halfway through they've already taken revenge on 1/2 of their targets, so i always felt like something unexpected is gonna happen and the twist didn't really catch me by surprise. also eleanor felt iffy to me from the beginning, but idk if that's actually good storytelling or not

This is a crazy movie. We don't get to see a lot of coming of age revenge films in this day and age. Both Drea Torres and Nora Cutler have calculated strategies in mind. As a matter of fact, both Drea and Nora could pass off as best friends with similar intentions. One is much more ruthless and unforgiving than the other. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is a phenomenal director. Based on articles I've read, this movie borrows real life snippets from the director's personal experiences while still in high school. She (Jennifer) said that she was quite the rebellious one at her school. In other words, she's defiant of any rigid rules that th school has imposed. Overall, Do Revenge seems like a must watch. It may be a little triggering for some audiences due to its excessive drug usage and foul language, but it's still worth giving the chance, either way. We all appreciate this in depth and thorough analysis video.
I think the ending worked for me because they both are horrible people. What she did to Eleanor can in fact detroy a life, people kill themselves for things like that, and Eleanor kind of tried to kill her, which is worse of course, but is it? What I mean is it's not a competition to see who's a worse person, Drea framed someone for drug posesion and that's what Eleanor threathened to do so they are not so different. I don't think morals in this case can be categorized, they are both in the wrong but Eleanor is a little crazier (with the crash thing). What I mean is -- they both are bad people and teaming up to end another person that is also a bad person after all Eleanor did to Drea (she kinda already got her revenge) it just cements that they are both bad but so is him. Also, I know people in real life who would forgive worst things believe me.
When you first described the movie I was like "sounds fun, might watch it" and the more you described it, the more I physically cringed and ended up deciding to not touch it with a 10 foot pole. And the clips... Oh god. Thanks for saving 2 hours of my time

Agreed! I think that sometimes people can have blindspots when a piece of media isn't really ~for~ them. No queer woman watched this movie and thought that Eleanor was a truly evil villain who needed to be destroyed, and I doubt many straight women felt that way either. When it comes to character writing, people taking their hurt out on each other and people hurting each other for personal gain are entirely different things. Eleanor is not evil, she's manipulative. Max is evil, and we've known that from the jump. It's not like he was slotted in as a villain at the last minute, he literally was one for the whole ass movie!!!

the ending and making the fratboy rich dude the final villain only comes out of left field if you don't take into consideration that eleanor and drea bonded a shit ton before that happened tho? like it was pretty obvious to me because otherwise that whole plotline with drea's ex would've been so empty. i liked the movie a lot i think it made total sense and i loved where it went, it could've had better pacing and exposition and the only thing i really had an issue with is the rushed romantic conclusions tbh i think it makes even less sense for drea to treat both situations the exact same because they're completely different circumstances. her ex leaked her sex tape unprovoked and it was a betrayal that came out of left field and while eleanor also betrayed her out of nowhere its also her fault. everything eleanor did to drea was a result of what *she* did to *her* and u can literally see drea be so fucking appalled at the fact someone did that to eleanor when they first met. its clear that she's capable of feeling actual human emotions and you even see her cry and feel heartbroken when she found out that basically nothing about her relationship with the white dude was real and that he's been cheating on her forever. reminder that what he did caused her to lose basically everything she valued in one fell swoop and drea would've been likelier to latch very closely onto someone who understands her and not want to be abandoned and betrayed AGAIN. she thought her and eleanor were the same in the sense they've both been hurt and could bond over it and help each other out thats the whole thing!! idk if it made any sense but like pay attention to the way the characters work with their emotions more and maybe you'll actually get that they make complete sense. i like that drea and eleanor are not some one note character and feel more human with their writing like that was so real???
Other people have made good points that I agree with about the reconciliation ending. I support it. I don't think it was a cop-out. Drea and Eleanor found that they shared some of their worst qualities, also some of their most joyous and vulnerable moments, and some of their best qualities. The bond they forged, though initiated under false pretenses, was strong and very real. The moments when they took care of each other, empathized with each other, cried with each other ended up meaning more to them than the wrongs they had done. Also one big difference between the two of them and the asshole ex is that Drea and Eleanor, while both manipulative and cunning (and okay, chaotic as fuck,) both felt remorse for things they'd done to the other, and to other people. Douchebag ex felt zero remorse. And while he's kind of a caricature of a certain type of person, he's still way too familiar, particularly to women, and way too reprehensible to not end up as the main villain and object of revenge.
I was enjoying this movie and was prepared to recommend it to a bunch of people, and then they made a whole thing of Max's Star of David necklace, visually, at the peak of his villainy. I'm Jewish and this made me extremely uncomfortable. I've been disappointed that no one but Jewish outlets have bothered pointing out the blatant stereotyping. I really enjoyed this movie, it gave off kitschy fun vibes. For me, the most memorable parts are anything with Sophie, and when the two main characters call out SMG greatness. Oh and the lizard taking the place of the early 2000s little dog lol
I think the main theme of the movie is forgiveness and the gray space that exists in between years of our lives. Drea grows from the mean child she was, And Eleanor saw that and started to feel less than stellar about her plans, and Drea tries to double down on her calculations at the end, only to realize they’ve both grown a bit too. That’s probably more the reason for the way it ended.
Got bored and didn't finish it. I though up the twist while I was watching it but didn't think the writers would have the balls to do it but learning that they did but fumbled the ending, makes me Impressed and Disappointed at the same time

I don't think her ex being the villain was a cheap switcharoo. A big part of Drea's character was that he leaked her nudes and no one believes her because they see him as a perfect angel. The entire movie was about her plotting his downfall. I agree that the girls made up way too easily tho. It would've made sense for them to become bitter allies, not friends.

@@nightmare-fuel i'm only a quarter black but dry skin (eczema, dermatitis, dry scalp) runs in the family and tea tree has basc saved my life... the _smell_ of it isn't my favourite though and contrasts with my usual vanilla/coconut. it's really strong, but maybe i should change brands? it's a good treatment but i usually use different shampoo throughout the week and save the tea tree for more occasional use. use it a lot more during winter too haha.

Also the line drawing has more to do with where it seems reasonable for the characters to draw the line, since no one here thinks anything that these girls did is actually acceptable. We’re just saying that if you’re going to hold a grudge over nothing else, it seems like attempted murder would be the one.

If she did earlier in the car, I think it would’ve been a different story, but she wanted to help get back at Clarissa for Eleanor at least and bad about it at the end at least.
I couldn't believe that I guessed the "twist" right away. One clue to the major twist is Eleanor's scream in the car while driving Drea home. Upon a second viewing, it's obvious that she's frustrated over Drea not being able to tell that the story is about her, nor recognise her own culpability in outing Eleanor.

I read online that Camila Mendes announced that Do Revenge would be the last role she was doing as a high schooler, and I'm glad for her that she's taking this step. Not that she can't pull off the role, but at 28, still being stuck in the casting category of teenager must be exhausting in so many different ways, and we all know how rampant the practice of casting people in their late 20's as teens is in Hollywood.

To me, the whole movie is NOT about The rivalry between the two, but their friendship. It was never about how they would destroy each other, but how they ultimately find comfort in each other BECAUSE they wanted to destroy each other. Like Eleanor said that she was so close to forgiving Drea because they were actually becoming friends. Despite years of hate and resentment, despite the thorough planning, despite everything, Eleanor was ready to forgive. Why wouldn't she do it again? As Drea then says, the time spent with Eleanor was the happiest she has been in so long (if I remember the dialogue correctly), so why wouldn't she give this another chance? They have found closeness despite the hate or perhaps because of all the hate.
It perfectly encaptulates the complex friendship of teenager girls, who, from a young age, are taught to compete with each other. Who is the prettiest, who gets the boy, all that stuff. The stereotype of girls being two faced, acting all friendly with another girl just to talk shit behind her back is a bad stereotype, yes, but not completely unfounded. Friendships between teenage girls are toxic and wild and full of condratictions. They are fueled with competitiveness and jealousy, but also a deep rooted yearning for love. This struggle between what society expects from young girls (to seek perfection and be better than other women) vs the inherent human need for companionship. I can't count how many times I had fought with my friends back then, how many times they had fought, but ultimately, we always made up. We cried about it sometimes, just to fight again a few weeks later. Teenage girls hate each other, but at the same time, they love each other just as much. There is comfort in the chaos and that is what the movie is about.
I hope I explained my thoughts well. It's a bit rambly. Also, I wanna add that of course this isn't everyones experience, but it is a very common one, from what I've seen. Not just in my teenage years, but in online discussions too.

Yeah. I didn't really have friends during the bulk of my teenage years, just people I was friendly with when we were in the same room, but in my preteen years, I didn't like my friends and they didn't like me. So much of our friendships were just a facade in order to feel loved and accepted.
yes!!! and i love the fact that they came together to bring max, the symbol of patriarchy and all other hierarchies, down, and it's AFTER that they became actual friends? what eleanor does to drea is pretty unforgivable, especially with the power and money she has, but i think their dynamic mirrors a lot of teenage girls' friendships with each other. i find the toxic competitiveness and jealousy to be mostly a symptom of patriarchal values, so i think it was nice this was the note they ended on.
Genuinely surprised by how much I liked this movie. The only reason I watched this is because of the revenge plot which is my guilty pleasure and came away very happy with what I saw. Definitely had some issues but overall a very enjoyable experience for me.

I think Drea forgiving Eleanor makes perfect sense because she realizes that she did to Eleanor the same that Max did to her. She absolutely destroyed someone who trusted her for absolutely no reason
Makes sense? Yes. But it’s not about that. It’s building a great story and a great twist only to not see that twist out and to go with the easy, boring, nice ending. Kinda ruined everything they were building.
I think the writer went all in on that twist, so there was nothing left in the tank for the follow up. To be fair, that scene where Drea tells Eleanor before the party "I created you, I can destroy you" and then proceeds to do just that by reminding everyone how she got her "nose-y" nickname *is* the stand off, weak tho it may be. The movie already overstays its welcome a bit and the twist doesn't happen until an hour and half in - they just didn't have the time to play out the Drea vs. Eleanor battle properly.
To me, the whole point was that the battle between them did not matter. Drea couldn't hurt Eleanor like that without feeling remorse because she had started to realize the damage she left in her wake. If wouldn't feel the same to hurt someone who had been hurt and was lashing out because of it. That's why taking out the asshole rich boy was so satisfying. By contrast, he had no reason to be the biggest prick in Miami. Drea became that way to adapt to what she felt she needed to survive. Eleanor was a victim of Drea's who wanted to hurt her for real heinous acts but that subsided as she started to understand Drea better. Homeboy had no harsh upbringing, no one had ever wronged him. He was a spoiled, entitled sociopath who did everything to control others just because he could and played the victim over imagined sleights.
It subsided?? WHEN?! Eleanor was still manipulating Drea right up until Drea exposed her as "Nosey". Drea seems to have a conscience because she immediately followed Eleanor to make sure she was alright! Eleanor had already gotten close to Drea BEFORE she went all psycho on her & threatened to frame her mom for stealing drugs & then hit Drea with her car! She even held her & comforted her. That's cold. She was still playing head games with her when she visited her in the hospital. She scared me in that kitchen scene! (Kudos to Maya Hawke for being terrifying. I honestly didn't know WHAT she was going to do!) So how can you say it subsided as she got to know Drea?! It didn't subside until after Drea exposed her nose job! @DonnaBrooks Eleanor WAS in fact going to drop her plan as she a) got to know Drea and thought they were becoming friends. It was only AFTER Drea callously forgot Eleanor's birthday after being told A DAY BEFORE that she decided to execute the rest of her plan and expand it to the entire senior class. Yes, she was manipulating Drea into committing heinous acts of cruelty (not that Drea wouldn't have done something herself), but the moments that they connected like when Drea finds out that Max was always cheating on her (she was lucky not to catch something from that manho-ing asshole) were genuine and showed her that Drea was a cunt of a human being but more complex and deserving of at least some sympathy.
This film was a hit for sure! The twists were refreshing and an overall fun watch. I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed it
Agreed, it was one of the most enjoyable teen movies I've seen in a while, and although some aspects were a little ludcrious, I had a great time watching overall.
I think it was crazy in just the right way, proper amount of camp and even though the twist is obvious you can understand how the resolution lands well. They are psycho soulmates and there’s something so nice about a friendship where that shitty sloppy part of you doesn’t have to be hidden, is it borderline toxic kinda sorta but reciprocity is important in both affection and atonement.

This movie pulls scenes from past iconic teen movies and the impact it leaves, gives the audience with a feel of nostalgia, and they were placed in such perfect moments.
Precisely, the soundtrack and references were gloriously 90's, and I love how they casted Sarah Michelle Gellar as the Principal, arguably as a shout out to her role as a schemer in "Cruel Intentions", AKA the best teen revenge movie ever made!
I loved unhinged Sophie Turner. I want a cameo from her in every high school Netflix movie now 😂

Fully disagree about the ending of the movie being a "cope-out" or whatever. This movie is a great homage to 2000s teen movies and I believe that they nailed the conflict and conclusion. Eleanor and Drea were both pretty similar in the end, they found comfort in eachother and mutually decided that their friendship was worth much more than a "revenge" against eachother meanwhile they've grown so attached. This ending was to be expected and it reminds of Mean Girls (2004) when all the girls of the school admitted that they have all at one point or another said shit behind a friend's back, thus ending in all of them apologizing one by one.
Do Revenge is a great movie. Even a modern classic in my opinion, EASILY overshadowing all the other stupid teenage shit netflix has made (kissing booth, tall girl, etc.)
Also them battling out at the end would have left them empty and hollow, by the end, like their heart was not in it. at the end they were kinda looking for an out. I mean Eleanor even said herself that she came close to calling the whole thing off a they wee actually becoming friends.

i kinda loved the idea of performative wokeness being used as a main villain. also this movie was honestly one of my favorites. it was fun. i wasn’t expecting much, and tbh i don’t think you need to. it reminded me of the insanity that is heathers but without the murder, and felt like a love letter to classic teen movies. it also used gen z slang in a way that felt more natural to me. overall it’s a 10/10, something you can watch and laugh every now and then and walk away singing “everyone is dumb” :”)

This movie was crazy, chaotic, and weird but I enjoyed every minute of it! The plot, the story telling style, the costumes. Everything about it came together perfectly. Finally a modern teen movie that can maybe stand the test of time. We haven’t had that in so long.
Also; I believe that I read somewhere that Cami won’t be playing teenagers anymore after the last season of Riverdale and I’m really excited to see what she’ll do next!
In defense of the ending, the
reason why it worked really well for me is because the movie chose to value female friendship over female rivalry/hatred. This was important for me because often times in movies done from the perspective of teenage girls such a huge part of the movie revolves around girls being jealous of each other/hating each other/trying to destroy each other to the point where it feels like this narrative choice has almost become a cliche itself, especially given that so many movies don’t do the best job at addressing the internalized misogyny that a lot of young girls have to grapple with. But I do feel like this movie was able to show some of that and indirectly address it without directly telling the audience that’s what it was doing and with the ending they were able to show how inspite of all the toxicity that can come with young female friendship as long as you can own up to your shit and learn to forgive each other than you can find a connection that’s on the level of finding a “soulmate” and that can be a very beautiful thing worth fighting to keep.
Freinds like these, are a hazard road… but if you can miraculously cross it, by all means congratulations… especially in this day and age

I liked the ending. I've always found it more satisfying when the villain and protagonist ultimately join forces against a common enemy, and Drea's ex is established as an enemy to all women from the moment he leaked the video. His crimes were driven by his power, selfishness, and pure evil, whereas Eleanor's were a reaction to having been wronged, which is somewhat justified. So after the twist, there were two villains, but only one of them was fundamentally irredeemable. Besides, Camila and Maya are too cute of a duo to fr break apart

i think what the movie needed was ONE more genuine non revenge related bonding moment between the two. then it would've been way more convincing that the girls really did want to reconcile as friends at the end rather than fight it out. the movie moves so fast that you don't realize, oh yeah they've technically spent the entire year together bonding and scheming. that being said, i was still pretty invested in their friendship by the end. i definitely liked this take down the shitty ex ending more than a hypothetical pit the two crazy girls against each other ending.

I honestly kind of liked that the lovers' lines were kind of a side-story and not rooted in the main story. I understand why it can be bothering, but I'm glad to have a good teen movie where the love stories take a back seat. They may not seem necessary at first glance, but I think the writers went with that to avoid a will they/won't they between Drea and Eleanor and focus on an enemies to friends and revenge plot rather than make this a potential enemies to lovers.
While I agree that Drea's guy is a bit bland and forgettable, I thought that Eleanor's gal was at least a bit fleshed out. She has somewhat of a backstory (as much as a side character can have in a movie of this length), and Talia managed to make her character instantly likeable.

I think that the very low expectations that we have for Netflix originals heavily contributed to the overall hype this movie got. It was fun and different, but yeah some people really portray it as some sort of cinematic masterpiece and I truly believe that it's because we DID NOT see it coming since the last movies and series in the genre have been garbage and utterly disappointing. I myself have been pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it and would actually rewatch it and still appreciate it.
I actually personally felt Maya Hawke’s performance was really memorable lol I think she gets every stage of Eleanor’s character (from unassuming to dorky to villain) quite well while still staying consistent within it. I didn’t think as much of it at first but after the reveal I thought she was deliciously evil enough while still being regretful especially at the party
I feel like by the end, the writers were too conflicted with that they wanted to do with the characters. The chemistry between the two leads is obviously something any writer would want to take advantage of, but THEY SET UP SUCH AN EPIC RIVALRY. It was either take advantage of the set up they’ve put together through skill, and sacrifice a natural chemistry that could absolutely help a movie, or sacrifice this epic storyline they’ve put together for a chemistry they’ll ultimately never committed to. Kind of sad.
I kept thinking that Camila Mendes was just doing Veronica Lodge, but correctly. And that's weird, right? Because Drea is a poor scholarship student, and Veronica is wealthy, and... probably they have other traits that contrast but I can't remember anything about Veronica Lodge. But Drea works because all the Veronica mannerisms and attitudes and wokeisms have a reason to exist in Drea. It's part of a coherent arc with consistent motivations and valid commentary on the hypocrisies of the whole girlboss aesthetic. Veronica just felt like the writers were playing girlboss madlibs.
Also Veronica's performative wokeness was SO clunky that it was incredibly--as Drea would say-- CRINGE.
I’m a bit surprised with how much I enjoyed this movie, because apart from a few exceptions, I seldom enjoy Netflix originals. But this movie was just so delightfully unhinged and over the top and understands how to pay homage to iconic teen movies (Clueless, Cruel Intentions, Mean Girls, Ten Things I Hate About You etc) in the perfect way, that I was immediately drawn in upon watching it.
The cast is just perfect (Cami, Maya AND the iconic Sarah Michelle Gellar , and let’s not forget Sophie Turner‘s cameo) and the entire vibe of this movie is just so great - like Dylan said in the video, this movie wholeheartedly embraces its own stupidity, and it really works.
Is it perfect? Definitely not. Is the dialogue pretty cringe at times? Sure. But this movie was so entertaining, I’ll let it pass. Really hoping to see more Netflix originals with this vibe.

To understand why they became besties at the end, you have to understand the insanity and obsession of teenage girl best-friendship. It comes just shy (or sometimes, smack in the middle) of a folie de deux.
I think Sophie Turner's character had some use outside of being batshit insane. We got to see how revenge actually had devastating effects and when I learned of the end, I felt rlly bad for her.
I thought it was quite good! Though the end baddie reveal felt like a real cop-out. Kinda robbed the 2 main characters of any real agency or need to deal with their own character flaws
I disagree with your opinion about how it should've ended. the final confrontation couldn't be between D and Eleanor because are we forgetting that the whole thing that started the mess in the first place was the tape? The guy needed to be punished for that so him getting what he deserves was not a bad ending. I do agree that both girls shoulnt have been besties by the end but d did ruin elenor's life. Outing her as a predator I'd seriously messed up. Eleanor went overboard with her plan but it's not like d was innocent. D and elenor having a typical mean girl face off would have been super predictable.

It would have been better with a more Death Becomes Her style ending. Have them do such horrible stuff to each other, and have such dirt on each other, that they're left no choice but a bitter future of being toxic co-dependent frenemies because as bad as things are it still serves their shared deepest desire, social status.
I liked the ending but I definitely the Death Becomes Her opportunity here. It might be silly but I was happy to have these two brilliant, unhinged, passionate women choose each other instead of destroying each other.
I don't think they could have made the ending with Drea defeating Eleanor. That sends the message that she bullied Eleanor as a kid, and she's a hero for beating her as a teen when she wanted payback.
But likewise, having Eleanor win sends the message that it's good to get revenge on your preteen bullies even though they are humans too who also have been wronged by others, and no consequences will come from leaking someone's sextape.
I think they needed to come together at the end to defeat the problem guy, but they should have just reached an understanding with each other but not become friends. She made Drea pay already, and while what Drea did as a kid was awful and doesn't necessarily need to be forgiven, she was also a stupid kid. She's still not the best person as a teen, but she has grown and realizes what an awful thing Eleanor lived through, and if she wasn't in the situation of having to worry about her mother, would probably show extreme remorse for her actions as a kid if Eleanor had confronted her about it without engaging in the villainy. End with them reaching an understanding that they wronged each other, but that the vicious cycle of revenge isn't worth it, so they will move past it and accept that they both are flawed people who want to work on themselves in the future.

I’ve only ever seen camilla in a few episodes of riverdale that I watched with a friend so I was kind of surprised how good she is.
Also I loved Sophie turner as Erica.
I loved that this movie knew how to give little nods to classic rom coms and cult classics whilst keeping its own distinct identity and not falling into the trap of just copying them.
I thought like Sophie’s character (Erica) was there in order to be an early example of the lengths Drea will go to for revenge as well as revealing to Eleanor that Drea is still sort of the mean person she thinks and as a means for Eleanor to gain Drea’s trust by throwing Erica under the bus and inspire Eleanor to frame Drea’s mom for drugs by taking a page from Drea’s book which she’s been doing all along. So it shows in hindsight that both Drea and Eleanor will use others as collateral to get what they wan
Turner's character is in the movie because she's an early demonstration of Drea's ability to dish out revenge plots. She's a speedbump for the lead character in the early stage of the plot.
This movie would’ve been so much better if it leaned into its darker side a bit more. Like when Drea said they’ll kill Max and they ACTUALLY do it or if Eleanor wanted revenge on Drea by taking her out. I love the campiness of this film but if it was a pastel teen slasher I would’ve been on the floor
This movie was so much fun and definitely set me on a track to watch all things camp. The vibes are immaculate.
I also loved the scene that Eleanor wiped her lipstick of with her hand after all what she'd had done, referenced to the painting in one of the girl's room's.
I have to be honest, I agree with you on almost every part. Except for the ending.
I do very much find it- endearing may be the right word?- that those two maniacs of teen girls manage to realise that in the end there was no winner in the game they were playing.
It does feel out of left field but I kinda think it was fitting for the movie a little. They are fighting to death one moment, making up and going for the throat of the Max guy the next.
Also it's sort of brilliant in strange way that Drea needed to lean in to her worst impulses to gain a highground... only to realize winning makes her feel worse. And Elenor needed that to realize even after all that scheaming and planning she is not untouchable. I think the pacing was a little off, they should have let the emotions of that argument settle a little.
Also, yeah I get seeing the villain be "a man" can be pretty annoying but 1. He was a fantastic villain. The guy had so much fun embodying the soft boi gone wrong and 2. I feel like if the movie finale would be an epic showdown between two girls it would feel worse. Because no neither Elly nor Drea are heartless maniacs. They are maniacs ofcourse, but not heartless and pitting them against each other feels... meanspirited in some way. I respect the movie for doing the smart thing and not going the "taming if the shrew" way of humbling the bitches, but them realizing all that scheaming and anger could actually be used more productively by targeting it at people who are truly profiting from the infighting (Max doing the "Cis hetero men championging" thing couldn't be more on the nose in showing he is ment to represent opressors weaponizing performative activism to prop themselves up even more.")
Max was always the main villain and I am glad he is not allowed to get away with his shit.

There were two scenes that hinted Eleanor wasn’t who she said she was. One was the scene where Eleanor and Carissa interacted during the school assembly. Carissa was acting way too nice to a girl whose life she supposedly ruined, which implied we didn’t get the full story from Eleanor. The other scene was when Eleanor was comforting Drea in bed after exposing that her ex was cheating on her. Drea said that her and Eleanor were a lot alike, and Eleanor agreed with her but in a way that implied there was more to what she was saying.
and when we first get introduced to Eleanor, her denim jacket has "Nora" embroidered on it and it's completely visible to the camera

And I actually feel like the twist wasn’t that surprising… I mean, I did not predict Drea being the girl that had outed and humiliated Eleanor, but I feel like from the moment that Eleanor and Drea first interact, you can immediately tell that Eleanor isn’t who she’s saying she is. I feel like there were so many little moments, like the scream in the car, or the many times that Eleanor had this ‚deep in thought‘ look on her face after Drea said something (especially the makeover scene where they’re standing in front of the mirror where Drea says that Narcissists are too busy thinking about themselves, you can see Eleanor looking to the side, with this thoughtful and questioning expression on her face). Idk, I just got the feeling that she wasn’t exactly who she said she was from the beginning

As a teenage girl I can understand why she hates the boyfriend over elanor more. You can get hit by a car and heal in a couple of months. That video will be on the internet forever and Andrea's whole life is based on living a "better" life. The video is going to effect her relationships, her job prospects, if she gets into Yale. Not even to mention how violating it would feel to have everyone you know look at your most vulnerable and to know people you don't even know looking at it without your consent.

As an homage to teen movies of the 90s and 00s (oh the memories), the ending worked. The movie is performative - but very deliberately so. Will probably watch again now and again. It was fun.
Sometimes we need a bit of nostalgia to keep us somewhat grounded in the past.. a least for a little while, what with the world being on “fire”

I guessed the twist from the car scene between Drea and Elenor. I thought that it was odd that they showed Drea's backstory for the revenge, but not for our second protagonist, so I was waiting for Maya Hawke to reveal herself by the 3rd act. I was surprised at how much I liked the movie. Though I have some issues with it, I'd still watch this over Mean Girls any day.
I got the twist right away, like on the first bathroom scene, and spent the rest of the movie gaslighting myself into thinking I was being paranoid because I wanted them to be besties so bad, so when it got revealed I was so disappointed... but in the end, I liked how they are fucked up soulmates, love that very niche trope.
The one thing i really dislike were the constant references. Like a few are fun, but when half of all sentences are references i start thinking that the writers don't know how to write dialogue.
After watching the movie, I've noticed how hard the movie is trying convince the audience that the two main leads are "besties"/ride or die duo. I didn't really see their relationship in that way at all. To me, they radiate coworker/classmates vibe.
One thing I'd love to see an analysis on when it comes out is The School For Good and Evil!
It is based on a book series for around middle school to high school aged people (12-18 years old I'd say) though anyone older can still enjoy it, in my opinion.
The basic premise is two girls with a strained relationship live in a small town in the woods. Agatha is a loner, she doesn't care about her appearance and prefers deeper conversations. She can be seen as a town paria because of her mother, and the fact they run/live on the graveyard. Sophie is quite the opposite, being fashionable, girly, and obsessed with the rumors of a school where normal people become fairytale princesses. Sophie desperately wants to go to this school, while Agatha is disinterested. One fateful night, both girls get captured and are sent to the School for Good and Evil. They get whisked away on these demonic birds where they are dropped into the moats of the two castles, however, things are not according to Sophie or Agatha's plans. Sophie, thinking she was going to be a princess, gets dropped into the School For Evil, and Agatha, thinking she was going to die, gets dropped into the School For Good. Throughout the first book, Sophie tries to get to the School For Good, thinking her placement was a mistake, while Agatha tries to get to Sophie so they can both return to their homes in the village.
I love these books for a couple reasons, and I am excited to see if they achieve these things in the show.
1. These books subvert stereotypes. Agatha, who has greasy hair and wears black clogs, is seen as the epitome of good. She excels in her classes, but she does not care about the stereotypical princessy things. Sophie, who does, gets put into the School For Evil, where everyone is focused on revenge and does not take care of their appearance. Throughout the book, Agatha tries to teach the Evers (the kids in the school for good) how to care about personality, and things beyond the surface, while Sophie tries to show the Nevers (the evil kids) how to be confident and fashionable.
2. Strong female friendships. While Agatha and Sophie's relationship starts out strained, as Agatha pities Sophie and vice versa, over the series they truly become a force to be reckoned with. They never stop caring about one another in their own ways. Additionally, some Never characters, also have strong female friendships, which I think lacks in modern-day TV. The relationship between Sophie and her roommates, Dot, Hester, and Anadil, is truly fascinating.
3. CHARACTER GROWTH. Agatha learns that caring about your appearance doesn't automatically make you shallow over the course of the series, and also learns to accept change. Tedros, our main love interest, learns to be less spoiled and becomes selfless over the series. Last but not least, SOPHIE. Her character growth is TRULY incredible. She maintains her fashionable style and confidence, but she becomes more self-assured and less insecure, becoming smarter and calculated instead of impulsive. She learns to love herself, and that she doesn't need a prince to be happy. Sophie's character arc is one of the best I have ever seen. The best part is she does not give up her femininity in the process. She is seen as powerful and strong while also wearing cute heels.
One major change the movie has made is making Agatha a person of color, and I am also super excited by this.
I personally do not think that in fantasy TV we have a lot of POC characters that are seen as desirable. Agatha is seen as purely good, as lovable, she gets a love interest and gets to be happy at times too-- and I think that it is amazing that POC girls can look up to Agatha and see themselves in her. Agatha is a HUGE character in the story and gets a bunch of screen time as well. I think this is a big step in the right direction in terms of representation.
Finally, the cast.
Our main characters, Sophie and Agatha, are being played by Sophie Anne Caruso and Sofia Wylie respectively. I am so excited because of the work I have seen these two people do. Sophie Anne Caruso originated Lydia Deetz in Beetlejuice on Broadway and was fantastic. Sofia Wylie has done a bunch of projects, most notably on Andi Mack in her role as Buffy (I believe). Additionally, Charlize Theaton, Kit Young, Michelle Yeoh, and Kerry Washington (among others) are cast in this movie. All notable, incredible names.
This movie has twists, good characters, and a good message. In the end, it is their friendship that saves each other.
So yeah, sorry for the extremely long post, thank you to anyone who read this. I am just super passionate about this series and I want it to have the fair analysis it deserves.
Your virtue signaling fails when you do the racist tack of lumping together everyone who isn't white under "POC," and then use "POC" as a synonym for "black." It's erasure bc of race. Asian girls, Indian girls, indigenous girls, Latino girls are not going to look at Sofia Wylie and think "I feel so represented [bc my entire self-image depends on having fictional characters with my skin color]" any more than white ones do.
Black girls might like her for that reason, but others won't. There's no reason a Chinese girl will feel represented by her, so stop acting like all POC girls will feel represented by her and see themselves in her. The only reason they would is if they're incredibly racist and identify with any character who isn't white BECUZ they're not white.
Stop treating the world like there's only black and white, and stop parroting the cliched diversity lines without ever thinking about them.

The ending makes sense. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. I think both characters would rather have that chaotic duo than be constantly on the look out for when the other person wants to ‘do revenge’.
The only part that worries me is that being a Netflix show, this could also be a set up for a sequel. But I really hope not.
i appreciate that they did a twist and i think they did it well, but also the movie is 2 hours long and halfway through they've already taken revenge on 1/2 of their targets, so i always felt like something unexpected is gonna happen and the twist didn't really catch me by surprise. also eleanor felt iffy to me from the beginning, but idk if that's actually good storytelling or not
The problem was that throughout all the movie Drea never actually cared to be friends with Eleanor in the first place, she was framed as this asshole who was not much better than her peers, so suddenly she going soft with Eleanor was just mehhhh, there’s like a character growth throwed in there, but I call bs. They were never friends

Every time I hear about these "popular netflix movies" it just keeps making me think that no one actually writes these and they just feed movies into an ai and the ai spits something out that you can watch and digest and then forget exists the following day
This is a crazy movie. We don't get to see a lot of coming of age revenge films in this day and age. Both Drea Torres and Nora Cutler have calculated strategies in mind. As a matter of fact, both Drea and Nora could pass off as best friends with similar intentions. One is much more ruthless and unforgiving than the other. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is a phenomenal director. Based on articles I've read, this movie borrows real life snippets from the director's personal experiences while still in high school. She (Jennifer) said that she was quite the rebellious one at her school. In other words, she's defiant of any rigid rules that th school has imposed. Overall, Do Revenge seems like a must watch. It may be a little triggering for some audiences due to its excessive drug usage and foul language, but it's still worth giving the chance, either way. We all appreciate this in depth and thorough analysis video.

I think the ending worked for me because they both are horrible people. What she did to Eleanor can in fact detroy a life, people kill themselves for things like that, and Eleanor kind of tried to kill her, which is worse of course, but is it? What I mean is it's not a competition to see who's a worse person, Drea framed someone for drug posesion and that's what Eleanor threathened to do so they are not so different. I don't think morals in this case can be categorized, they are both in the wrong but Eleanor is a little crazier (with the crash thing).
What I mean is -- they both are bad people and teaming up to end another person that is also a bad person after all Eleanor did to Drea (she kinda already got her revenge) it just cements that they are both bad but so is him.
Also, I know people in real life who would forgive worst things believe me.
When you first described the movie I was like "sounds fun, might watch it" and the more you described it, the more I physically cringed and ended up deciding to not touch it with a 10 foot pole. And the clips... Oh god. Thanks for saving 2 hours of my time
thank you so much I thought I was the only one that thought the ending was super rushed like it was just confusing to me that they were literally having a huge fight and then all of a sudden out of nowhere they made the boyfriend the villain and they are best friends all that to say that it was definitely a nice fun movie.

Agreed! I think that sometimes people can have blindspots when a piece of media isn't really ~for~ them. No queer woman watched this movie and thought that Eleanor was a truly evil villain who needed to be destroyed, and I doubt many straight women felt that way either. When it comes to character writing, people taking their hurt out on each other and people hurting each other for personal gain are entirely different things. Eleanor is not evil, she's manipulative. Max is evil, and we've known that from the jump. It's not like he was slotted in as a villain at the last minute, he literally was one for the whole ass movie!!!

Camila Mendes was in another Netflix original movie a few years ago called Dangerous Lies. It's a thriller with kind of a boring plot but Camila is great and her character isn't a knock-off Veronica Lodge
the ending and making the fratboy rich dude the final villain only comes out of left field if you don't take into consideration that eleanor and drea bonded a shit ton before that happened tho? like it was pretty obvious to me because otherwise that whole plotline with drea's ex would've been so empty. i liked the movie a lot i think it made total sense and i loved where it went, it could've had better pacing and exposition and the only thing i really had an issue with is the rushed romantic conclusions tbh
i think it makes even less sense for drea to treat both situations the exact same because they're completely different circumstances. her ex leaked her sex tape unprovoked and it was a betrayal that came out of left field and while eleanor also betrayed her out of nowhere its also her fault. everything eleanor did to drea was a result of what *she* did to *her* and u can literally see drea be so fucking appalled at the fact someone did that to eleanor when they first met. its clear that she's capable of feeling actual human emotions and you even see her cry and feel heartbroken when she found out that basically nothing about her relationship with the white dude was real and that he's been cheating on her forever. reminder that what he did caused her to lose basically everything she valued in one fell swoop and drea would've been likelier to latch very closely onto someone who understands her and not want to be abandoned and betrayed AGAIN. she thought her and eleanor were the same in the sense they've both been hurt and could bond over it and help each other out thats the whole thing!! idk if it made any sense but like pay attention to the way the characters work with their emotions more and maybe you'll actually get that they make complete sense. i like that drea and eleanor are not some one note character and feel more human with their writing like that was so real???
Other people have made good points that I agree with about the reconciliation ending. I support it. I don't think it was a cop-out.
Drea and Eleanor found that they shared some of their worst qualities, also some of their most joyous and vulnerable moments, and some of their best qualities. The bond they forged, though initiated under false pretenses, was strong and very real. The moments when they took care of each other, empathized with each other, cried with each other ended up meaning more to them than the wrongs they had done.
Also one big difference between the two of them and the asshole ex is that Drea and Eleanor, while both manipulative and cunning (and okay, chaotic as fuck,) both felt remorse for things they'd done to the other, and to other people.
Douchebag ex felt zero remorse. And while he's kind of a caricature of a certain type of person, he's still way too familiar, particularly to women, and way too reprehensible to not end up as the main villain and object of revenge.
If The Kissing Booth gets a trilogy, of course you can expect a sequel for this.
I was enjoying this movie and was prepared to recommend it to a bunch of people, and then they made a whole thing of Max's Star of David necklace, visually, at the peak of his villainy. I'm Jewish and this made me extremely uncomfortable. I've been disappointed that no one but Jewish outlets have bothered pointing out the blatant stereotyping. Rich Jewish manipulator with a dad that has political power. Who in the writing room came up with this idea?

I really enjoyed this movie, it gave off kitschy fun vibes.
For me, the most memorable parts are anything with Sophie, and when the two main characters call out SMG greatness.
Oh and the lizard taking the place of the early 2000s little dog lol
I think the main theme of the movie is forgiveness and the gray space that exists in between years of our lives. Drea grows from the mean child she was, And Eleanor saw that and started to feel less than stellar about her plans, and Drea tries to double down on her calculations at the end, only to realize they’ve both grown a bit too. That’s probably more the reason for the way it ended.

Got bored and didn't finish it. I though up the twist while I was watching it but didn't think the writers would have the balls to do it but learning that they did but fumbled the ending, makes me Impressed and Disappointed at the same time

The movie Climax was entirely centered around the concept of someone drugging a group of people with psychedelics without their consent and that scenario did not turn out great, ha ha

I don't think her ex being the villain was a cheap switcharoo. A big part of Drea's character was that he leaked her nudes and no one believes her because they see him as a perfect angel. The entire movie was about her plotting his downfall. I agree that the girls made up way too easily tho. It would've made sense for them to become bitter allies, not friends.
