I was going to comment that you should clean up all the metal near the rad support before welding, while its still easy to get to, but it looks like you did already. I really hate when i find i didnt plan ahead like that.
I had a 72 XJ and did a SBC engine swap. Had to lower the front suspension because of weight difference in engines. I cut two coil spring rings to accomplish this. It lowered the front just a little over 3 inches. Ride quality did not change. Just had to get an alignment.
Wish you luck. A lot of work. Wouldn't been easier to leave the top where to bonnet sits. Cut around the whole inner fender area. So everything is there for the shocks etc etc

Good info, I was wondering about that.
There is a huge weight difference for sure! Thanks for sharing!
Looking good. I think, if you intend to do more projects, which I hope you do, it might be good to get yourself a plasma cutting table.
Wish you luck. A lot of work. Wouldn't been easier to leave the top where to bonnet sits. Cut around the whole inner fender area. So everything is there for the shocks etc etc
Cut some holes in the new plate so you can weld it to the original frame underneath..like a large plug weld…
make sure to keep the steering geometry as close to original as possible
Did you give up on it??
