    Electronic control of tankless water heater: Use a PID? SSR vs SCR?
    I have an 8KW Atmor tankless water heater that has two switched heating elements. I want to add stable electronic temperature control. But I can't find good information about the different options!
    Seems the PID + SSR MAY have longer switching time, and that MAY reduce heating element life from thermal cycling vs a higher speed SCR. But I am having trouble finding the real answer.

    Are these only to be tested removed off board out of circuit?
    Just documenting how to troubleshoot old pinball machines and 60 of these (mcr106-1 and 2n5060) are on one board alone. I notice 2 already were replaced by seeing different part manufacturers were soldered on.
    If I can check on board and won't mess anything up, do I need to do anything afterwards to close gate, if I understand that right..

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would desolder the gate pin, then test using a DMM set to the diode function between the gate and each leg(Anode/Cathode).

    can you short the gate to the anode and use it as a diode? What is the current flowing through the gate? Is that why your using a resistor and what value did you use.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use an SCR as a diode. The resistor was used to limit gate current, the value wasn't critical. Thanks for watching!

      @@electronicsNmore Thanks for your reply, I seem to remember doing this many years ago. I played around with different value resistors. In my case I had to get under 1000 ohms before the gate fired off and let the SCR pass current. I settled on a 560 ohm resistor. I am building a LiOn battery pack for a Ham Radio. I have 4 batteries in series each series is 3 batteries in parallel. I plan to use 3, 20 amp SCR in series to drop the voltage down to less than 15 volts for the radio. Ken

      hansley maharaj Thank You. The Wavetek-27xt is an excellent DMM for people into electronics. I paid around $125.00 16 years ago. Outside of a few worn traces on the rotary knob that I repaired, a couple burned resistors that was my fault, and a SMD IC which I replaced, the meter has been great. You can buy cheaper versions of my meter without the inductance feature for around $40 on Ebay.

    How do you determine what resister to activate the gate?

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ed Ginsberg Hi Ed. If using an SCR for a 6v to 12V circuit, usually a 200 ohm to 1K ohm resistor will be just fine. You need to look up the data sheet for your SCR. The SCR in this video is a BT151-500R, which has a gate trigger current of around 15mA. If you go to trigger the SCR for a heavier load and you have triggering issues, then lower the gate resistor value until the problem is corrected.
      Thanks.
