Thanks for the tutorial! There is a faster option for your layer mask solution(maybe its already mentioned). Layers accept jepg, bmp and png as masks, you can drag and drop them from the Files explore in Resolume. Unfortunately its not possible to use movie clip, otherwise we could render object buffers in C4D and use them as mask.
These tutorials are fantastic, I was curious if you'd be able to do another going deeper into making the clips (to be mapped) in external software? Thanks for your work.
Po would be great! I am wondering do a projection on a wall with measures 12 cm long by 5 cm tall. So I doubt if I'll have to do the videos in parts, to be distributed in more projectors or do I have to do just a video using only one projector, if this is actually possible using only one projector!
Hi Tom, thanks again for your tuts....don't suppose you might be amiable to sharing some AE project files of your hexagons??? Got a gig this Sat and would love to incorporate them?? Props given of course! No worries either way as I'm working my way (slowly) thru AE...Resolume nailed now!
Hi J. Glad to hear you've got Resolume sorted. It's a big nope to sharing the project files I'm afraid, but have a look at this tutorial on Video Copilot. Follow this and you'll end up with much nicer clips than I'm using here! www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/animated_polygon/
Hi There, Awesome tutorials, been using this same tutorials for over two year already, great results. Just changed my projection surface to something similar to this hexagons, they are even size hexagons. my question is if you have time to answer it, How did you go about the cubes spinning, I tried in cinema 4d by placing the hexagon bg but it warps a lot depending on the position, I'm also trying to make a single cube in cinema 4d then exporting to after effects to copy paste and fit the cubes, but I cannot make the cubes to rotate or fit evenly on cinema, do you have any suggestions or quick explanation on how to get this right. That would be a lo of help, thanks again, for sharing your knowledge.
Hey Victor, good to hear from you. In Cinema, have you tried using a camera in parallel mode [in the object tab, under the projection drop down]? This should make the view nice and flat and give it a 2D look. I find the best setting is to adjust the pitch rotation in the coordinates to -35. Hope that helps, Tom.
Thanks for the tutorial. I have a basic question , How can i take a photo of what i want to map and add it to the software i am using so it becomes easier to map. Is Madmapper better than resolume arena. Thanks for your help
vjfit How would you approach using Resolume with a camera to actively adjust the masks, and changing the shape and position of your content? For example, mapping to a moving object, i.e person.
Hummmm... interesting. I think the simplest answer is probably painstaking choreography. Using robots would give you definite movements and positions: th-cam.com/video/y4ajXJ3nj1Q/w-d-xo.html Or standing perfectly still would do the trick: th-cam.com/video/t0A34u48zsk/w-d-xo.html I'm going to get a Kinect for Christmas, so I might have more idea of how to do something like this in the new year: th-cam.com/video/FnulH8TrZVo/w-d-xo.html Please do let me know if you come up with anything cool.
Great instalment to an already excellent mini-series, thanks Tom. Am a Resolume Arena 4 newbie, using Blender for 3D loops. Not straightforward tho and am wondering if I should take the plunge and acquire Cinema4D and AE? Any views?
Cheer J. Yes, I'm a big fan of C4D -> AE -> Resolume, so I'd say go for it. Maybe take it one program at a time though. It took me a few years to get fully comfortable with AE and I'm just learning C4D now. I suggest getting into AE for the moment, and you can still use the knowledge of Blender to make 3D stuff when you need to. Then, once you're comfortable with AE, start thinking about learning Cinema? This is a great place to start with After Effects: www.videocopilot.net/
vjfit Cheers fella. Now a trial member of Creative Cloud and will spin up AE for a bit. On C4D, which version do u need? They range $600 - $3500! On another note, have u seen this guys work, he loads C4D files with final renders on Creative Commons license - very gracious I thought www.beeple-crap.com/vjclips.php
Hey cheers the tutorial :).I was wondering what the mount is you have used to hang the hexagons from? Going to do something the same for a gig next week. Was looking at attaching them to a wall which was posing problems!
+Jixal There was a bit of an evolution I think... This first go was using a cheap green screen stand and gaffer tape, so that wasn't very sturdy. I came up with a nice solution to create gaps between the hexagons using Lego, but it was still held up using the green screen stand. The final design I used was a lot more rigid, it used a metal truss, perspex hexagons and wire rope to hold it all together. th-cam.com/video/JDy6UI5Nkdo/w-d-xo.html
+Jixal Totes, very heavy and not at all cheap. I got mine as part of an art commission and I've used it for other projects as well so it was defo worth getting it. Something like this one: www.soundlightuk.com/shop/product_images/l/526/Trusslite_Stand__30691_zoom.jpg
Hi I like. your videos man and thus have learned, but can not find the video loops to project. maybe you can recommend me a site where you can find them thanks
Hi, glad the videos are helping you out. I like to make my own clips as you can design them to fit around what you are doing. This is a good place to download free to use footage: www.beeple-crap.com/
Hi there! Super tutorials! Just have one question for you: the panel you are using are simple coroplast or you painted them somehow? would you suggest them for a live gig -talking about quality of projection? T Thanks a Ton!!
+niccolofior Hi Nicco, Cheers! I didn't paint these ones because they are nice and white but when I bought some other ones and there are a little bit see through. I gave them a coat or radiator enamel paint to make them catch the light better. What are you planning on doing?
+vjfit thanks a lot! We are planning a show in a small theatre: a mix with acting, dancing and live music and the projections would be an important part of it! I'll try to aks you another question, you may know the answer.. if we have 2 panels to project on, using a single projector and mapping the two panels would be a bad idea? we are thinking about the fact that the "black" won't be truly dark and maybe would illuminate the rest of the scene (meaning, out of the panels) a bit. Is that a true thing or the light would be so low that is not actually a problem? Thanks again
+niccolofior Sounds cool, you shouldn't have a problem covering two panels from one projector. It really depends on the size of the screens, the projector you're using and the distance between them though. It might be worth looking at getting a second projector to cover the other screen...
a question please, how do you connect resolume to to the projector to be able to see it in the wall because right one am just working with my pc i cant see the results.
at the moment am using a pc bt i can install the software to the laptop but i dont know how to connect the software where with the laptop maybe you can help me do that please.

Curtis Carney Sorry bud, no idea. I'm trying to keep my tuts generally about the mapping side of things and not actually making the clips. There's loads of people on-line that are much more better at that stuff than me.

what did you use to build the prop? What is the material? and where did you get it cut at?
It's Corex, or Coroplast.
It's easy to cut so I did it myself.
Do you know how to link resolume to traktor pro? Can you do a tutorial? Please
Nar, I've not done that myself.
Looks like you can, but it's a bit of a ballache:

Allan Simiyu So you have a laptop and a projector set up, is the laptop sending anything at all to your projector?
Thanks :)
what's software for download ?
