John has been a MUSIC LOVER since he was born. Problem is, he rarely knows or fully grasps the lyrics. Dave, on the other hand, has never heard or rarely overheard the music John chooses to play him, but tends to take lyrics literally, often to comical ends.

This is a real, honest reaction to a song Dave have never consciously heard before and/or listened to with intent. Scenes from an Italian restaurant isn’t too far below the surface but would be good to see him interpret. Another track that I think his interpretation would be interesting and is not one of his massive hits would be Miami 2017.

Doh, here... That's really a great suggestion, Jeff, thanks! Lyrics in that are somewhat up for interpretation.

LOVE LOVE that you guys pointed out the bridge lyrics! You can’t hit it any better. “ I once believed in causes too-I had my pointless point of view-life went on no matter who was wrong or right“ OMFG that is just brilliant…

When I was in high school, a friend could cover that. Billy used both hands to do the 16th notes? (32nd notes?) one-key playing, and while doing it, he'd play the other keys with his other fingers, but my friend taught himself to play the staccato one-key part by alternating his index and middle fingers of his left hand while playing the other part with his right.
I could cover it because my electronic keyboard had a selection where you could just press the key once and hold it down and it'd play those one-key notes. But I was just lazy.

That fast paced riff at the beginning was meant to pay homage to "Wipe Out" by The Safaris.

I recommend you watch this performed LIVE, check out “Live from Long Island “ from 1981, it’s absolutely incredible and the dude was on the top of his game and the band was incredible with Liberty DeVito on the drums

Love this album. Anthony’s song will be a good one. I remember hearing on Sirius that Billy did the whistling as a place gilded and he told his producer that some instrument would play this either a sax flute or whatever. Later on he was talking to the producer and Billy asked what should he use there and the producer said it’s already done. We are going to use the whistling. And it’s perfect. So many great story songs to choose from. I’d suggest maybe Allentown or Goodnight Saigon.

First, I'd like to say that I don't usually watch reaction vids until the end. But just watching and listening to you two go back and forth, I can't not watch! your reactions are the most real I've seen on here. Keep up the banter. There aren sooooo many "rabbit holes" you could go down, and Billy Joel is an awesome one!! Please react to The Entertainer. And then Captain Jack!! Thanks foe your reactions guys!! Looking forward to more! Peace

While it's true about the synth that Robert Moog (pronounced Moe-g, not "Moo-g") built is the MiniMoog Model D and yes, it was monophonic - you are correct that was one of the factors that gave its unique sound. The other fact is that he designed it so as to be easily used live on stage and took many tips from musicians at the time and designed them into the finished instrument. The list of artists that used the Model D in their songs, many of them hits, is very, very long.

I like the cynical lyrics in this song, as for me when I was in my 20's I was the angry young man. Lyrics are subjective but there is some truth here, for me at least. Whenever I went out to the pizza place with my mom as a 4 year old I would get a quarter and I could choose some songs on the juke box. I always chose Billy Joels "Uptown Girl" and Taco's rendition of "Puttin on the Ritz"
Now as far as cynical lyrics are concerned. Another out of left field would be the band "Devo" They used alot of Moog synths and their lyrics were almost cryptic.

at about 6:37--the comment about " hearing keyboard and piano at the same time "--listen to Kansas and Supertramp, you'll get plenty of that. And the piano intro is very Supertrampesque, and the many changes are standard for Kansas. I've always wondered if Billy Joel was listening to Kansas or Supertramp and thought to himself: " Hey, I can do that "

I'll throw Big Man On Mulberry Street into the mix - definitely a Billy Joel b-side, but the lyrics are WIDE open for interpretation. :)
