My great grandad used to build sunderlands during the war! I remember one story that was passed down was that there was a lot of Sunderland hulls in a line with the wings not fitted yet, just floating in a long row, fixed upright by wires. And one day, it was really windy, and the wind broke the wires away and the Sunderland’s rolled over like dominos!! It’s always been such a special plane to me because of my family’s history so thanks for doing a video on it! Love you Phlyyy!

There's a guy in polk county, florida that has (i think) the only Sunderland in the states. It belongs to Kermit Weeks' Fantasy of Flight museum and it's sitting out in the open. He said he wanted to get it in the air again last year but hasn't done anything yet due to Covid. It's pretty sick, though. I hope he can fly it again.

This only has a fraction of the load it could carry in real life too. It could carry depth charges and mines. But it could also apparently carry more internally to be placed on the racks after the first set had dropped. It's stated to carry up to 4,950 of bombs, mines, and depth charges total. Too bad we don't have this in game!

    I actually agree!
Imagine seeing Sunderland's flying about as "pleasure yachts". I know, I know, I'll never be able to buy one but whenever I see a "super yacht" all I think is "expensive ugly plastic box with a motor strapped to it." Money can buy a lot of things but it seems taste and imagination aren't among them.

Great thing is with this plane is that you can easily land it on an airfield. It's front end is so large that there is rarely any risk of damaging a prop or shearing off a wing, and the pilot sits so high as long as you're not going super fast you'll survive it. Repair, reload and then get an in air start as this boat aint got no gear!

Yes my Sir!! Qantas here in Australia & New Zealand had operational Sunderland's in service right up until the early 70s for cargo and light passenger transfers. We also had a lancaster that was based out of an airfield in country New South Wales that used to do supply runs between farms and towns taking essentials like food shopping and basic utilities. This being part due to the fact that here in Australia when you live rural, and I do mean very rural! Your neighbour can be anywhere up to 500 miles from your house. The Lancaster was privately owned and I'm pretty sure from what I know it was purchased by the pilot who flew her in WW2 and sold to a local who started using it as a cargo plane 25 years after the war. Im pretty sure its still running too but don't quote me on that.

There are a couple of S.25s left here in the U.K, but they’re only on static display in museums. Fun fact: I’m from the City of Sunderland, I work at an aircraft museum here, our logo features a Short Sunderland in it for obvious reasons, because well, the museum is here in Sunderland, but yeah, we don’t even have an S.25 on display, ironically, we have a Vulcan that I ocassionally do cockpit tours on and a Canberra, along with numerous Cold War era fighters, including a BAC Lightning and an F/100 Super Sabre, so I guess that makes up for it.

@phlydaily. The Sunderland was flying in New Zealand for many years after the war for the NAC airline, the previous one to Air NZ, I am unsure if it was flying for Aussie Airlines, but it surely was as it was such a versatile aircraft platform. I also believe the aircraft type was used heavily in airline operations around the Pacific Islands primarily being operated by NAC.
And there is a surviving, non airworthy version of the Sunderland in the Museum of Transport and Technology in Auckland.

Bro most Sunderlands were used by military forces around the world well into the 60s for maritime search and rescue. There's not many left because they were used until they were either worn out and scrapped or replaced with later more modern flying boats (eg. Grumman Albatross) or ground based aircraft (eg. Neptune, Avro Shackleton) and scrapped.
Both the British and Germans didn't call it the flying porcupine for nothing.

Phly I get why you would want the Sunderland to island hop. And I admit it is a great choice. But if your dreams can go a bit further in this fantasy, think about the Boeing 314 clipper from the late 30's. Magnificent aircraft and could accommodate more beds, bars, slides, and room to spare for a nursery. Love the channel boss, keep her going.

You may not bet able to get a Sunderland, but there are a good number of Grumman flying boats around for sale in the 200k price range! If demolition ranch can get a tank, you deserve a flying boat!

Phly, instead of the super rare Sunderland, look for a Grumman Albatross. Not quite as large, but still big, cool, and radial powered!

They were used alongside Catalinas after the war by some old branch of Air New Zealand to take people to Samoa and the islands! They're how my grandad ended up in NZ and then of course me :)

I think the " Saunders-Roe Princess" was the closest to a flying yacht, and I would pick something more advanced/modern than a Sunderland for that concept like the H8k, Harbin SH-5, Short Solent, or a Beriev float plane! ... maybe a twin-hull...

Hey Phly... Viking Air in Canada still makes flying boats... as firefighters. dunno how much cabin space you could make by gutting one, and a new CL-515 is apparently ~30 mil USD, but... it's a flying boat. :)

I can see a Sunderland flying low & slow between islands as a flying pleasure yacht in somewhere like the Caribbean or the islands in & around Australia/Indonesia region.
Maybe convert the back so it opens up when on the water, & put a small boat or a jet ski in. Go fishing for big fish like tuna & have a feast in the plane.
