    I think the conundrum is that we can like the concept of a style or aesthetic but it doesn’t fit our innate aesthetic, body type or current phase of life. If it doesn’t spark joy and requires work to make it work I say toss it!!! Your closet looks great!!!!❤

    If you are questioning keeping something you haven't worn - it needs to go.
    If you are not comfortable in something - it needs to go.
    And I need to follow my own advice here. 😂

    Thanks for the closet cleanout motivation!
    Some tricks I use (that don't always work, cause...overthinking, attachment etc.):
    If you wouldn't buy it now and you're debating on keeping it, and you aren't wearing it, it goes.
    If you're not excited about styling it, get rid of it.
    If it's giving you an existential crisis while wearing it, get rid of it!
    The blouses are pretty, but you didn't seem excited about wearing them. If you're not feeling like you in them, and they mentally make you feel worse, why keep them? Mental health is tricky enough without your clothing making you feel bad. Someone else will love them and not feel stifled. Sometimes knowing that I can bring happiness to someone else by getting rid of what doesn't make me happy anymore helps the process.
    Wear things that give you that serotonin/dopamine response. If you put it on and you have that "yaaaaas!!" moment, that's when you keep it. Like, preening in front of the mirror while you wear it, feeling good.
    Some things are gonna be good basics like black pants, so there may not be that excitement level there, and that's ok for those as long as you're happy with them. Same with comfy/cozy stuff. Ditching the black jeans you don't wear but keeping the black trousers you feel good in, is a perfect example.

    • @shellisannes464
      @shellisannes464 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I have to ditto this too Re: those blouses. When they came out I thought of my teachers in the 70s and librarians but I know lots of people went crazy for them. To each their own, but if my black jeans don’t excite me to wear them? They may excite someone else at the Goodwill 🧐😁🤘🏼

    For the mom jeans just wear them if you want to wear them I've been so overwhelmed with how fast the trends have been coming and going I've just stopped following them all together. Not paying attention to trends has also saved me so much more money. 2023 for me is consuming less of everything and not following trends has helped cutting back on that habit so much.

    • @DressMeUpScotty
      @DressMeUpScotty  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree, the trends are too quick. It’s exhausting. 2021 was one of the years with the quickest micro trend cycles and I really got caught up in some for a quick second. I do genuinely never reach for or feel confident in the jeans so I ended up adding them to the yeet pile 😂

  • @cpt_eleanore
    @cpt_eleanore ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I tried for years to wear structured shirts because they looked so cool and effortless on everyone else, until I just finally gave up and realised they’re not for me. A week later I stumbled across a video that backed up what I thought- on many body types they’ll look cool or even casual, but on my body type (which leans more towards flowy curvy stuff looking best) they look constricting and boxy. I don’t think body types should tell you what you can or cannot wear, but understanding them can definitely help you understand why the same clothes item has a different vibe on someone else.

    • @DressMeUpScotty
      @DressMeUpScotty  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I think the body type thing can be a good guideline for a lot of people but can certainly be a rabbit hole. I know quiet a few people that are into the Kibbe body type thing and it’s confusing lol. But I can see how it can be helpful.

  • @jrj5893
    @jrj5893 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I haven't finished the video yet but I think the word you're searching for when you're talking about the blouses is 'stifled.' You don't look like you're happy to be wearing them, and in my opinion, that means that you don't need them. Or that you should vaccum-seal them and stuff them in the attic or storage, and then look at them when you're doing a storage purge.
    Okay, now that I've finished the video, I can definitely say that yes, those blouses should probably go. Comparing them to how excited you were by most of the other stuff you tried on, it's clear that you don't love them any more.
    Cleaning out closets is really overwhelming, so good on you to spread it out to make sure you had the energy to do The Things.The video has definitely made me painfully aware of the fact that I need to get rid of some clothes, too, especially since I have several things that I STILL have not dyed or altered like I had originally planned to do. I just need to accept that I'm probably not going to do anything with these things, and eject them from my home.
    ETA 2 because I forgot and then remembered when I was watching your bloopers short: I am DEFINITELY showing my age when I was really, seriously expecting Eminem's Cleaning Out My Closet to be playing during at least SOME of this.

    • @DressMeUpScotty
      @DressMeUpScotty  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stifled! Yes thank you, that’s exactly the word I was looking for! I think the struggle is definitely that those blouses used to be my style but my life has changed a lot and I’ve changed a lot. I didn’t realize how much I’ve changed until I put them back on. They definitely no longer feel like me.

  • @NeonFrills
    @NeonFrills ปีที่แล้ว +10

    My thoughts are, if something doesn't fit right and you've had it for a long time (like, at least a year) with no plans to alter it, it should go. There will be a perfectly fitting version of that item out there somewhere for you!! The one you have just has to fly free to another person's closet

  • @gooseofspooks2500
    @gooseofspooks2500 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    In a nutshell what makes it easier for me to declutter is to think "Do I feel comfortable in this?" aka do I like how it looks on me, how I feel in it (mentally and physically), does it fit the way I like, do I like the material etc. I also like many styles but I don't feel good and confident in everything so that's helped me find my style in the process. Hope that helps 🌱

    Keep the clothes you feel good in and screw any styles and wear what you like. And I also agree with the other toss what you don't reach for and where you don't feel comfortable. I also had clothes where I thought oh it might work if I wear it with this. Guess what I still never reached for them so it was finally time to let them go. And yes please more closet cleanout videos I love them.

    I also find myself buying/gravitating towards styles I like, but don’t actually wear. As many folks have already mentioned, I’ve been going with if I’m not comfortable in it and I don’t feel cute in it - it goes. You did great work! Spacing it out over several days makes so much sense. ❤

    You did a great job... Closet looks neat and clean.
    If you don't want to get rid of certain items that you currently don't reach out for, but perhaps will wear them in the future... you could store them away in vacuum bags and boxes maybe in the garage or storage room of some sort... the attic or the cellar type of storage area depending on what your house offers.
    That's what I usually do and if in the future I still don't care much for a particular item, then I would give it away.
    Thanks for sharing with us your methods of clothing reorganize 👍🏻💕

    So here’s a REALLY simple rule I go by with closet clean outs.
    1. Do I EVER reach for this item? If no, get rid of, if yes, keep.
    Bonus if:
    If the closet is so jammed that I can’t reach for Jack squat, due to closet panic, thin things down by color, or clothing type.
    You MUST KEEP the checkered and STRI-PED ones they look so good. I love those on you, must rock those tomorrow.

    A curb your enthusiasm reference and a star trek reference within the first minute of the video? I love it here *weeps dramatically* ...here is the thing with my closet. I don't follow any rules people say about "how often I grab for it" because I have some pretty unique pieces that it just doesn't make sense to wear all the time. Therefore my solution is to have a 'dress up' closet (cosplay, weddings, etc) and my real closet. I only get rid of things if they are beyond repair (can't even use for scrap fabric) or they don't fit me anymore and cannot be made to fit me. Nothing wrong with having a huge collection baby! I think you looked great in all those pants. all. those. pants. hahaha

I know they carry a lot of different brands so I may investigate individual brands they carry and not go through them because there are a few brands with the aesthetic I like. 17:45 GIRL!! I know why you are struggling with that tan, polka dot blouse!!
    Everyone and everything falls into four types of energy or “movement”, according to @caroltuttle in her “Dressing Your Truth” series.
    That blouse is a Type 4 energy: very structured, clean, classic. Very little movement, very confining. Which a Type 4 woman would love.
    But you strike me as a Type 3 woman- swift movement, dynamic energy, free-spirited and independent. Trying to put a Type 4 blouse on, EVEN if it is a Type 3 color, it will feel like it is stifling you, confining you, restricting you.
    That is your Beauty Sixth Sense talking to you and telling you that it is no good for your body, that it doesn’t match your moment, that it doesn’t honor your energy movement! 🧡
    Even the fact that you talk about not liking turtlenecks (feeling strangled) is a huge clue about your energy type.
    I hope that helps! Carol Tuttle’s “Dressing Your Truth” system is the ONLY fashion system that involves more than just color- she goes into depth on design lines, fabrication, and more and shows how the movement of things like clothes and jewelry bring out a woman’s (or man’s) true energy and personality.

    • @christiana_mandalynn
      @christiana_mandalynn 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Also at 20:22 you hold up another blouse that you like better and it is similar to the other structured button-down BUT -- it is in that rich, dynamic Type 3 color of rust/terra Cotta, it has more of an ability to let you MOVE around (from what I can see from the way the fabric yields) AND you are drawn to that pointed, VERY angular collar, sharp angles on the collar, which is absolutely Type 3.
      So you innately know what you are drawn to!! 🧡🧡 Take heart! It’s just your Beauty Sixth Sense trying to reconcile what aesthetics you love with your inner energy movement!
