    Thanks for the video. I ordered the drag washers and did the replacement today. My original drag had completely seized. The drag works much better now. The video was good though I could have used a little more description on which assembly washer went where. You did show them but I failed to notice a couple washers during my disassembly and it took me multiple views of your video to figure out where they went. Not sure I ever really understood the warped washers under the star wheel. I was really glad to have your video as a resource; I would never have tried this without it.

      Glad it was helpful! I have some useful info on the warped washer config in the video description, let me know if you have any questions!

    Hey great video but I noticed a couple things.. the tab on the plate goes into the spring mid way along it when it is seated in the slot. Also the white plastic washer that you discarded on the back of the brass drag gear is supposed to be there and is not part of the drag…. Great upgrade. I think I’ll do it when the drags on my reels start losing their range.

      Thanks! Yeah a couple other people noticed the spring as well, looked out of place inside the spring, but turns out it's correct. So far my reels have been performing well without the white washer. Either way, great upgrade like you said. Thanks for watching!

    I agree with what Denise Bister said in the comments - but only because when I opened my reel, that piece was in the middle of the spring, just like it was when you opened it. Haven't seen the schematic from Okuma or Tuna Reels yet, but now I'm very curious. Otherwise this video is A+. Thank you.

      so many things he did wrong on this reel.

  • @OnlyFins86
    @OnlyFins86 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The problem isn't the drag washers,(unless it's a very old model all newer round cold waters have carbon fiber drags) the problem is the shaft gets scarred, so it won't allow the drag plates move on the shaft, the real fix for this is to take a half round small file and lightly file those scarred areas smooth, clean the drag washers and you're good to go. also just put the handle on the shaft when removing the hold plate screw no need for an adjustable wrench. another note is when you are removing the drag stack just flip the shaft and gear over and dump them, they will lay in the correct orientation, so you don't have to take them out individually. also, the spring for the clutch was in the correct position the way you put it back make the clutch engage with a longer handle turn.

    I discovered a feature on these reels that cause the drag issues you mention. Near the reel logo is a toggle button to toggle the clicker mode on or off. Turning it off gives completely smooth drag and complete silence with reeling, turning it on introduces the loud click while reeling and tighter drag.
    In your video you had this toggled on which is why you hear the click. Try turning it off and seeing if you still needed to upgrade washers. I bought 2 reels and noticed 1 clicked and 1 didn’t which is how I found the button. This buttin / feature is not mentioned anywhere in the minimal docs that come with the reel which is really stupid of Okuma.

    • @BritzFishing
      @BritzFishing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the insight! I've noticed that the clicker adds a little bit of drag but even with it off, the drag upgrade offers a big improvement. Even if the drag was smooth with the clicker off, it wouldn't be good enough because with a trolling reel most of the time the clicker is going to be on to hear the strike. With big salmon, there isn't always enough time to get the clicker off before they start running.

    • @OnlyFins86
      @OnlyFins86 ปีที่แล้ว

      just about every line counter reel has a clicker, did you think the button was there for no reason?

    • @MarkLedford
      @MarkLedford ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OnlyFins86have been fishing spinners for years but only recently started trolling off boats with my first bait caster with the line counter. I didn’t know it was a thing. Clicker is a great feature but does introduce considerable drag to free spool, just wish there was some basic documentation considering it’s not standard on all fishing rods

    If the reel is left hand retrieve, do the screws unscrew to the same direction ( lefty loosey) ??? I adk because the little screw on the plate that you have to hold with an adjustable wrench I stripped it trying to loosen it. It wouldn't move at all loosening it to the left (counter clockwise)

    • @BritzFishing
      @BritzFishing  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the only opposite screw in a lefty is the drag star bushing. Other than that, I'm guessing all the other screws have regular threads.

    • @BritzFishing
      @BritzFishing  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is possible that the one you mentioned is the opposite as well so it doesn't loosen under normal operating conditions

    • @Teango
      @Teango ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BritzFishingyou should have specified that dude. Now my screw is stripped. You need to remember that there are people following your tutorial to the T. Now my reel is ruined.

    • @BritzFishing
      @BritzFishing  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Teango I'm sorry to hear about your reel but it's tough to think of everything when making a video. When it comes to jobs like this, some common sense is required as well. If the screw isn't coming loose, don't apply excessive force. Stop and think about what may need to be done differently. If you want to fix it, they make tools to remove stripped screws.

    • @Teango
      @Teango ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BritzFishing the tutorial is great . It's just that little things like that can ruin the reel if they don't get clarified. For future reference and for anybody out there that has this same real in left hand retrieve configuration, be aware that that particular screw loosens clockwise ( also known as righty righty).

    also, you made a big mistake which can cause a major issue, (18:58)the screw that holds the hold plate to the shaft, the washer is not sitting on the nipple you see when you turn it it's not straight, so now you will have resistance on the hold plate when reeling and you are wearing out the hold plate. and that screw is not tightened properly. its frustrating watching people do repair or upgrade videos and do things completely incorrect so now you gave bad information.
