St. Mary's Class of 2014 Yap, Micronesia , FSM, at Colonia in the Catholic Elementary School at St Mary's This is a traditional attire for boys and girls on the island of Yap.
Its a graduation for an elementary school kids. The traditional attire is commonly worn in elementary schools on Yap while with the high school and college graduations the formal or grad gowns are prefered. Although there are exceptions some years. The outer islands of Yap state mostly choose the traditional attire as the cultural background is much more intact there. The boys wear loincloths known as 'thuw' and girls wear the colorful grass skirts or lava lavas. The mainlanders wear the grass skirts called "uong" while the outer island Yapese wear the intricately woven striped skirts "bagiy".
Thank You. I assumed its graduation but I was interested if its adaptation of cultural background or some coming out of age event that is now fused into graduation. Its nice to see that some nation still find ways to implement their own culture into "modern" events instead to just copy others and lose their own culture in that process.
Guys did one oh y'all knew that this was posted? It has been almost four years now...hard to believe. We will be graduating in a few months and off to college 😢 Love and Miss you guys😘
You should start a Yapese language playlist. I would love to learn more and I actually have the book, "Yapese Reference Grammer". I visited Yap and Ulithi a few years ago. It was nice.
Beautiful and inspiring. Such a mix of Island and European and Asian influences. No one is alone. Congratulations to the people of Yap, surviving with grace and courage is a world urging them to be the same as everyone else.
Get your westernized opinion out on from here. This is their culture which I find very beautiful how they do gradational ceremony and I respect it💯❤️ Thank you for this incredible video.
Any explanation of cultural background of this event?

Was on the USCGC Basswood in the early 80s and came to Yap once. We did some Aids to Navigation repairs. Good memories.
