There was such a buzz and energy in 1990 with the release of the Box set, Page/Plant at Knebworth and the 40th Atlantic Show in '88 and both having solo albums that same year. A lot of us thought they would get back together then. MTV had a Zep weekend as well, playing TSRTS and various related footage and a short documentary. It was a very exciting time. I remember like it was yesterday. I was glued to the TV (MTV) and all things Zep related

Yeah I was a massive Led fan at the time, waited all day for the Page and Plant thing at Knebworth, was glued to the TV, but then this girl I was nuts about came over and it was all about her at that moment and I missed everything. We didn't last long and I soon regretted missing the Led thing.
I was there such an incredible day, had no clue Jimmy was going to make an appearance, the crowd went absolutely bonkers when he came on!! definitely the highlight of the whole concert 👏👏
I've heard that before, of course, everyone has. I don't believe that Robert, Jimmy, JPJ, and John Henry sat down for tea and discussed the necessity of writing a song in response to the punk movement. Their statement was made in a tiny, dank club in 1977's Covenant Garden when they, Jimmy and Robert, told Rat Scabies, Captain Sensible, and Dave Vainian how much they liked their band after sitting thru their entire set. Unless, of course, if you were privy to being in Polar Studios when or whenever they wrote Wearing And Tearing. I don't mean to sound like a heel, but those kinds of bits of info are just too broad in scope. Think deeply about it, please.

Wearing and Tearing, in my opinion, was the type of Led Zeppelin "sound" that you would have heard a lot more of in the 1980's had the band moved forward. Jimmy and Bonzo wanted to recapture their hard edged guitar sound after In Through The Out Door, and Wearing and Tearing was their statement to punk rock that Zeppelin wasn't going away. They also played Rock and Roll at Knebworth 1990. Great performance...looking forward to this, Jose! Ernie
You right, but remember Walter's Walk was finished in 1982 and it was a little bit to the alternative side, and could be a part of the harder edge side that Jimmy and JB were talking about
@@BonzoDrummer No, Carouselambra was Carouselambra. In Through The Out Door was done, and Jimmy has stated in several interviews that Led Zeppelin was to become more guitar/drum oriented after 1980, as mentioned above. Jimmy's words, not ours.
@@tparker2095 How do we know Page would've had the final say? How did "Carouselambra" get made in the 1st place if he had creative control? Also, that synth sound was only just beginning its rise to dominate the '80s, so they would've been bucking the trend to go the opposite direction.
Saw them in Nashville in 98. At the end of the show ,people were shaking the seats so hard it sounded like a freight train and a tornado at the same time. I was terrified and excited at the same time. I've yet to attend a concert with that kind of reaction. I really liked Walking into Clarksdale, can't believe it wasn't more successful. Once more Jose proves himself every inch the consummate pro, he ventures so naturally beyond his core subject where others fear to tread. Aligning events of his own life while framing his subject matter so deftly within the fabric of world events in which his topic sits. This gives us a three pronged assault which serves the ailing memories of his elders while contextualising his subject matter to accommodate those younger fans perhaps unborn, but at least, too culturally immature to appreciate a music laying in wait for them on their road ahead. Most TH-cam broadcasters know (or should know) their topic intimately. Jose knows his and then some, label him as just another TH-camr at your peril! This guys material demands recognition way beyond TH-cam. As for the world of the professionals who document the times we live in, well they would be foolish not to welcome him into their brotherhood. Here once again we find our man doing what we all must do; find and take up our place in life by tailoring this where possible with a cocktail of our passions and skills. We all need to keep a roof over our heads that’s for sure. But beyond this though Jose labours not for kudos or praise but a desire to serve and commune with his brothers and sisters within the Zeppelin fraternity with a forensic knowledge and the same burning passion he shares with his followers. Great episode JCM. The mid-90s were hands down the best time of my life so far. I turned 18 in December 1991, started having a social life at last, got into bands in 1992 for most of the rest of the decade. Oh yes - and discovered Zeppelin, blues music and much more. It's as if Zeppelin's resurgence happened at just the right time for me as I was coming of age. I absolutely loved both Coverdale/Page and Fate of Nations, and then towards the end of the decade The Complete boxset become the proud centrepiece of my music collection. The most wonderful decade of them all

I think that's pretty much why the song didn't end up on Outdoor. Half the song was about Pagey's, Bonzo's, Grant's and the road crew's drug abuse in the late 70's thar caused all the division and dysfunctional in the band.

For me it was seeing knebworth 90, plant at Glastonbury 93, the Buxton alexis korner benefit concert April 94, page plant tour glastonbury, Birmingham, Sheffield 95. That was such a weird period for Page and Plant, their "dancing with the media" was in full flight, they had something to say but they were so very clever at making it mysterious, and when they were together in any interviews, it was magnified......Great archvial journey, thank you!!

I'm a *huge* Led Zep fan, and have been since Led Zeppelin I - I bought that album and played it non-stop. I had tickets to see them on that fateful tour and didn't get the chance when Plant's son died. I was gutted when Bonham died. I eagerly awaited all of Plant's solo releases and played them endlessly. This series is a wonderful retrospective, so thank you JCM, for all the time, effort, sweat and editing! Have said all that, I do have a problem with Plant's mind-set of not wanting to tour as "Led Zeppelin" with Jason on drums. He claims that LZ is over and done and doesn't want to revisit that, and that he's on to new and interesting and exciting stuff. (I do admire his integrity as he (and the others) could make a metric @$$load of money if they did tour.) My problem with him is that, he talks the talk, but doesn't walk the walk - he has ALWAYS made LZ tunes a significant part of his repertoire. Maybe fewer songs of late, but even touring with Allison Krause, they are there. Check out setlist.fm for the evidence.

Your thoughts on Plant i share some to say the least, i hope the 90s series helps to answer some of these questions, i am researching his career IN DEPTH. It's a treat and sometimes not, to revisit his shows, go through the entire set and analyze the perfromances. I must say 1990 is my least favorite Live year of his. 1983 Still tops the list. If you watch the boots of Page's Outrider tour, you will see he is healthy and back in playing shape. You can imagine Zeppelin touring and still tearing it up.
He was healthy by the Outrider Tour came yes, but physically he was still dragging the 80s confusion and depression. I love his 1988 renditions of In My Time of Dying, by 1990 he managed to get his mindset in the right mood too, lots of treasures Jimmy gave us in the 90s :) Thank you so much for watching!

I was born in 1984 we are both similar. I’m from Chicago and I seen Jordan win all their 6 championships on live tv. My childhood was awesome as well. I was born with The Beatles as far as I can remember.My family played them all the time.Their my favorite band. Next comes Led Zeppelin. Idk if anyone remembers a show on VH1 called Legends. They had a a lot of musical documentaries of groups. One day I seen Led Zeppelin’s episode and every song on there I loved. The only one I’ve had heard was Kashmir before. This was in the late 90s. I’ve bought the Early Days and Latter days when released. Then BBC sessions.Miss those days🤟🏼. 1990 Robert Plant looked similar to 1979 Plant.

In particular Nobody's Fault But Mine and No Quarter were outstanding, when he played Going To California the crowd sang every line so loud. Off the new album at the time I really enjoyed Tie Dye On The Highway, I thought it translated well live. One I wish he played was I Cried, incredible song, I consider it a 90s Over The Hills And Far Away. Wearing And Tearing kicked ass that night, we were so glad to hear it. Look forward to the rest of the 90s episodes.
In Madrid, 1990, they were a bit of a disappointment. The band sound was too processed, too compressed, too artificial, too planned, and the musicians looked quite far from the material. Plant was boringly using echo all over the place, and still unable to coordinate at least two dancing steps apart from his posture gimmicks. Difficult to defend, sorry. It made me think that Plant should have stopped, set back and spend a few years with LZ doing studio records instead of touring (healthier, and musically more daunting), rather than rushing ahead for the dollars.
7:14 The best show I ever saw in my life was at the Montreal forum for THE CULT's SONIC TEMPLE tour with Jason BONHAM opening. You forgot to list it. Jason had broken his arm in an ATV accident and played with a cast. His injured arm he played on a drum pad and the other with a stick on the kit. The Rolling Stones also played Montreal that night at the Olympic Stadium for their STEEL WHEELS tour and the next night which I also attended. For THE CULT and BONHAM I had 6th row center but watched at the front row up against the metal barriers separating the crowd from the stage. My ears are still ringing! I'm suprised that you missed posting Montreal in your list. Keep up the great work, I've seen many episodes over the years and have been binging for the last 24 hours! Rock on!

As I was a bit distracted by graduating university, getting married and starting my career in a terrible job market in this period, I was not very tuned into the comings and goings of the surviving Led Zeppelin members but this series looks like it will fill in a lot of those missed moments for me...thanks!

JCM, thank you for doing this series, this first episode fits right in with the excellent, in-depth coverage you've given to the other time periods. I first started paying attention to popular music around 1988, once I was in the 7th grade, but by 1990 my tastes were just starting to really develop. I hadn't discovered Led Zeppelin yet, but that was the year that I discovered Aerosmith. Discovering them first is probably what led me to discover and fall in love with Led Zeppelin. The next year I would journey a bit closer to Led Zeppelin territory, but wasn't really there yet. Man, I can tell this series is really going to bring back some memories.

I was just happy to see them on both tours in 1995 and 1998. They still had their spark. Its a shame that JPJ wasn’t there. But I would definitely love to go back to that time.
My first C.D was Led Zepplin ~ remasters. I remember buying Manic Nirvana on Vinyl, and thinking, "This IS Zepplin for the 90's!" My favourite track from that record is ~ 'Anniversary '. I saw Jimmy Page with Aerosmith in 1990 at Donnington Park MoR, they played, 'Train kept A'rollin'.

You covered this really well JCM. Some interviews I never heard before. I was lucky to see Plant twice on the 1990 tour at Rosemont IL and Alpine Valley East Troy WI. Also Bonham at Alpine Valley and with the Cult in Chicago. I was all in what great shows the 90s the Led Zeppelin vibe was strong !!! On the other side ...Its great to know you were a Chicago Bulls fan. Let me tell you it was a magical time to be a Bulls fan in the 90s here in Chicago. Going to a few games it was just awesome to watch that team play especially 23 it was a golden era. I remember listening to Dread Zeppelin while enjoying Real honey oil with some friends. Another thing, I've heard the story that in '73, not long after Nixon had created the DEA, he had Elvis to the WH to thank him for what he called EP's stand against drugs!!! And Nixon gave him a DEA badge and made him an Honorary Agent. 2 or 3 days later, Elvis went backstage at an LZ concert to meet them and thank them for covering That's Alright Mama, and to show them what Nixon had gave him. Hi Jose! We're almost the same age (I was born in 1986) it's interesting to hear your opinion on things from the 90s. Interesting you quote Santana, I was born and raised listening to the best music thanks to my dad and my uncle, both were crazy about Zeppelin but they knew how to value all genres so we listened to everything, rock, blues, classical music, reggae, even samba and bossa nova (I lived in Brazil and Peru when I was a kid). I love the songs from the first Santana albums, I've always been in love with percussion instruments and Latin rhythms. There are some hardcore Zepp fans who read my comments and think Jimmy is my idol but they are wrong. Jimmy has always been my crush and my most beloved guitarist but my idol is John Bonham 😅 my mom says I sounded like a possessed dervish when I listened to Zepp, even before I was out of diapers, because of the drums 😂 I loved this episode, you made me stop take a moment and think about what our lives would be like without technology, without the internet and consequently, without TH-cam, without videos, and also without the silly things that many do for views 🙄 the next time I go to Tokyo to visit my parents, I'll remember to listen to the old ones and precious albums, hundreds of albums lovingly guarded by them. Poor JPJ. He seems like such a soft spoken sweet genuine person. And besides Page, John Paul Jones has to be the backbone to Zeppelin. He’s definitely without a doubt a Genius! Without him no Zeppelin as we know it imo. Kinda like Faith no More without Roddy(keyboards),would be just another punk/thrash band if you ask me.

I think Plants first two solo albums are by far his best solo work. While it wasn't something ground shaking as his prior group. It was for much of it. His attempt at Mature Rock and it works very well. Sadly he tried to recapture his youth with his next several solo albums and never came back too the style.

I feel there was a shift around 1975-76 in Plants attitude and he resented Jimmy with a good dose of jealousy sprinkled through. He was quite an ass after that. Until 94 then probably like you said he didn't know where to head musically, along comes the reunion with Page.

Hi Jose! Excellent compilation here…as I vividly remember many of these events. The nineties truly was the last great decade. The events of 911 set us on a path of fear like no other event ever has with much of it still felt today. I blame “governments” for this. They use the public like a pawn in a chess match. Always did. People don’t want war or to fight and argue but governments do. Enough of that. What sticks out huge here is that 1987 Whitesnake record. John Sykes on guitar was simply untouchable. His Crying In The Rain solo was a real jaw dropper. Later, Steve Vai’s Sailing Ships opus was equally impressive I thought. I remember you mentioning Alcatraz, his initial big band. You might think of covering that album for us one day. Robert can slam David all he wanted….there was absolutely no denying his vocal abilities from ‘74-‘94. Don Henley’s The End Of The Innocence comes to mind here for me. He’s spot on with his lyrical content. He could see what was coming. A world that’s stripped down - neutralized, sterilized and corporatized. It’s as bad as ever today too. Looking forward to episode two. The music artists of the early 90's wanted to get away with what they thought was overproduced music of the 80's. Grunge acts, and other groups went "unplugged" , a return to stripped-down rock and roll (no keyboards or synthesizers ). Some of the artists that went unplugged produced music that was palatable to many people. But, Grunge, well, not all the bands were bad, but after a while, people wanted to hear uplifting songs or songs with great hooks. Grunge, personally, the style of clothing, especially, was depressing. And after the death of Kurt Cobain, and the break-up of Sound Garden, Grunge took a backseat, if not, slowly disappeared from the mainstream airwaves. Okay, I will admit, I grew up in the 1980's and have a bias for music from that era. But, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden, and the Cranberries, produced great music in the 90's.
You hit the nail on the head, Grunge was depressing, in the sense that it had to destroy the overproduced vibes of the 80s. It was a change, and in some ways, quite TOUGH. Rebellion was soul searching and it had a dark vibe to it, but then it evolved, late 90s stuff have a redemption quality to it. Gosh, i really couldn't stand the popular rock of that time. The radio was awful. Just hairband after hairband. There was a real cool, fun and experimental underground scene happening tho that I was kinda tuned into. A year later, a lot of those artists were mainstream, and for the next several years, I enjoyed the crap out of the radio. So much interesting music was being made. I'm sure that it has as much to do with my age (graduated high school in 91) as it does the music. But I'll take it. Catch ya on the next one!

Great stuff Jose as usual. I saw Percy 5 times during the Eighties, first time in Brighton in 83, Principal of Moments,when he wanted to be Phil Collins, it was ok but the audience felt cheated with the lack of Zeppelin material. I saw him with the Honey Drippers, which was his impression of the Rod Stewart American song book. Again no Zeppelin numbers and a bit too bland for me. Now and Zen was a bit better, though I felt he tried too hard to create a sound that others were doing it better. The Cult had just released Electric which was so Zeppelin orientated, the Mission with JPJ also gave a healthy nod towards where Plant had been. Page came on at Hammersmith on that tour and got a massive ovation which probably pissed Plant off! Though Outrider was a massive disappointment, it just did not work. Jimmy played ok, but well below his Zeppelin days. I think they both struggled in the Eighties, there were much better bands than them about, as with Deep Purple the new kids on the block had more about them than a pair of 40 somethings that could not create anything near what they had done in the 70’s…..unless Big Log floats you’re boat! Agree Knebworth 1990 was the best they had achieved in a decade live, but still no JPJ’s???
Paul i agree on all your points, absolutely. You know, imagine had Plant played Zeppelin in 83...with Collins and Blunt on guitar. You are right on The Cult and The Mission's sound close to Zepp, such great bands. The Eighties were rough indeed. If only Jonesy was there at Knebworth 1990 but you know hehe. Saw them a few times on the Page and Plant 95’ tour. I was 15 heavily into LZ. It was great but It would’ve been better if they included JPJ. I remember everyone kinda scratching their heads at that one
We're basically the same age, I saw them in June 1998 just a few weeks after my 19th birthday. Looking back, I don't remember if it really crossed my mind much why JPJ wasn't there. I certainly wish he'd been, but I wasn't even online yet in 1998, I guess I just wasn't exposed to what today would be endlessly discussed online. I probably thought it would have been too close to a full reunion and I thought hell would freeze over before that happened.

Plant = BY FAAAAAAAR my least favorite member of Zeppelin. Not because of his voice, but because of WHO HE IS as a person. If he could throw the other 3 under the bus and somehow take full credit for LZ he’d do it in an instant. He’s definitely the least important of the 4. Despite what he seems to believe. (That he’s #1). I can’t hardly stand to hear him talk anymore, much less sing with that nasally excuse for a voice he’s got left. ✋🏽🎤💥💨

There was such a buzz and energy in 1990 with the release of the Box set, Page/Plant at Knebworth and the 40th Atlantic Show in '88 and both having solo albums that same year. A lot of us thought they would get back together then. MTV had a Zep weekend as well, playing TSRTS and various related footage and a short documentary. It was a very exciting time. I remember like it was yesterday. I was glued to the TV (MTV) and all things Zep related

Yeah I was a massive Led fan at the time, waited all day for the Page and Plant thing at Knebworth, was glued to the TV, but then this girl I was nuts about came over and it was all about her at that moment and I missed everything. We didn't last long and I soon regretted missing the Led thing.
MTV Zep Weekend! I definitely remember that. Have VHS tapes of that somewhere 😀. Yep, thought the reunion was on right there.
I was there such an incredible day, had no clue Jimmy was going to make an appearance, the crowd went absolutely bonkers when he came on!! definitely the highlight of the whole concert 👏👏

I don't believe that Robert, Jimmy, JPJ, and John Henry sat down for tea and discussed the necessity of writing a song in response to the punk movement. Their statement was made in a tiny, dank club in 1977's Covenant Garden when they, Jimmy and Robert, told Rat Scabies, Captain Sensible, and Dave Vainian how much they liked their band after sitting thru their entire set. Unless, of course, if you were privy to being in Polar Studios when or whenever they wrote Wearing And Tearing. I don't mean to sound like a heel, but those kinds of bits of info are just too broad in scope. Think deeply about it, please.

Wearing and Tearing, in my opinion, was the type of Led Zeppelin "sound" that you would have heard a lot more of in the 1980's had the band moved forward. Jimmy and Bonzo wanted to recapture their hard edged guitar sound after In Through The Out Door, and Wearing and Tearing was their statement to punk rock that Zeppelin wasn't going away. They also played Rock and Roll at Knebworth 1990. Great performance...looking forward to this, Jose! Ernie
I think it would've been more "Carouselambra", and their legacy wouldn't be what it is today if they'd kept going.
You right, but remember Walter's Walk was finished in 1982 and it was a little bit to the alternative side, and could be a part of the harder edge side that Jimmy and JB were talking about
@@BonzoDrummer No, Carouselambra was Carouselambra. In Through The Out Door was done, and Jimmy has stated in several interviews that Led Zeppelin was to become more guitar/drum oriented after 1980, as mentioned above. Jimmy's words, not ours.
@@tparker2095 How do we know Page would've had the final say? How did "Carouselambra" get made in the 1st place if he had creative control? Also, that synth sound was only just beginning its rise to dominate the '80s, so they would've been bucking the trend to go the opposite direction.
Jimmy lost creative control, but him and Bonzo were determined to reclaim it after In Through The Out Door.
Saw them in Nashville in 98. At the end of the show ,people were shaking the seats so hard it sounded like a freight train and a tornado at the same time. I was terrified and excited at the same time. I've yet to attend a concert with that kind of reaction. I really liked Walking into Clarksdale, can't believe it wasn't more successful. That Summer 98 tour was great. I caught one of those shows. Took nearly 20 years to find a recording of it.

Once more Jose proves himself every inch the consummate pro, he ventures so naturally beyond his core subject where others fear to tread. Aligning events of his own life while framing his subject matter so deftly within the fabric of world events in which his topic sits. This gives us a three pronged assault which serves the ailing memories of his elders while contextualising his subject matter to accommodate those younger fans perhaps unborn, but at least, too culturally immature to appreciate a music laying in wait for them on their road ahead. Most TH-cam broadcasters know (or should know) their topic intimately. Jose knows his and then some, label him as just another TH-camr at your peril! This guys material demands recognition way beyond TH-cam. As for the world of the professionals who document the times we live in, well they would be foolish not to welcome him into their brotherhood.
Here once again we find our man doing what we all must do; find and take up our place in life by tailoring this where possible with a cocktail of our passions and skills. We all need to keep a roof over our heads that’s for sure. But beyond this though Jose labours not for kudos or praise but a desire to serve and commune with his brothers and sisters within the Zeppelin fraternity with a forensic knowledge and the same burning passion he shares with his followers. And all this brought expertly into focus in a tapestry majestically woven with a technical mastery and artistic magic second to none. Great episode JCM. The mid-90s were hands down the best time of my life so far. I turned 18 in December 1991, started having a social life at last, got into bands in 1992 for most of the rest of the decade. Oh yes - and discovered Zeppelin, blues music and much more. It's as if Zeppelin's resurgence happened at just the right time for me as I was coming of age. I absolutely loved both Coverdale/Page and Fate of Nations, and then towards the end of the decade The Complete boxset become the proud centrepiece of my music collection. The most wonderful decade of them all

I think that's pretty much why the song didn't end up on Outdoor. Half the song was about Pagey's, Bonzo's, Grant's and the road crew's drug abuse in the late 70's thar caused all the division and dysfunctional in the band.

Page and the Black Crowes was the perfect ending for the 90s, poor Jimmy you know, the more i do my research his post Zeppelin life was not easy, despite many who think being a millionaire solves all your problems, no, they are humans still!

I'm a *huge* Led Zep fan, and have been since Led Zeppelin I - I bought that album and played it non-stop. I had tickets to see them on that fateful tour and didn't get the chance when Plant's son died. I was gutted when Bonham died. I eagerly awaited all of Plant's solo releases and played them endlessly. This series is a wonderful retrospective, so thank you JCM, for all the time, effort, sweat and editing! Have said all that, I do have a problem with Plant's mind-set of not wanting to tour as "Led Zeppelin" with Jason on drums. He claims that LZ is over and done and doesn't want to revisit that, and that he's on to new and interesting and exciting stuff. (I do admire his integrity as he (and the others) could make a metric @$$load of money if they did tour.) My problem with him is that, he talks the talk, but doesn't walk the walk - he has ALWAYS made LZ tunes a significant part of his repertoire. Maybe fewer songs of late, but even touring with Allison Krause, they are there. Check out setlist.fm for the evidence.

Your thoughts on Plant i share some to say the least, i hope the 90s series helps to answer some of these questions, i am researching his career IN DEPTH. It's a treat and sometimes not, to revisit his shows, go through the entire set and analyze the perfromances. I must say 1990 is my least favorite Live year of his. 1983 Still tops the list. If you watch the boots of Page's Outrider tour, you will see he is healthy and back in playing shape. You can imagine Zeppelin touring and still tearing it up.
He was healthy by the Outrider Tour came yes, but physically he was still dragging the 80s confusion and depression. I love his 1988 renditions of In My Time of Dying, by 1990 he managed to get his mindset in the right mood too, lots of treasures Jimmy gave us in the 90s :) Thank you so much for watching!

I was born in 1984 we are both similar. I’m from Chicago and I seen Jordan win all their 6 championships on live tv. My childhood was awesome as well. I was born with The Beatles as far as I can remember.My family played them all the time.Their my favorite band. Next comes Led Zeppelin. Idk if anyone remembers a show on VH1 called Legends. They had a a lot of musical documentaries of groups. One day I seen Led Zeppelin’s episode and every song on there I loved. The only one I’ve had heard was Kashmir before. This was in the late 90s. I’ve bought the Early Days and Latter days when released. Then BBC sessions.Miss those days🤟🏼. 1990 Robert Plant looked similar to 1979 Plant.

In particular Nobody's Fault But Mine and No Quarter were outstanding, when he played Going To California the crowd sang every line so loud. Off the new album at the time I really enjoyed Tie Dye On The Highway, I thought it translated well live. One I wish he played was I Cried, incredible song, I consider it a 90s Over The Hills And Far Away. Wearing And Tearing kicked ass that night, we were so glad to hear it. Look forward to the rest of the 90s episodes.
Same here only Zep related show I ever saw was that tour.
In Madrid, 1990, they were a bit of a disappointment. The band sound was too processed, too compressed, too artificial, too planned, and the musicians looked quite far from the material. Plant was boringly using echo all over the place, and still unable to coordinate at least two dancing steps apart from his posture gimmicks. Difficult to defend, sorry. It made me think that Plant should have stopped, set back and spend a few years with LZ doing studio records instead of touring (healthier, and musically more daunting), rather than rushing ahead for the dollars.

Dred Zeppelin kicked ass! I saw them once at a large club.
7:14 The best show I ever saw in my life was at the Montreal forum for THE CULT's SONIC TEMPLE tour with Jason BONHAM opening. You forgot to list it. Jason had broken his arm in an ATV accident and played with a cast. His injured arm he played on a drum pad and the other with a stick on the kit. The Rolling Stones also played Montreal that night at the Olympic Stadium for their STEEL WHEELS tour and the next night which I also attended. For THE CULT and BONHAM I had 6th row center but watched at the front row up against the metal barriers separating the crowd from the stage. My ears are still ringing! I'm suprised that you missed posting Montreal in your list.

JCM, thank you for doing this series, this first episode fits right in with the excellent, in-depth coverage you've given to the other time periods. I first started paying attention to popular music around 1988, once I was in the 7th grade, but by 1990 my tastes were just starting to really develop. I hadn't discovered Led Zeppelin yet, but that was the year that I discovered Aerosmith. Discovering them first is probably what led me to discover and fall in love with Led Zeppelin. The next year I would journey a bit closer to Led Zeppelin territory, but wasn't really there yet. Man, I can tell this series is really going to bring back some memories.
Great thing to discover Aerosmith and then Zeppelin, it works definitely, go for the source after a variation of it. Hope this brings back many memories for sure! Thank you very much for watching, stick around for Episode 2 of Led Zeppelin 1990s

I remember buying Manic Nirvana on Vinyl, and thinking, "This IS Zepplin for the 90's!"
My favourite track from that record is ~ 'Anniversary '.

You covered this really well JCM. Some interviews I never heard before. I was lucky to see Plant twice on the 1990 tour at Rosemont IL and Alpine Valley East Troy WI. Also Bonham at Alpine Valley and with the Cult in Chicago. I was all in what great shows the 90s the Led Zeppelin vibe was strong !!! On the other side ...Its great to know you were a Chicago Bulls fan. Let me tell you it was a magical time to be a Bulls fan in the 90s here in Chicago. Going to a few games it was just awesome to watch that team play especially 23 it was a golden era. I remember listening to Dread Zeppelin while enjoying Real honey oil with some friends. Another thing, I've heard the story that in '73, not long after Nixon had created the DEA, he had Elvis to the WH to thank him for what he called EP's stand against drugs!!! And Nixon gave him a DEA badge and made him an Honorary Agent. 2 or 3 days later, Elvis went backstage at an LZ concert to meet them and thank them for covering That's Alright Mama, and to show them what Nixon had gave him. Hi Jose! We're almost the same age (I was born in 1986) it's interesting to hear your opinion on things from the 90s. Interesting you quote Santana, I was born and raised listening to the best music thanks to my dad and my uncle, both were crazy about Zeppelin but they knew how to value all genres so we listened to everything, rock, blues, classical music, reggae, even samba and bossa nova (I lived in Brazil and Peru when I was a kid). I love the songs from the first Santana albums, I've always been in love with percussion instruments and Latin rhythms. There are some hardcore Zepp fans who read my comments and think Jimmy is my idol but they are wrong. Jimmy has always been my crush and my most beloved guitarist but my idol is John Bonham 😅 my mom says I sounded like a possessed dervish when I listened to Zepp, even before I was out of diapers, because of the drums 😂 I loved this episode, you made me stop take a moment and think about what our lives would be like without technology, without the internet and consequently, without TH-cam, without videos, and also without the silly things that many do for views 🙄 the next time I go to Tokyo to visit my parents, I'll remember to listen to the old ones and precious albums, hundreds of albums lovingly guarded by them. Poor JPJ. He seems like such a soft spoken sweet genuine person. And besides Page, John Paul Jones has to be the backbone to Zeppelin. He’s definitely without a doubt a Genius! Without him no Zeppelin as we know it imo. Kinda like Faith no More without Roddy(keyboards),would be just another punk/thrash band if you ask me.
Geniuses are usually battiling life's ways and roads, Jones certainly stayed true to himself and for me, the best musician in Led Zeppelin. Thank you for watching!
I think Plants first two solo albums are by far his best solo work. While it wasn't something ground shaking as his prior group. It was for much of it. His attempt at Mature Rock and it works very well. Sadly he tried to recapture his youth with his next several solo albums and never came back too the style.

I feel there was a shift around 1975-76 in Plants attitude and he resented Jimmy with a good dose of jealousy sprinkled through. He was quite an ass after that. Until 94 then probably like you said he didn't know where to head musically, along comes the reunion with Page.

Hi Jose! Excellent compilation here…as I vividly remember many of these events. The nineties truly was the last great decade. The events of 911 set us on a path of fear like no other event ever has with much of it still felt today. I blame “governments” for this. They use the public like a pawn in a chess match. Always did. People don’t want war or to fight and argue but governments do. Enough of that. What sticks out huge here is that 1987 Whitesnake record. John Sykes on guitar was simply untouchable. His Crying In The Rain solo was a real jaw dropper. Later, Steve Vai’s Sailing Ships opus was equally impressive I thought. I remember you mentioning Alcatraz, his initial big band. You might think of covering that album for us one day. Robert can slam David all he wanted….there was absolutely no denying his vocal abilities from ‘74-‘94. Don Henley’s The End Of The Innocence comes to mind here for me. He’s spot on with his lyrical content. He could see what was coming. A world that’s stripped down - neutralized, sterilized and corporatized. It’s as bad as ever today too. Looking forward to episode two. Once again, the background soundtrack here is as equally impressive to me as the compiled footage. Thank you once more my friend.

The music artists of the early 90's wanted to get away with what they thought was overproduced music of the 80's. Grunge acts, and other groups went "unplugged" , a return to stripped-down rock and roll (no keyboards or synthesizers ). Some of the artists that went unplugged produced music that was palatable to many people. But, Grunge, well, not all the bands were bad, but after a while, people wanted to hear uplifting songs or songs with great hooks. Grunge, personally, the style of clothing, especially, was depressing. And after the death of Kurt Cobain, and the break-up of Sound Garden, Grunge took a backseat, if not, slowly disappeared from the mainstream airwaves. Okay, I will admit, I grew up in the 1980's and have a bias for music from that era. But, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden, and the Cranberries, produced great music in the 90's.
You hit the nail on the head, Grunge was depressing, in the sense that it had to destroy the overproduced vibes of the 80s. It was a change, and in some ways, quite TOUGH. Rebellion was soul searching and it had a dark vibe to it, but then it evolved, late 90s stuff have a redemption quality to it. Was an interesting walk down memory lane for me thinking about 1990. Gosh, i really couldn't stand the popular rock of that time. The radio was awful. Just hairband after hairband.
There was a real cool, fun and experimental underground scene happening tho that I was kinda tuned into. A year later, a lot of those artists were mainstream, and for the next several years, I enjoyed the crap out of the radio. So much interesting music was being made.
I'm sure that it has as much to do with my age (graduated high school in 91) as it does the music. But I'll take it.

Great stuff Jose as usual. I saw Percy 5 times during the Eighties, first time in Brighton in 83, Principal of Moments,when he wanted to be Phil Collins, it was ok but the audience felt cheated with the lack of Zeppelin material. I saw him with the Honey Drippers, which was his impression of the Rod Stewart American song book. Again no Zeppelin numbers and a bit too bland for me. Now and Zen was a bit better, though I felt he tried too hard to create a sound that others were doing it better. The Cult had just released Electric which was so Zeppelin orientated, the Mission with JPJ also gave a healthy nod towards where Plant had been. Page came on at Hammersmith on that tour and got a massive ovation which probably pissed Plant off! Though Outrider was a massive disappointment, it just did not work. Jimmy played ok, but well below his Zeppelin days. I think they both struggled in the Eighties, there were much better bands than them about, as with Deep Purple the new kids on the block had more about them than a pair of 40 somethings that could not create anything near what they had done in the 70’s…..unless Big Log floats you’re boat! Agree Knebworth 1990 was the best they had achieved in a decade live, but still no JPJ’s???
Paul i agree on all your points, absolutely. You know, imagine had Plant played Zeppelin in 83...with Collins and Blunt on guitar. You are right on The Cult and The Mission's sound close to Zepp, such great bands. The Eighties were rough indeed. If only Jonesy was there at Knebworth 1990 but you know hehe. Saw them a few times on the Page and Plant 95’ tour. I was 15 heavily into LZ. It was great but It would’ve been better if they included JPJ. I remember everyone kinda scratching their heads at that one
We're basically the same age, I saw them in June 1998 just a few weeks after my 19th birthday. Looking back, I don't remember if it really crossed my mind much why JPJ wasn't there. I certainly wish he'd been, but I wasn't even online yet in 1998, I guess I just wasn't exposed to what today would be endlessly discussed online. I probably thought it would have been too close to a full reunion and I thought hell would freeze over before that happened.
JPJ was definitely a great idea in 1998 the more i look into it, i liked the 1995 set list for sure. So cool you saw them Tyler, i bet it was loud! Thank you very much for watching, stay tuned for Episode 2.

1990 certainly was a time of high hopes for us serious Led Heads, to the point of Unledded and Walking to Clarksdale were kind of pale versions of what fans truly wanted.
