I thought the cross guard was also a poor decision but at least it could be argued but a whip takes the cake for dumb ideas. Even if it's being controlled by the force it would just tire out the user or we get a Frieza situation where you get distracted and it kills you.

One of the advantages to a whip is being able to use your own body for tension and slack, like being able to wrap it around your body or arms and then unwind it to keep its momentum going. A lightsaber whip loses half its functionality.

I've actually done some research into lightsaber whips from the EU (or lightwhips, as they are called), and technically they are not lightsabers. Lightsaber hilts are constructed around a single crystal and are specifically designed with a cell structure to emit a solid beam of light, whereas lightwhips are multiple crystal shards chained together, similar to the cat o' nine tails, and they do not have this cell structure. On top of that, lightwhips are also incredibly rare due to the skill required to use it properly, and it's also not as strong as a real lightsaber. I think the only reason they can be used against lightsabers at all is if the wielder has enough mental discipline to create a "Force shield" around the end of the whip, which is a precedent that has existed for a long time (Tales of the Jedi comics from the 90s). You used Lumiya (0:14) and Githany (0:17) as examples of this, so I just thought I should specify that neither of them is really using a lightsaber.
