    I love the encouragement and the advancement tips. Rather than going 'Here's how we help you know how far to draw back.' it's 'But when you're ready you should try painting free so you can manage your painting.'. It's really nice, and very encouraging for newer painters. Thanks, mate. Another amazing video. :)

    Watching Warrick paint in detail, with the accompanying dialogue explaining the thought behind it, stokes images of Wagner and his music...in a class by himself. Keep them coming Warrick, very much appreciated.

      Buddy thanks so much for the compliment, but I feel that you aimed that a little too high! I think that what I offer is just the chance for viewers to watch painting happen with the focus primarily being on what the airbrush is doing, and how we might use it for certain effects. In terms of actual painting skill, I must confess that I do feel extremely rusty as I simply don't get to paint as much as I would like! It's really important though - there are much more skilful painters that me on YT! ... and to that end I'm currently setting up a small studio in my office space so that I can get to it much more regularly. But I'm really glad that you find the content useful!

      Glad you found it interesting! The goal is really just to show various painting processes in full. I think that sometimes it's useful to have unedited painting processes, so that people can see all the things that happen during the process and how to deal with them. Makes it a bit long, but hopefully that approach is different to others, and as a consequence, offers some aspects which are unique.

    At first when I saw the run length of the video I thought "Over an hour???" THEN when I saw how much was done basically real time, WOW! That was SO worth watching to see the obvious skill and mastery of the airbrush! That was a lot of work done in not a great deal of time.
    Well done! A great advert for your product! (I am awaiting mine as I type this, hopefully should be here soon!)

    • @harderairbrush
      @harderairbrush  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think it's useful to just show the process pretty much real time as it shows the bits and bobs like cleaning etc and how long it SHOULD take when you're doing it enough and well, but not obsessively. It's really quick once you have the methods down. Hopefully this helps people to figure out a smooth and seamless painting flow. Thanks for joining us!

    The workflow in this video is just amazing. In my past years my workflow got pretty solid and I rarely get clogs and issues. But this is worth checking and adapting to. I always washed out my cup. If I can, I save the leftover paint, the rest is washed into a dump cup with distilled water. Than I run through a little bit of cleaner, rinse with water and add my next paint. I never thought of doing it this quickly and never thought of washing the airbrush with back-flow method. Very insightful for me.

    Really found this video inspirational. I received my '24 Evo yesterday, so really looking forward to putting it through it paces. Just taking it out of the box and trying the trigger seems so much smoother.
    One point when doing an occasional heavy clean down what do I use as a lube or, does it need that with the new coatings?
    Many thanks Warwick you and HS seemed to have moved airbrushing into a new era.

    • @harderairbrush
      @harderairbrush  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hey Tony - thanks very much for the comment. The coatings don't NEED lubrication at all - the sliding fits are all engineered to be fine with or without. I really like putting the lube on because when cleaning, everything just wipes clean. I always get worried when people talk about "heavy cleans" or "deep cleans". You shouldn't need either :-) it's not that it's a problem for the airbrush, just that it's a waste of time - you shouldn't get that dirty that you need these heavy cleanings. Even when I was painting bikes and such and working for many hours at a time, I never needed a "deep clean". I keep hearing this on the internet - deep cleaning your airbrush - it's not a carpet :-)) keep a smear of lube on those parts in the back there, and with a quick wipe, all's good. Keep it easy! Honestly, if you watch the point on the video when I put down the airbrush set-up with the 0.45mm - that's all I would do anyway - it's not necessary to go back to that airbrush and clean it again before putting it away. Hope that helps put it into context, and keep your focus on painting for the maximum time, and keeping a cleaning regime which is effective, but isn't time out of your life which you can't ever get back :-)

    Great info. Cant wait for the Infinity! I have 2 of older ones. Did you guys replace the needle sizes from 1.5, 2, 4 to these new sizes or add them? I assume old sizes will work in new brushes and new needles in the originals?

    • @harderairbrush
      @harderairbrush  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey there - the needles are not new - think of them as 0.2x and 0.4x i.e. they work in both. The nozzles are new and the air caps are new. However, everything can be used interchangeably as long as you stick within 0.2x and 0.4x - I hope that's clear! For example, 0.4mm nozzle inside 0.45mm aircap - fine. Or 0.4mm aircap with 0.45mm nozzle - fine. Or 0.28mm aircap with 0.2mm nozzle - no problem. And yes, as far as the heads are concerned, as with H&S tradition, all heads are always compatible with all airbrushes, new or old.

    As I'm just diving into airbrushing I'm currently wondering most about whether or not to wear a mask. I mean, I get why one wouldn't wear a mask when recording a tutorial, but also it's quite underrepresented in the videos I saw so far. Thoughts on masks?
    Beside that, the way you record tutorials at H&S is a huge inspiration. Highly appreciated!

    • @harderairbrush
      @harderairbrush  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey buddy - thanks very much. You can't go wrong with a mask. However, If you're a glasses wearer, you may be entitled to condensation. Unfortunately. I would say try to work in a well ventilated space, generally. Also, ALWAYS use a spray out pot for your cleaning process - 90% of your airborne's are produced during this process. If you use a little booth, then I think the need for a mask is less.

    • @harderairbrush
      @harderairbrush  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      No problem - and thank you for asking the question too. Generally, I believe that people spend far too much time doing much too complicated routines at the end of the session because they don't do the very quick easy ones DURING the session. Honestly, all this ultrasonic stuff is only ever a compensation for a bad work process. I don't know a single airbrusher who is at a high level who ever needs to ultrasonic their equipment, and most don't strip them either. Just a good cleaning process, always between colours, and the same but perhaps with a couple of extra cupfuls at the end, followed by a needle wipe is all I've ever done, whether I'm working with automotive base coats, 2k epoxy colours, or water based acrylics. Keeping it simple really is the answer.

    I did not even realise the cup form had a purpose :D I've had an evolution cr for about 2 or 3 years now. This year my wife got me a badger patriot 105 for my "rough" works. It is cheaper and not that huge of a deal if I make something to it. What I noticed and never had with the evolution, is when I paint from "top down" I poured down paint on my hand a lot of times. I never had that happen with the evolution :'D Now I realise why :'D The patriot has a completely straight cup wall and without a cap on, it just pours out in this position :'D Now I have to order a cap for that :D

      This is what I love about the design side of the job! Just looking at what is possible with a cup... finger shaped at the bottom so that you can clean it much easier (this is the case with the internal shapes on all the 2024 airbrushes) and with a perfectly shaped return at the top, so that if there is slopping in the cup, the paint is curved back to splash in itself like a perfect barrelling wave :-) there is always a detail waiting for us to discover to improve your painting experience, and this is what we love to do. So cool to see people discovering these details - thanks for the comment!

    Question on bubble back for you! I've got an Evolution, not one of the new ones, it doesn't have that pinch tip, it's got the one with all the holes in it! How do I do bubble back as it won't work trying to block the tip, I find I have to ever so slightly unscrew the tip to do it but I need to be careful as if I unscrew it slightly too much it creates way too much back flow and turns in to a jacuzzi throwing paint out the cup! 😅

    • @harderairbrush
      @harderairbrush  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I started out by browsing my paints and picking out the palette. This is typically how I begin. I have a very rough plan in my mind, but am always prepared to change it based upon what I’m seeing. Yellow found its way in there mainly as I’ve never used yellow on a dragon before as a significant colour and wanted to try it. And everything else was chosen as a result of that. But, for example, I used way more green than planned as I was just really enjoying that colour whilst I was painting it. Actually I think it really brought it all together.
      For the bubble back - I’m not a fan of the “loosen the head” technique at all. Mainly as you then must tighten it back into a locked needle which might be a bad idea for your nozzle. Something coming very soon for this.

    Hi Warwick. Today I received my new H&S airbrush, the new Ultra. I am fairly new to airbrushing and not an expert at all. This brush just reeks of quality, but I need some advice.
    Put some primer down tonight and went really well. I then put some Vallejo paint through but got a bad clog! Is this because of paint not thin enough or was the psi too high, it was around 22 psi. Hope you can help a new boy. Great videos by the way, keep it up please.

    • @harderairbrush
      @harderairbrush  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey Ken - thanks for reaching out. One of the main things with the airbrush to really understand is the thinning. Everyone wants to be told: thin it by this amount. And it's the wrong way to ask the question. Look at it this way: what happens with paint in an airbrush when it's too thing, versus what happens when it's too thick. On MOST tasks, too thick is a drama, and too thin doesn't matter at all. So whilst you're learning, thinning a little too much can only help. The only error that you could get into is that you apply the paint too wet, but if you keep an eye on it as it is going down and make sure that you never allow more than a satin gloss to build in terms of wetness, you can't go wrong. Once you've got some miles under your belt and really understand the airbrush better, then start reducing your thinning to see if there's anything there that you like. IF you want a general number to work to, and you are in the Vallejo system, try 1:1 with any of the Air paints. Works well, and that's what the Color Control collar is set for. By the way, all the painting videos that I've done so far have been using Vallejo, so you can see that every now and then I'll clean up that needle tip - this is what stops clogging. It's not a problem of the paint - it's just a normal part of airbrushing. My son lives in Liverpool - next time I'm visiting him from Germany I'll come and visit you for a quick half hour spraying session together if you like to get you going forward further YNWA :-) email me on wjs@harder-airbrush.de

    Fantastic video! One question though - maybe I missed it, but you don't seem to mention what psi you have your compressor set to. Is it just set to a single level or do you change it throughout? I mainly wondered because early on when you're doing the underpainting, you get in very close to the eye with no problem.

    • @harderairbrush
      @harderairbrush  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In this video everything is done at 25psi. Honestly, in my opinion, people are getting a bit lost with the thought that varying the pressure needs to be done so often. It’s a looong way down the road - before you get there, you must have total control over the airbrush otherwise varying the pressure just gets in the way of understanding the way it responds. Exclusion from that is if you want create texture - then you just drop the pressure way down until the airbrush starts to stipple.

    • @mrspiderhead8794
      @mrspiderhead8794 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@harderairbrush Thank you, that was quite an eye-opening response.
      l've been using one of the starter kit compressors (30psi unchangeable) that came with an Ultra (2.0 needle size) a few years back and I was convinced that it was too high pressure because it seemed like even thinning paint slightly resulted in spidering, but if you're getting that close just fine at 25 psi then 30 presumably shouldn't be too high for working a couple of inches from the model? Sounds like I just need to practice more and get a feeling for a) the brush, and b) getting the hang of thinning the paint just right.
      Thank you for indulging a beginner question :)

    • @harderairbrush
      @harderairbrush  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey buddy - never a problem! Please ask away... no honestly, 30 psi isn't too much. In fact, one of our very good friends here in Germany, an absolutely incredible artist which uses the airbrush to incredible levels of detail, does almost all his painting at 35psi because he enjoys the absolutely instant response that the higher pressure gives. He paints most often on motorcycles, so it is a non-porous surface (this makes the paint more sensitive to spidering of course) but it all comes down to practice, ultimately. Also, using the appropriate brand of thinner also helps - stick within whatever brand of paint you're using. That helps too. Don't get distracted with all the flow improvers etc, just use the thinner from the same paint brand, and focus on learning the trigger control, and managing tip dry - as per this video. One great tip is if you feel you need to improve your trigger control, just pick the airbrush up dry whilst watching TV and just practice holding it and making very small micro-pulls on the trigger whilst holding it very close to the palm of your other hand. It's amazing how much this improves control, just by working on the muscle memory and tuning in to the feel of the trigger. Hope it helps!

      Your colour question is interesting… I wanted the red to be really punchy… but I can see n interesting potential for skimming it with the green from an angle to get that prismatic effect… the key to this is to use the paint with a relatively opaque mix but to apply it extremely sparingly.

    • @harderairbrush
      @harderairbrush  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey there - firstly great to hear that you're getting into airbrushing! With regard to a super quiet compressor - unfortunately, you are right that super quiet does cost significantly more. For that requirement, there is still nothing better than the oil-filled compressors that have been used in airbrush studios since the 1950s. They do require a bit of maintenance, and they are expensive to ship, BUT they are extraordinarily reliable, and as long as you keep up with the very easy, very basic maintenance, they will last you 25 years or more. There are several brands available, depending on where you are in the world, but I'd recommend any of the following: Eurotec; HANSA; Jun-Air; Silent-Air; Bambi.. that should cover most territories. If you're looking for single airbrush use, take one of the 20-25lpm models, if you're looking for something which will allow you to work for unlimited periods of time, take one of the 30lpm models. For a single user, the more expensive 50lpm models are just an expense which in my opinion isn't really necessary. Make sure that when you read the specification, it IS an oil-filled compressor. Then you will know that it is the super-silent type. Hope that helps!

      Hey John... it's not designed to do that out the box, as the design priority on the ULTRA head is to give people a way to see the needle tip, clean the needle tip, but ensure it is protected at all times. Same as all of the 2024 H&S head concepts, BUT with the difference that the ULTRA head is designed to give easy results in the hands of a beginner - so we don't want them to handle the needle tip yet! Also, bubble back mixing does require some finesse! But don't worry, we have something coming very soon.

      Hey buddy. Firstly the picture that you posted is the old Ultra... Anyway, if you use that yellow cap, it will definitely bubble back :-) with regard to bubble back technique. Yes, I use it in this video, because I'm using the Evolution. Remember the ULTRA is designed specifically as a beginner airbrush. There's a lot more to starting airbrushing than just being able to bubble back, and there are many other ways to mix paint in the cup. Therefore the ULTRA head is prioritised to something much more important to beginners - teaching them a method to deal with tip-dry and therefore preventing clogs. Now the challenge is to do that by making the needle tip visible to them, AND accessible to them, but keeping it very well protected whilst the beginner learns how to deal with it. Hence our solution to that with the large holes in the side to enable cleaning with a large #8 brush. Mastering keeping the needle tip clean ensures that our beginners get to paint lots and lots with no problems at the start! A much higher priority for us than a slightly faster colour mix/ clean. And of course, because H&S maintains our cross compatibility, once our beginner gets to grips with the basics, they can fit the Evolution head to their Ultra, and enjoy bubble back mixing! I hope this helps you to understand our design compromises (and of course, we understand, these choices are usual compromises :-) )... W

I trieds the yellow cap again and got it to bubble. Had to press the cap harder then I thought to get it air sealed. If it is not 100% sealed you spray into the cap and spash color over the front end of the airbrush. This happened to me and thats why I stopped using it. Maybe something more elastic like rubber would be better to seal it. Anyway, probably user error like most airbrush problems ;-) Other then that I am happy with my new Ultra and it was a big step up from my cheap ebay airbrush that I was using befor.

Prime: 1/2 turn out from closed, plus a little; Base: 1/2 turn out from closed; Setting I: 1/4 turn out from closed; Setting II: 1/6 turn out from closed (imagine turning the dial at the rear from 12 o'clock to 2 o'clock; Setting III: open a touch. Hope that helps! These are approximate, of course, and depend somewhat on your paint thinning ratios, and also which head you set it up on. I'd encourage you to use the 0.45mm head - hopefully you bought the 2in1! Keep in touch and we'll guide you!

    I struggle with primers, they always leave strands of paint and clog the airbrush, I end up stripping it all down to deep clean it, i need to upgrade my airbrush from a cheap £40 one.
