Just started audio engineering school, they introduced us to Patchbays today and it was over my head. This helped more than anything I’ve read or watched!
It's surprising to see how many videos there are out there that fail to mention the connections on the BACK of the patchbay, and this video is no exception. It would be much more informative if the ENTIRE signal flow was described - From instrument > patchbay > sound card > patchbay > external signal processor... Also the differences between TRS and bantam patchbays... P.S. I didn't watch the whole video.
EXACTLY!!! That's all I've been looking for and it's like these guys don't even feel the need to mention it. I want a full explanation then it'll actually make sense.
This video is really good actually but yeah 100% agree regarding the back patching part is sadly always missing. Maybe because it's just a sum of cables connections..
That's because the front of the patchbay is a mirror of the back, so there's no need to show the back to understand. When the front says Preamp Out 1 (top row), it means that the corresponding connector in the back is where the Preamp Out 1 is plugged in. Same for compressor, etc... So, no need to show the back since you see the same thing on the front panel. I think he explains it very very well. He did a wonderful job!
Great tutorial. I've already started setting up some patch bays at home and most of this I know already. But, when you were explaining half-normal, the idea of having a fall back "dry" signal and the experimental "wet" signal, that gave me a bit of a Eureka moment! Had never thought of it that way. Thanks!
Thank you for this video information. I have a question, you said that in half normal I can record two signal, right? So, this means that I can record two signals within the same channel? I don't need channel one for a dry signal and channel two for the wet one? Thank you
hey man thanks a lot for the video! I'm still confused tho.. could you maybe tell me pls where I put the outs of my compressor and the ins so I could connect to it from the front?
Thank you for the explanation one aspect about connecting leads you didn’t mention im unsure of. I can see you are using leads with two rings is that because they are trs balanced or because they send stereo signals. I’m pretty much never using mics or guitar, just synths, all connections I need are stereo. Is there a difference if you are using stereo signals. Or another way to put it is do you have to double all the connections to send both l&r or are patchbays normally stereo channels? Thank you.
You can get unbalanced or balanced patch bays. I would think balanced or trs would work for you in stereo. I dont think I would mix stereo and trs on the same patchbay though. TRS carries duplicate signal and will boost by 6db
Hey guys how do I setup a reverb unit, sending the signal to vocal booth and at the same recording the dry signal? My vocalist just wants to hear his voice with reverb during recording and on my side I’d only record the dry signal when he is singing into my interface
im still so confused. 1:50 It's just magically a part of his audio chain and i have no idea how it's actually hooked up. I have no idea what a patchbay is or does and I still have no idea.
Hi. 🙂 Please, let us pray together. Dear God who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever in Jesus Christ's name we pray amen. 1 Corinthians 16:14 Let all that you do be done in love. Philippians 4:19 And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 1:2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. May all suffering end as we give thanks this day. May God's face shine upon us forever on Earth as it is in Heaven in Jesus Christ's name we pray for His name and for His sake. Amen.
This waterfall chat has helped me understand so much easier thank you !!
Best tutorial on patch-bays by far. Waterfall analogy helps it stick
Wow you’ve seen some baaaaaaad patchbay vids.
M Thomas there’s a lot out there, why you here watching then?
Just started audio engineering school, they introduced us to Patchbays today and it was over my head. This helped more than anything I’ve read or watched!
This the easiest explanation so far, thank you
Praise God I finally understand... Easiest tutorial on patch bays I've found yet! Thanks!!!

Do you have any videos you can recommend please..?

Haha seriously, the front is easy but if you're trying to build your own patch bay there's no tutorials.
THE BEST DAMN VIDEO. You said the words “PARALLEL Processing” and it CLICKED in my head 🙈 I was so mistaken in my routing
This is exactly what the world needs now: simple explanations....and of course Love:)
I guess this is the best patchbay tutorial in the web. Congratulations (and thanks a lot)
Definitely the best explanation of Patchbay basics. Thanks
Great tutorial. I've already started setting up some patch bays at home and most of this I know already. But, when you were explaining half-normal, the idea of having a fall back "dry" signal and the experimental "wet" signal, that gave me a bit of a Eureka moment! Had never thought of it that way. A very clear explanation of Normal and Half Normal. I finally get it, thanks. :-)
One of the best (Most understandable) Patchbay explanation I've watch so far. Thank you.
Thanks for taking a complex concept and breaking it down.
most helpful ever. all lessons need metaphor imagery!!
Nice video!
Absolutely the best patch bay tutorial on TH-cam! If I have questions regarding hooking up a PA etc. Can I call you?
best explanation Thank you
Thanks for this, actually got the hang of it now! Might get a patch bay and try it out
Finally a clear description complete with a solid relatable metaphor! Thank you
One of the best on this topic.
Best explanation yet. Thanks
Best tutorial on patchbays ! thank you
That was explained extremely well.
Should I run half normalled for my API lunch box set up back into discreet 8
Excellent descriptions...I also think in metaphors and this finally allowed me to get it. Thank you!
My gawd can't believe that this is the video that did it ...wow after 100s of vedis...thanx guy
This was most helpful. Just purchased a patchbay
Best tutorial! Not confusing at all!! Thanks a lot!
Nice explanation. Thanks!
Very good explained wow
Incredibly well done video!
Thank god for this man
Great video!
Now I'm wondering how to you actually hook the patch bay up to your interface or how does it work?
Just bought a Focusrite Scarlett 18I20 3rd gen from your store, made a short video of tracking drums and how great the pre amps sound.
Thank you for this video information. I have a question, you said that in half normal I can record two signal, right? So, this means that I can record two signals within the same channel? I don't need channel one for a dry signal and channel two for the wet one? Thank you
I love my patchbay...so much beautiful colours.
hey man thanks a lot for the video! I'm still confused tho.. could you maybe tell me pls where I put the outs of my compressor and the ins so I could connect to it from the front?
Explained really well. This training made every other video feel like Chinese lol thank you!!
Nice to see you here. Used to watch your videos 6-7 years ago as I was FL Studio user.
How might you connect a bunch of microphone XLR cables into the patchbay? Like are there ports or something for mic arrays?
such a nice explanation!!!
Thank you for the explanation one aspect about connecting leads you didn’t mention im unsure of. Does splitting the signal in a half normalled setup affect impedance?
You should be a teacher thank u so much
Everyone shows the front side! How do things wire up on the BACK side? Is it out to out abd in to in (like an effects loop), or is it out to in?
i wanna talk to a pro... so, what are you wearing under?
nah really, good explanation, trying to hookup my patchbabes proper.
Is it input or insert of interface from out of the compressor?
Thank you soooooo much!
Hey guys how do I setup a reverb unit, sending the signal to vocal booth and at the same recording the dry signal? My vocalist just wants to hear his voice with reverb during recording and on my side I’d only record the dry signal when he is singing into my interface
when is best to use xlr patchbays?
Where can I find the song playing in the back?
witch size of patchbay its ??? tt its clear . but the name of your patchbay pannels
im still so confused. 1:50 It's just magically a part of his audio chain and i have no idea how it's actually hooked up. I have no idea what a patchbay is or does and I still have no idea.
what about thru mode ?
This is a super noob question, but can you plug a mic directly into a patchbay and send it to a preamp?
Yes, you would want a balanced patchbay and a TRS cable. Like a female XLR to TRS 1/4" cable.
@@themagicalducklings Thanks!
which boat do i take to make my snares less $hitt@?
i have no idea what this is and i have an exam about it in a few hours
Is this required in today’s recording studios?
Most likely not with the abundance of plug-ins that do everything now.
Din't know Bill S Preston, Esquire ran a studio......
He didn't mention the back of the patchbay AT ALL....
LYNYRD SKYNYRD Captain William Edward Schlegel 111
This is hilarious
I made it a third thru before the background muzak made me kill my family. I’m looking for Fido ."..

Why do we need to hear background music together with your instructions? Annoying and disturbing only.
I'm sorry but this shit made no sense.
