After over 2 years, I finally decided to start working on a new solo machine project earlier this year. The "Mouse Trap" theme originated from a video call Lyle (jackofallspades98) and I were having in which he suggested the idea of a machine that improves upon the iconic machine from the game Mouse Trap. I thought this would be an interesting concept for a video, so I paired this idea up with my plans to build an intricate one-table machine (in the style of jackofallspades98) and just like that I had developed the perfect recipe for both success and disaster. This has been one of the most difficult projects I've ever worked on, but after 6 long months, I'm finally ready to show it off to you guys so I hope you enjoy!

Can you sell this as a new board game? Extreme mouse trap?

    • @imveryangryitsnotbutter

Have you ever played the original Mouse Trap? The contraption didn't go off properly most of the time, because the pieces were usually not aligned quite right. Extreme Mouse Trap would be even worse.

Only a matter of time before the game companies start asking you to mass-produce this...
Seriously, this is incredible. I have no idea how you outdo yourself EVERY TIME!
One of the first things I noticed was that in this machine, every object was used to its fullest potential. In other words, every trick was "spiced up" as much as it could have been. Consider the trick at 0:44 for example. It would be cool enough to have the cheese pieces fit together to create a track for the ball, but then you open the pieces up so a marble could use the cheese pieces for a zigzag. Almost every single trick in the machine follows that format, and considering how compact the machine was, that's really impressive. Some tricks were even moved, rotated, or flipped 3 or 4 times! It's the little details like this that make your projects so entertaining.
Simply put, AMAZING machine, you will always be a top machine artist in the community!

The way you turn the original game of mouse trap into a whole machine that gets 0 dislikes Joel, I believe that's the most impressive machine you've made so far. The most interesting parts of the machine are:
    1. How you used all the parts of the original game (almost).
    2. How you use cheese wedges to make to make a path for a ball, and use those same cheese wedges to make a zigzag path for a marble.
Now I've actually designed a lot of chain reactions involving that same game, but again, this is by far the best chain reaction I've seen so far. This definitely deserves a like.

  • @efdomino5325
    @efdomino5325 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Wow. This is one of the best machines I've seen in a very long time, if not ever. Everything about this video is just astounding. You've created the perfect example of a machine that's amazingly intricate and clever without sacrificing the ability to understand most of what's going on when watching at regular speed, which, might I add, still doesn't take away from me wanting to watch it over and over again! I don't know how you come up with some of these multi-use elements, but I seriously admire the creativity behind them and the ability to make all of the motions so smooth. Not only are your machines creative, complex, and brilliantly designed, but they're all so accessible to people of all experience levels given how well everything is displayed and filmed. Simply revolutionary.

  • @jackofallspades98
    @jackofallspades98 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

One of the most painful experiences in recent memory was seeing the notification for this video but not being able to watch it until we filmed later that night. I had such high expectations for this machine, considering I probably knew the most about it out of anyone. This machine certainly lived up to (and surpassed) my expectations for what it could be. Of course this machine is comprised of no shortage of insanely brilliant tricks and feats of motion that only a master chain reaction artist like yourself could ever create. But we've come to expect that from you by now (and honestly, we're still blown away). What IS new, however, is your increased focus on interesting nonlinear pathing, and a seamless flow from one element of the machine into the next. As you said, this was your effort to imitate my style of machine building, so I was beyond curious to see how well you were able to pull that off, and what your style would look like blended with those elements of my style. The result is a machine with a labyrinthine sequence of motion that still feels cohesive and understandable. As several commenters have said already, there isn't a single moving element of this machine that has only a single use. Every ball is used in multiple tricks, every track rotates or tilts, every lever serves multiple purposes. Despite being inspired by my style of building, what you've accomplished in this machine is far beyond the bounds of what I'm capable of. In fact, it's far beyond the bounds of what any person on the globe is capable of. The way you were able to manage each and every one of those miniature Mouse Trap parts is a talent unmatchable by anyone else. This is, without a doubt, my favorite machine of yours, and probably my favorite video as well. You put a lot of work into this, and you should be proud of yourself. I'm certainly proud of you. :)

You trigger so many things with strings and potential energy, but it looks so precise and careful! Also I think its super oddly satisfying that the whole things is about as compact as it feasibly could be given its complexity.

Honestly, there's so much I have to say about this machine - truly one of the best full-length machines I've watched all year - but what I think best sums it up is this:
This machine has immense replay value, especially for someone like me who loves getting engrossed in the details. There are so many subtle multi-uses, hidden elements that play a vital role, and clever paths to unpack; so many specialized mechanisms, fine-tuned motions, and objects whose physical properties are uniquely suited to the way they are used. Every time I watch this video, I will notice something new, something clever that I missed on *all* of my previous viewings. Most professionally produced films don't even have that kind of replay value!
A couple other things: I loved the tight integration of Mousetrap elements (they were so naturally integrated into the machine that at first I barely noticed it), and I'm continually impressed by how you work with transferring impulse without being too reliant on height.
This is honestly a work of art. Well done, as always!

Amazing machine as always, this is a fantastic concept as well for a machine. I also appreciate the effort to still make it recognizable as a variation of the original mousetrap.
My favorite tricks are the sequences at 0:54 and 1:28. Both excellent combinations of foreign objects and multi use.
Another thing I appreciate is how small scale your tricks are, makes them even more impressive for me. Again great job on this machine!

I never left a real comment on this before because I would have absolutely no clue where to start in picking apart this madness and trying to put it into words. A few things I'll mention though, bear with my wording...
It's seriously pretty magical how you can make every single track and object be used in so many different ways at many times while still making every connection very neat and flow really well in a mechanical harmony so complex and complete. No connections feel out of place, and it's like designing a city with streets and businesses and places laid out so precisely in a way that congested traffic is an impossibility and vehicles flow like it's some utopian society where everything just fits into place exactly- that's what it feels like you're doing, and why I say that what you do is magic
Also, I think the theme of Mouse Trap was incorporated really nicely - like the elements from the game were very recognizable and the machine as a whole had a very mousetrap kind of feel in its movements and how it neatly mixes in lots of small-scale swingy, turny and flippy motions.
There's definitely a lot more to say about this machine but that would physically exhaust my fingers and mind to write all that. Your best work in my opinion; great job

    This machine is absolutely insane!
I really enjoyed the idea of upgrading the classic mouse trap game by incorporating the mouse trap pieces with your amazing building style! The compactness and length of the machine was extremely impressive because you had an incredible amount of multi use tricks.
    My favorite tricks included:
-The first trick because of its super clean motion and how it was multi use (I also like how you use the starting crank from the actual game to start of the machine).
-The trick at 0:44 also really stood out to me because of how creative yet simple it was.
0:54 was absolutely madness, the way you managed to reuse that simple piece is just beyond me.
1:29 was another example of a very unexpected multi use trick because of how the platform gets lifted up making room for the marble staircase to do its double motion.
Also, It was nice to meet you at Reactica and hope you make more full length machines in the future! ;)
P.s. How many takes did this machine have? And what editor do you use?

    • @joelsinventions

TheContraptionKing Thank you so much! I don’t know the exact number of takes because I deleted all the ones I had filmed about halfway through, but if I had to estimate I would definitely say it’s well passed the 100 fail mark and probably around 150. I use power director 16 to edit but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it because it can get glitchy every once in a while
