There was a similar incident in end 1986 when the Israeli president visited Singapore. Malaysia and Indonesia were protesting about it and deployed troops to the areas nearest to Singapore in another 'excerise'. I was in RSAF then and we were all recalled back and stayed in the airbase for about a week, sleeping beside fully armed fighterjets.
We do need SAF to deter aggression.
Yes, I was on my way to Australia from Penang on SQ when someone called up the airport and said that a bomb was planted on the plane departing Penang!

Great content. In case it seems like my comments below are critical, that is not my intent. Just wanted to add some info.
1:17, reasons why Singapore saw this wargame as a threat. To add: (4) Lack of notification. When countries conduct wargames, they would, as a matter of courtesy and prudence, inform their neighbours so that the neighbour would not be unduly worried, or respond inappropriately (like launch a counter attack). Malaysia did not inform Singapore. Interestingly, Indonesia let slip the information to Singapore. Which was nice of them. (5) 2:05 "The purpose of the exercise was to test the response of Malaysia and Indonesia in case a neighbouring country turned hostile." Hmmm.... I wonder which neighbouring country might they mean? Those dastardly Filipinos? The cunning Thais? Surely, they cannot mean sweet, innocent little Singapore? Oh but they left Singapore out of the wargame. That's telling.... I THINK THEY MEANT SINGAPORE! (6) New PM. In 1991 Goh Chok Tong had just taken over from Lee Kuan Yew as PM of Singapore. Meanwhile in Malaysia, Mahathir was still holding onto power and trying to catch up with Singapore/Lee Kuan Yew. While Lee Kuan Yew was PM, Mahathir would NEVER have tried to do a "Pukul Habis" or he would be the one to "habis". BUT.... with a new PM.... Mahathir (or Malaysia) wanted to test the new PM. See if he was as tough as LKY... Two things might happen. One, Goh Chok Tong panics and attacks Malaysia, or Two, Goh Chok Tong folds under pressure and LKY has to step back up as PM. Unfortunately (for Mahathir), PM Goh got advice from his generals and his ministers. And I suspect classified intelligence briefing as to the real intent of the wargames. PM Goh would be right to be reasonably sure that no attack is imminent, and that it was just an attempt to startle us. But he also went with his generals' advice to conduct mobilisation.
National Day was a particularly vulnerable time for Singapore. The entire govt was gathered in one place. Singapore is small, and the site of the wargame was just minutes away by jet fighters. A consolidated attack could wipe out our entire govt. I am sure there were contingency plans for evacuating the Ministers in case of an attack, and emergency bomb shelters or makeshift shelters and evacuation plans.
1991 was a particularly "vulnerable" or uncertain year. LKY had handed over PMship to GCT, and this was the formal stepping down of our founding PM. Questions as to the continued viability of Singapore was pertinent. If Malaysia's wargame had panicked GCT into attacking Malaysia the premise of the wargame (at 2:05) "in case a neighbouring country turned hostile" would have been proven and given Malaysia the excuse to counter-attack and possibly re-take Singapore and maybe merge Singapore back into the Federation. At least in the Malaysian military's estimation.
On the other hand, if GCT had a meltdown and LKY had to step back up, that would also have been humiliating and throw Singapore's viability and desirability as a investment destination into question. And Malaysia would also win.
But neither of Malaysia's best and second best scenario emerged. PM Goh did not panic or fall to pieces. Singapore responded professionally, resolutely, and with commendable restraint. In the aftermath, there were some scoffing remarks from Malaysia about why Singapore "panicked" and had a mobilisation. IIRC, PM Goh said something along the lines of "I was not worried, but my generals advise that we should have a mobilisation, as a matter of prudence. So we did. I trust the Malaysians, but I pay my generals a lot, so I should listen to them."

A beautiful and concise address to the matter. Totally agreed. National defense is not a joke, a lot of people fail to realize is that you don't play dice with the lives of those you love. If there's any threat, even a 0.01%, you seriously consider your options.
Singapore's greatest strength IMO is the pragmatism and common sense of its leaders, especially since common sense isn't so common these days.

An excellent comment to a surprising clip revealing the "real" nature of regional relations. Nevertheless, it is a surprise because despite the routinely circulating national security threats myths, at the public level, the relations between these states, at the elite levels, as structurally underpined in informal, multi-track and softpower terms do not meaningfully give rise to any true alarm. Most of the key formal and informal leaders in the region are wedded to mutually-rewarding interests to allow the outbreak of any real hostilities between them. For the elites, like the Rothschilds at the global level, they will allow the tensions to burst out into hostilities only if they can multiply their private profits at the cost and miseries of their larger publics. Given the present regional realities this is not due yet !

That year in 1991 I was in the army. We have major exercise almost every month. At that time I was wondering why we keep going for military exercises so often. We trained so hard until we all believe we can really fight well together. Now this video answered my question already. I wonder today Singapore soldiers train that hard anymore.

YG thank you for sharing this piece of history with us. This event in 1991 was very real. I would say that it was also a wake up call for many who did not believe in national defense back then. Today, Singapore has one of the most capable and modernize Army, Navy and Air Force in the region. All combined, they can punch well above their weight. Love to see and follow the progress. Respect and admiration from an Army vet. 👍❤

When the conflict happened, my unit was on 4NTM standby. An encik explained the situation to us (malay drivers) so that we had a better understanding and we are not betraying our own race/religion. Our job was to deliver live ammunition to the "G" unit. I genuinely think what that encik did was necessary. What the Malaysian navy did was wrong. The percentage of being activated was 80% because our commandos had already infiltrated the borders. We were lucky that the diplomatic solution went smooth. For a malay soldier in the SAF, yes it's difficult for us, but we won't stand for something that is wrong.

Thank you. There will still be naifs who think this was over-reaction (on the part of Singapore). It was actually, very restrained and just enough to signal our resolve. Seriously, our leaders DID NOT BELIEVE that an attack was imminent. But in military defence, one does not act based on what one THINKS the other will do, but what the other CAN do. And our mobilisation sent a signal to the Malaysian leaders. And the message was received loud and clear. The Encik did his job. As did you. Thank you.

I totally agree war would be bad, and yes I also got relatives in Malaysia. If it was Johor vs Singapore, I'd have no worries because both sides know how stupid it is but KL is so far away that the people making the decisions might not "feel" how bad the situation can become because they are so far away and their priorities are different than the normal people's. I mean, if they are going to lose the next election, won't creating an external enemy look like an easy solution to them? Interesting video! I was in one of the activated units at this time. In 1991, mobile phones didn't exist then - the silent mobilisation was done with pagers, issued to officers and 'detachment ICs'. These ICs were issued contact lists to call individual soldiers to mobilise them.
Those questioned about the need for Sg to have a strong defend forces only need to look at Switzerland and also remember the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq.

I was mobilise during NDP 1991, I still remembered the many RBS70 teams deployed. They could have taken down any surprise airborne attacks by planes or Helis. We had layered defence even then. Our neighbours has always underestimated the little red dot and they still do till today.

Yes, if set the rear sight right. The M16S1 will become a 30 round sniper rifle. Super markmanship,no need scope one. Can hit whatever you aim. Scope makes thing more complicated.

Yes, Singapore was having some tensions with the then malaysia Gov in 1999 as they threaten to do an act of war to cut the water supply to Singapore letting Singaporeans die. This triggers all standby units from the Singapore infantry,armour,artillery, Air force and navy to be ready for war waiting for the green light to attack them. Those were the crazy hostility days where every guy standing by for a fight.
Back in the olden days,when a young adult conscript soldier issue with a M16. The responsibility was huge ,where many were forced to swear serving the nation,to protect honour and independence of his country. To give up his life in war to deal with enemy, that makes us slightly different from other military.
There were issues with malaysia back then in terms of economy unbalance, currency exchange rates and prosperity of Singapore. The relationship with malaysia now is much more better now where Singaporeans can go malaysia for short tour over the weekend. It is small relaxation tour visiting another country anyway. The SGD value is actually close USD,where you can buy many things in malaysia. Singaporeans tour trip spending in malaysia also plays a small part for the malaysia economy and revenue.
Our regional countries cannot accept our economy performance and may turn enemy any time if relationship turns sour. That is when our good diplomatic relationship will solve all this issues.

Side Note: Not only did the Malaysian and Indonesians not intimidate us, the speed at which we could mobilized our troops actually intimidated the Malaysian military top brass instead. This should serve as a reminder of how vulnerable we are. There were talk by some of the opposition some years back if we maintain a good relationship with our neighbors we don't need to have national service. Thanks to Mahathir regaining PMship of Malaysia a while back, this naïve thinking has since disappear

Agreed. The 2 hour mobilization shocked others as it displayed the organizational effectiveness of our forces against theirs, who need days to mobilize. We will get the first strike in, and with our tech, hit obscenely hard, maybe even giving an irrecoverable blow while buying ourselves time for our allies and our own assets in foreign lands to be deployed.
Don't get me wrong, I don't want war, but I would like my family to be safe, and am willing to fight and die for that.

This is real. I was in the Air Force but I was stationed in US. We were told to be prepared to deploy with our full assets. All aircraft were prepared to fly back with configuration for long distance flying. Our commander briefing was a short but tense one. But we are ready to be deployed within 12hours.
Eventually, we stand down after National day.
It was only after we stand down, we knew that every military personal and every assets in Singapore was put on high alert, with fully armed weapons on army, navy and air force. At that time, our air force is still flying the F5s, A4s and the older F16s..
More than 20yrs pasted, we moved from defense to offensive. Our F15s, F16CD and F16D+ aircraft are not for defending…….even those in the air force doesn’t know what are those equipment inside the dosel of F16Ds….
It’s always a reminder that we have to be prepared against anyone and anytime.

Another chilling fact to further proves that the military exercise by Msia and Indo was a direct threat to SG was the training area they used had a very high resemblance to the HDB buildings you can find all around SG.

It was also a violation of the defence treaty between Sg and My that either party must be given 6 months' notice of any major troop exercises within certain geographical boundaries, in My's case, it would be exercises in Johor. Yes, decades have passed but they are no less belligerent, but they are no longer so strong. And thanks to them we now have fighters on patrol 24/7 so slim chances of them trying to send paras into Sg - they will die quickly and SAF will be in Johor hours after that.
With submarine allergic to water, missing fighter jet engine awol in Thailand , naval ships more than 40 years old, paid 5 naval ships being absent . . . Sinkies can relax a bit . . .

Such issues are indeed covered by books and the media (mostly in Malay), you just need to look in the right places.
Malindo Darsasa exercises are still carried out a few times and reported publicly. Maybe your circle of people are ignorant to defence and armed forces related issues hence this is unknown to you. I don't blame you tho, unlike SG most people in Malaysia care less on such issues.

@@edmundtaiping its seem to be just normal training. Where and when is controversial because it CAN be perceive to be hostile action. But ultimately not realy important since barely a fraction of Malaysia army was involve.
If it was not training and indeed a full scale war. Pretty sure the amount of troop "training" should not be less than sigapore army size. Air, navy and armour should be involve with "training". But they didn't.

Also, it was Goh Chok Tong’s first year and first NDP as Prime Minister. It would have been a test to the new PM and to send a message/reminder of Singapore being the little brother not only in size and in terms of number of years as an independent country but also then in terms of having the most junior leader.
Thankfully Singapore’s response was not lacking. News of the joint exercise was already making its rounds in the public domain and I believe the NDP celebrations that year were more rousing due to this.
That time I only ROD less than 1 year and saw my open mob call sign flashed on TV. When I reported back to camp the storeman already standby our SBO, Helmet and weapon then we loaded live ammo onto 3 tonners and left. Worst part came after we stand down. All live rounds need to be accounted and all weapons need to be cleaned and oiled.
Yes, no joke one. Even more serious than the transformer movie megatron mobilize. It is like the Israel 6 days war, fully mobilized. Live round ,FBO up the tonner. That is why most unit counters or buildings have straight lines on the floor for mobilization use.

Yup this one one i know since my former form teacher back in my secondary school time told us. Back in 1991 everything was in high tension but after the national day and this exercise. Our former late Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew did travel to Malaysia, KL to talk to the Malaysia counterpart about this issue. Hence both party in the end have a peaceful negotiation ending for it.

I roughly remember it when I was quite young at that time, that the codes were flashed on tele for almost whole day as well as reminder from radio station and also will heard neighbours asking each other whether their son is been called-up, reminding each other of the called-up. Then my parents were guessing whether is singapore under attack cause of the constant called-up. It wasn't openly announce what happen but I guess adults have rough ideas what happen.

This was just one of the incidents happened in SG. There were a handful more occurred even close to our "Missile Hill" where foreign Special Forces conducted reconnaissance ops in the vicinity. They were observing but we spotted them too right under our "radar". To-date, they had been "performing" non-military observations and espionage ops as a pretext to learn our strategic operations. Our neighbours DO NOT fear the SG Army; they fear our Air Force & Navy which is much more superior than their own.
The other ending of this same story i heard was these operators managed to sneak in, replace the flag with their own on the base commander's table, and fled. Exaggeration but hell, it keeps us awake during sentry duty. Lol.

For nearly 50 years now, the Malaysian government have been inviting Singapore's RSAF to fly over the whole of Malaysia during Malaysia's Merdeka Day as even such simple feats are not possible for them because of the military scandal a few years ago involving the sudden disappearance of 58 engines for their fighter jets just vanished into the thin air. Leaving only 4 flyable ones and even those are facing maintenance issues as mentioned by the Malaysian Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu in August 2018.

My uncle was in a armour unit that was activated then. Initially he was pissed off to get call up on a national holiday. Went back to camp to draw weapons, draw armoured vehicles and draw ammunition. He said in all his years in NS and Reserve, he has never seen so much ammunition being drawn out and loaded into the armoured vehicles. He really thought something might just happened that night. As a fellow NS man, we all will complain about ICT etc. But I know deep down, every man wearing that uniform knows the importance of what we are doing but we hope we never have to use what have been trained to do.
I remembered this incident, there were 5000 troops stationed across our borders and our artillery were pointing at them... They protested we didn't trust them haha wasted holiday for me
On that day itself, I was an active NS man in 21SA. 3 tonners was dispatch to load up with live bomb to our camp. Never before had such mission carry out in our NS life. Many didn't know what is happening, our officer didn't say anything if I didn't remembered wrongly but I knew it then as I like to read newspaper.

I was attending a Route of Advancement course and my cohort had a tour visit in one of the Army Camp. We were briefed on this history and what to expect if there is another large-scale mobilisation in the future for my relevant vocations. I hope the day will never come when I needs to plan and execute Warning Orders for similar large-scale mobilisation.

During 2016 (and a few other times), the Sultan of Johor requested for more water to be sold to them (the amount was way more than agreed upon in the agreement), SG complied without a second word and it was sold at the same price without asking for more (still sold the "extra" treated water at a lost).

Majidee camp & PULADA must be located near the Malaysia border for her safety/safeguard (including Singapore was back then). Once Singapore departed, she felt the Majidee/PULADA as a threat point although the camps existed before the separation. Worry too much/phobia is one of the sign of not-so-hidden prejudice. Not the first time in the eighties we are at defcon 2. Reservist were deployed at the northern coast will live ammo and artillery were deployed. This was due to Malaysian protested again singapore because of Malaysia politians selfishness

There's another incident in 1999/2000. We were activated and nearly moved out. All live rounds are drawn even tank rounds. New weapons are drawn as well. We were not briefed. Just waiting to move out. Months later then we know from a source that Malaysia threaten to cut off our water supply.
