  • Wanted to see if I could take a spare Bushman Cedartone Concert Ukulele I had and use it to play bluegrass/Irish music in GDAE tuning rather than the standard ukulele tuning of GCEA. Found some Aquila strings on Amazon made for a soprano uke and tuned to GDAE and ordered them and put them on the Bushman uke. Here is the result. Think it came out pretty good!

    Better yet use 20 lb test fishing line for the high E. Works and sounds even better than the Aquila string for me.

    Nicely done. The songs and tunes were enjoyed. Thanks for sharing them. I went ahead and ordered the strings - your clip really provided useful information. Thanks again. Chhers

    That sounds great! I've been wanting to convert one of my ukes to this tuning so I can practice when I travel. Thanks.

    Just what I was looking for! I bought my grand-nephew a uke a few years ago and he never plays it. I tried to get him to play my Martin mando now that he is 6 and he can barely press the strings down. I'll buy some of those strings and teach him to play mandolin tunes on his uke.

    Sounds surprisingly like a mandolin with steel strings! And your playing is very good, too--don't apologize!

    • @juliuschas
      @juliuschas 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not as loud as steel strings....so it's better for practicing between thin walls or when the family is asleep!

    Very good job my friend! I enjoy playing bluegrass as well and this is a great way to do it. Simple, and fun. Two keys to great music.

    This is an awesome idea! I have 2 mandolins but I am primarily a guitar player and playing the mandolin for long kills my wrist.

    It is amazing you was able to tune it GDAE. I have a concert ukulele and its vibrating lenght is 38,5cm, but at Aquila Strings they said that their Soprano Fifths Mute (GDAE as a mandolin) is intended for the soprano ukulele which has a shorter scale, and that the Fifths Mute (suitable for the concert ukulele) gives the viola-mandola tuning of CGDA. Can you tell me how long is the vibrating lenght of your instrument and what mute of strings you mounted on it? Thanks

    Sounds great. I have a tenor Gold Tone banjolele that I'd like to tune GCEA since I've been learning the fiddle and starting to play mandolin. Enjoyed your singing too.

      Mandolin and violin are tuned GDAE which gives more notes.

    Exactly what I was looking for, thanks! I have a concert uke I don't use (been playing guitar) and was wondering if I'd be good at mando since my hands are so small. I will order those strings and give this a try!

    Hello, I want to tune my ukulele as a mandolin. Can you tell me exactly which strings used? Thanks.

    Hi. Did you find that you broke strings at all w/ this set up? That is, the all fifths soprano Aquila strings put on a concert uke. Was the tension too much or fine? I've heard of some folks using 20lb or so fishing line for the high E.

    • @greadore
      @greadore  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, no I never had an issue with strings breaking.

  • @peterforrest3424

    Fantastic i had same problem with a hundred pound mandolin and e string kept breaking so i put uke strings on it but it dont sound great when strummed but i have a uke i with try what you have done.

  • @peeweeuke

    Thanks for this demo, it does sound surprisingly good! Does the string tension feel very high? Is it something you would hesitate to do with a more delicate uke? Your voice and singing sound good to me - swallowtail jig even! I've been eyeballing the switch from uke to mando, this seems like an easy way to mess around with 5ths tuning, just as you are, to play fiddle tunes. I don't want to break any ukes though.

    • @greadore
      @greadore  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The string tension is somewhat high but I assume if they work on a soprano they would be fine on a concert uke. It is a great and easy way to play fiddle tunes and bluegrass.

    Do you believe the same strings you used would work well on a Tenor Ukulele?

    i play the violin. this is best option to start in ukelele? I will have advantage with this tuning?
    The chords are easy Or is it better than standard gcea for chords?

    • @healthymovementstaichi1115
      @healthymovementstaichi1115 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the ukulele chords are easier to learn and play. If you want to play the ukulele I'd suggest learning the ukulele chords in GCEA.

    Just because you tune your ukulele like a mandolin doesn’t make it a mandolin ukulele!
