  • Our story continues with Willa's first few days experiencing German Kita (daycare). Risa tags along for a few days to get Willa more accustomed to the new space and people she (Willa) will be around. To our surprise, the teacher/aides at the Kita say that they think she is ready to start going by herself only after two days!? This entire experience has been great so far and we are excited for Willa to continue to grow, make friends, and begin learning German. We hope all of adjust well to the new change of pace that is about to come!

    I work at a kita in germany and we take kids that just turned one. Often those kids need like a month or more to feel comfortable with us, we try to be very senstive but for some kids its easy and others need a little bit more time. We have one child that cries everyday when her parents leave in the morning and as soon as the door closes she plays for the rest of the day happily. Its difficullt to make the parents understand that shes actually happy in our kita but we always try to reassure them.
    So I just want to say that even if the valediction is sometimes hard I am sure Willa still has an amazing day with all those toys in the kita. :)

    hey guys! I’m currently studying to become a kita-teacher (erzieherin). It’s totally normal to be emotional about your kiddo starting kita - some parents even have a little cry after dropping them off. the staff working in kita are usually very experienced with this (in bavaria the course to becoming an erzieherin is 5 years!). good luck with your journey :)

    My degree is in Child Development and I was so impressed with the German preschool/day care my three grandchildren attended. Lots of outside time, developmentally appropriate inside activities, and no push to do academics like in the USA.
    The youngest is is in third grade now. He tells his mom her German sounds funny. She still has her American accent, while his dad is a German national. Praying the Covid test will not be needed.

    A new chapter of live just starting. I can imagine the overwhelmig feelings as a parent to give your child to "strangers" at the kita, its nothing wrong with that. Just be proud of yourself. There even might be a day or two after the first two weeks in kita, when Willa will miss you that much that she can't calm down and you might get a call from the aid. But thats normal for all kids, so nothing to worry about.
    Fast forward a year or two and Willa will teach you German pronounciation. 🤣

    Every mother will go through this emotional separation on the first day of kindergarten, it's perfectly natural. But you now have the spring to look forward to and as the weather gets warmer, Willa and her little friends will be able to play outside much more without the hindrance of bulky coats and gloves. Then the kids will be in their element as they run, jump and climb everywhere. Be prepared for some litte scrapes! But very young children are extremely resilient - they're made that way - so a hug and a plaster will be all that's needed to stop the tears. Unlike adults, kids can't anticipate that it will hurt if they run full tilt into a tree trunk. But they learn fast!
    I would love to watch more of Willa's new experiences over the coming weeks and months, but you will want to show us more of your own discoveries and culinary delights as well. Maybe organise a small party at home for Willa and her Kita friends. That will give you the chance to meet other parents, who would have to be there, too.

I thought I could give her a hug and a kiss on the cheek goodbye, but nothing. I was just able to take off her hat and jacket when her little friend called in the background and the little mouse was gone. I had tears in my eyes. I wasn't prepared for that.

    1. What a wholesome story/vlog.
    2. Lunchbox: don't overthink it too much. I think you got a pretty decent one for Willa. One big and 3 small departments and it still fits in a child's backpack.
    3. Second guessing oneself is okay, as long as you come to the right conclusions. From an outside perspective i would say you are doing perfectly fine. Tearing up for letting her go on her own for a while means you care for your kid. And Willa sometimes tear up at the KiTa but getting back to play soon after is perfect because it shows that she cares for you too (good parenting) but also she is ready to make friends, socialize and play with others (also comes back to decent parenting).
    4. I just realized i am a little late to the game, but i keept it here because it kinda still applies.

Wonderful for her, difficult for mom ;) I recommend you look into some classes you might want to take, be it dancing, pottery, language course, a choir or something. Having more time for yourself and editing is great, but it might become pretty lonely with Tanner at work and Willa at Kita. Prioritize your own well being and mental health by doing some fun stuff and interact with other women/moms :)

  • @geneviere199
    @geneviere199 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The typical place to get the boxes actually would be a "Haushaltswarengeschäft" - a little shop in town were you can buy all the things that you need for kitchen and household. A lot of them have been closed in the recent years but each village (if not too small) had one since some years ago. Then there is shops for school- and office supply - often combined with toys - that often have school- and kindergarten bags, too - that usually should have some variety of this boxes, too. Department Stores who offer the whole variety (not just clothes) have them in their stock, too - but you probably only find those in cities. You should find a bigger variety at bigger supermarkets like e.g. Globus. Oh, yes, and online. But - you already have one now. So you have the time and chance to really find a special one for her somewhere in the next months.
    Anti-Rutsch-Socken... Similar case here. Especially in winter you should find them everywhere - and now is winter sales were the shops want to get rid of the winter stuff so even more. Discounters, Supermarkets, Shoe Shops, Tedi etc. - problem is always that you see this stuff a lot when you do not need it - but somehow it is more difficult when you do. In Art and Craft shops or wool shops you can find a product called Sock-Stop with which you can yourself prepare "normal socks" to not slide. If you are knitting you could even think about doing felted socks or little shoes yourself - that only takes an evening of knitting and you get really personal ones that you can decorate the way you want. There is instructions and how-to-videos on many websites - just search for Hausschuhe, Strickfilzen, Kinder

German Kids get raised to be independent pretty early compared to American Kids. Like learning how to handle fire by lighting Candles or using knifes in Kindergarten. Or walking to Kindergarten by themselfs ( if it is not to far and doesnt have big roads, i was around 5y wenn ich startet going alone/with other kids)

    Fun fact: When I was at the age of getting a job or apprenticeship, the job as "Erzieher" (the people working in a Kita) was among the least paid jobs, they are still not being paid a lot but it has gone significantly up since then (I wanted to comment about the low pay, but then I checked and saw it had increased). I had friends going into the field who to work an additional job to support their apprenticeship, something we are/were not used to generally since most of them alerady paid a fair amount during that time (I could afford a little flat/appartment during the third year of my apprenticeship and there were apprenticeships that paid even more than mine). I think people working in a Kita probably are really passionate about that working that job instead of going for higher paying jobs.

    • @Frohds14
      @Frohds14 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The biggest problem with the payment is: there are still thousands of KiTas with very short opening hours. So the employees there never can get a full time job. Another problem is, that the KiFöG (so called in Hesse, might have an other name in BaWü) creates a permanent flowing personal key depending of the age and the needs of the children. So all KiTas need lots of employees who don‘t work full time.

      Now I have watched and listened to Part One of your Kita Experiences and heard that you actually HAVE looked at the supermarket first. And didn't find any lunch boxes... I think this was not a case of Edeka versus Rewe, but rather attributed to size. (So I think you can only find such items in the bigger supermarkets. Although NOW I'm an unsure whether I could find an APPROPRIATE lunch box (I mean: the multicompartment ones you were looking for) in my Rewe. I'm sure they have lunch boxes but I'll try to find out whether they have the RIGHT ones :-)
      And also watching this second sequel for the second time I thought that you had actually quite a good choice at T€DI. I don't like this shop that much that's why I tried to give you some other choices - but the choice was actually better and bigger than I first noticed.
      So, did you find another lunch box for Willa in the end (and where?) or did you just stick with the T€DI one? Lots of love from Northern Germany

    Hi Risa, well as mentioned by Nina there must be Lolly tests available. I never doubt Willa will handle it and as she is open to communicate its easy for her to interact with other kids and because there is always so much to do during her time in the Kindergarten time will fly by. Of course days will come she doesnt like to go into but that will be a short time to struggle with. Risa, why you didnt ask the mum of the other kid where she got her lunch box from ? Dont be to shy to ask, even in english, cos young german parents should be able to understand and response. I think its even hard for you not having her always around, in your sight, in your control just to avoid that things happen to her which will hurt you as well. Dont worry, such a day will come once and you both will overcome the situation. Enjoy your time together. Have a nice coming week. Btw, saw yesterday your vid visiting Munich again and what a big change, big jump Willa did in the meantime. I didnt understood her (d)english speaking, must have been a certain slang, one as similar to all other kids in her age individiualy do :-D

    Really happy to see how excited both of you are. And I am really impressed as for German Kitas your Eingewöhnung seems to happen pretty fast. We weren't allowed to really leave the Kita for at least the first week. My husband had to leave the room for about 10 minutes the third day (and sit in a separate section) and then doubling the time every day so that after about 3 weeks we were officially allowed to finish our Eingewöhnung. And most German parents calculate about a month for a Kita Eingewöhnung (though Kindergarten from age 3 on goes way faster fortunately). And even after that there are alway going to be ups and downs but it's going to get a lot easier as soon as the kids really understand what's happing and know all the routines (and especially the language). Now I hope that your Kita won't be affected by too many Covid infections in the time to come and that you all can enjoy your new daily life!

    I remember it......the first day of leaving my child allen in the Kita ....for both of my kids.....they are 6 years apart in age....both times I had tears in my eyes sitting alone in the car. This Video brought back some memories. But don' T worry, after a few days it will become easier. By the way, the same will happen when Willa will enter school for the first time, or going in a few days class Trip later on.....my kids are 19 and 25 now 😊❣

    Willa will manage fine, don't worry! She's a real sunshine! Don't forget yourself, you also need friends. Now you have more time to hang out, see stuff, do sports with or have a coffee. Maybe some parents of the other kids are open to that? Most parents in kita groups have organised chat groups, this is also good to stay up to date.

    Ahh, I feel you. One is looking forward to letting one's children go, but then you end up feeling overwhelmed and sad when they take another step out into the world. There is always this strange mixture of happiness and worry. Feeling proud and feeling "not needed". It's going to be the same on the first day of school and maybe if they get their first real report card or when they leave for a school trip, etc. I always get emotional about such things though I am happy about my girls becoming independent and I enjoy my time "alone" very much. And regarding the kindergaten/day care. It can be an up and down for the kids. Most of the days they love it, but there are always days or even weeks in which they want to stay at home and are very "clingy". Thanks for your lovely videos!

    All kids will have days where they are super excited and happy to be in Kita, other days they will cry. For Willa it will be even harder because she also doesn't understand the language. And as difficult it is for you and Tanner, as long as nobody calls you to come to pick her up, let her be, even force you not to call. I know it sounds heartless and cold (it's not, I feel for you), but Willa has to get through that. Later in school (wherever you will be at that time), she will have bad days, and you can't just take her out, just because she is sad. So as long as nobody calls you (and I'm sure those days will come at Kita), try to let it go. They take good care of her. And she will see always the same kids and staff, and she will pick up German in no time. And as soon as she can understand, Willa will nail her Kita time.

    There are bigger supermarkets kinda like Walmart where you get much more general items than just food, including lunch boxes. The brands depend on the region though. I know Kaufland, Marktkauf, Globus, and Real. Another option would be to go to a mall and find the according small shop specialized on those type of items. TED is just one of the shops focussing on selling items cheap. There are shops specialized on items for babies and small children.
    How about you ask the other parents? It's a good thing to bond with them anyway. Your children share the same Kindergarten now and become friends. :)

    German Amazon is easy to use you even can serch with english key words for most things. With lunchbox it should not be a problem.
