That was great. So many memories as a kid playing with my brothers and friends.
I still play it solo on the iPad with many expansions.
But the artwork by Gary Chalk was so inspiring as a kid.

The last game of Talisman I played I drew the Prophetess. Having played the game before, I suggested I redraw in the interest of fairness. The other players demurred, and in short order, I dominated the game....

My original Talisman from the 90s - second edition - is unfortunately lost in the deserts of time. But last year I found a well preserved copy online and bought it without hesitation. Also have a copy of the fourth edition.
But the original illustrations make it so much more enjoyable...

Brilliant video ! I was 19 when I purchased this in 1985 and I also bought all of the expansions and managed to fit all of the expansion components into one box I wish I had kept the separate boxes but it still has pride and joy in my collection. I am looking forward to the 5th edition coming out in the near future

My most favourite game growing up. I remember playing with my sister and friends, some games lasting days. I had the original edition and all the expansions but after one drunken session left them all on the bus! Spent a fortune on ebay getting them all back....

One thing I like more about this version of Talisman over the modern stuff is the art. Yes, the art on the newer versions is nicer, but it's printed on the tiniest cards in all of board gaming (except maybe Eldritch Horror) and the boards should come with their own magnifying glass. The 80s version's simpler art is easier to glance at, easier on the eyes, more fitting for the components, and less distracting from the game. And would probably be cheaper to print.

    • @AgeofInk
      @AgeofInk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Absolutely. In my opinion it is way better than modern, no question

@@AgeofInk YES. Gary Chalk's art is charming and inviting -- he gives me a world I want to explore in Talisman, and quirky characters with which to explore it. The later editions don't evoke that for me.

Was a huge RPG and strategy gamer back in the 80s, somehow I don't recall this game at all. We played D&D, Runequest, a lot of Chaosium games, Dungeon!, Arkham Horror later on,
Call of Cthulhu, Stormbringer, a bit, Magic Realm, and a few other games. A lot of mini games, too, Ogre, GEV, and Illuminati. Someone bought me Traveler in 1982 and I couldn't
for the life of me, figure out how to practically play it, so it just sat there for decades, LOL! I also tried getting a Tekumel campaign going, but nobody I knew had the patience
for that world, and the only group that played it on LI NY I found out, was wayyyy out in Suffolk LI like 2 hours drive! So that didn't happen. Empire of the Petal Throne was
a good game though, and Swords and Glory too, if complex. I always wanted the Elric board game but never seemed to find it reasonably priced.

I agree, something about the art styles of game back in the day really encouraged the imagination and made you want to design your own ideas and games! At least it did for me, I was always trying to come up with games or rule systems back then and I think the art made you feel like you could achieve similar results. Art these days leave less to the imagination i find. To overly produced if that makes sense. Not that it isnt awesome but feels less raw.

    • @AgeofInk
      @AgeofInk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Absolutely, that's it: feels less raw.

I have a second edition, bought in the UK and from an actual Games Workshop store. It does indeed have the better fold out board. I think that GW were probably packaging boards that were produced for 1st ed and the surplus put into 2nd ed. The stores in the UK had a massive sale at one time when they were changing over from a general games shop to just selling GW 40K and Warhammer fantasy and I remember buying bundles of Adventure cards for not a lot of money. Incidentally they were also selling off board games made by them but not related to their usual product line. I bought Railway Rivals and Cosmic Encounters plus others at the time.

I was 11 in 1985. I discovered Talisman in 1987 at age 13 when another friend bought it (we’d been playing D&D for a year or so), and we all fell instantly in love with it. That friend sold it to another friend and he sold it to me (only missing a few chits).
I followed by buying the expansion and then the Dungeon.
(Sadly, I never bought City or Adventure….wish I had).
Over the many decades, I’ve never met anyone who didn’t enjoy playing it! Not kidding at all. Every friend, every girlfriend…and my own daughter…. Everyone loves Talisman 2nd edition!
(I have 3rd and a recent copy…..but you cannot top Chalk’s amazing art plus the slight expansions I have. Love the Shrine and Hobgoblin art the most for some reason!)
    Best fantasy board game ever!!!
It’s a real shame the recent Talisman RPG is such a convoluted mess and not the easy, fast, rules-lite game it ought to and deserves to be!
(But I have the FF clone Spellzard!, RISUS, WhiteBox:Famtastic Medieval Game, D&D B/X, OD&D itself, Tunnels & Trolls, Pits & Perils, much more for such!)
    May Talisman 2ed live forever!

Comme tu le sais, je joue toujours actuellement à la version digitale, développée par Nomad Games. Ça permet de jouer contre l'I.A.

    • @AgeofInk

I would love to get my hands on a board like that. I've adored Gary Chalk's art since devouring Redwall novels as a kid.
Chalk's artwork might come across as rough, sketchy and cartoony, but that's what I love about it. His art has that whimsical, hand made atmosphere that feels like it was inked by a medieval monk. It's a different approach to immersion that sadly is overlooked in favour of "photorealism".

Talisman is better when you change endgame / crown of command into other objective that finishes the game. Simply crown of command isn't this great as endgame imo. But if you create some really cool endgame rule for you and your friends , you can have amazing time playing the game.
