    This is an awesome process Clive. I love how you explore how the old masters prepared the surface.

    Really enjoyed this video. It's always fun to learn about traditional methods used before we could all just run and buy from a shop. 😉

      You can get so much out of making your own as the old masters did it so satisfying

    Hi Clive - Thanks for the video - do you think it would be ok to put the muslin into the rsg and just allow it to absorb?

    Hello, can I coat with rabbit skin glue and gypsum directly on birch plywood and paint with egg tempera without linen, or muslin, or cloth, or other else? I am waiting for answering, thank you very much.

    why muslin? why not simply work on the mdf/masonite surface?

    What if I dont want to use rabbit skin glue, can i just use PVA glue?

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That works just as well..all I’m showing is the traditional method in the video

    Where's the rabbit skin glue applied to canvas sequel after making the rabbit skin glue??? Is rabbit skin glue superior to gesso? I'm most interested in the effects of Van Gogh and the other modernists? Their scintillating brush strokes doen't seem as possible on regular gesso. I think the secret is rabbit skin glue. Right? Gesso is too toothed resulting in brush strokes that don't seem to "float" over the surface of the prior coats of paint. Correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks

    So do the same, although I use lime wood for small panels and birch ply or cradled panels for larger ones.

    Thanks Clive. I have raw linen I want to mount on a board and or maybe stretch it.....so do I stretch first then glue if I am using stretcher bars? And if mounting on a board do I follow your instruction as shown?

      If it's on board I just flatten it out as shown as it dries it shrinks a little if on bars just stretch as normal

    "Don't want anything too clinical or precise, adds character to the back of the canvas..." I call BS, it shows you have a lack of craft or skill- no pride for your own works integrity! Traditional methods were privative, but also had skill involved in the production. For goodness sake- at least spread the glue evenly- it is far better to use a paint roller and get it spread faster and better, at least use a bigger brush! Hell I learned I am an expert after all!

    Mate, great video… just be careful when sanding MDF. Out of all composite boards, MDF is the most toxic due to its high levels of formaldehyde.
