    running a Homebridge server was one of the best decisions I made. Allows me to use Homekit with several devices that aren't homekit enabled. I run it in a docker container on my Synology NAS.

    As someone who is converted his entire house to HomeKit including four HomePods and five HomePod minis and tons of Phillips hue and logitech I strongly recommend Lutron cassetta wireless dimmer switches. No neutral wire is needed and it is one of the best ways to set all of your groups of lights into HomeKit and it saves money on having to buy tons of light bulbs. Easy to install. No electrician needed

    • @cheapme1850
      @cheapme1850 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I looked at Lutron but they were relatively expensive. My house is wired with neutral so that isn’t an issue so I tried Meross switches, bulbs and outlets have been extremely satisfied and was able to do a lot at a much lower price.

    • @allanrscott1130
      @allanrscott1130 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the Lutron are definitely more expensive but having dealt with several different products I can tell you they are absolutely worth it. And I have neutral wires in my boxes as well. you can just Them off and you do not need to use them. These are definitely for people who really love HomeKit. You will need to get the hub as well but I have put in about 30 different switches around my house and it has been so worth it. They never ever fail

      I agree! Lutron Caseta switches are great. A little pricey, but extremely reliable.

    • @ScotTheGr8
      @ScotTheGr8 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will have to switch to Lutron in the future. Using Wemo and they go crazy after a power outage and sometimes after a network outage. But they do have a rock solid dimmer. They also have a three way which is nice but firmware is pretty shaken on it.

      We put the new GEN three blue Tron diva Kaseeta switches throughout the house Jesus what a difference. I think I spent $2600 on the dimmers and switches with the bridge. The three-way configurations were a little bit tricky with a pico or a manual switch, but I rarely adjust on the wall, it was worth every penny and we decided to do the lights at the same time and there were very expensive inserts that went in the ceiling for about five dollars each

    For me, I use Homebridge on my Pi that has a Wyze Cam v2, PS4, and 3rd party RGB light strips. It’s a bit more cheaper and it’s a fun project to do with HomeKit

      1080 is way easier on the net traffic though. Heard compressing 4K currently is processor intensive. Eventually hope 4K can be standard. Still a few technical hurdles like needing dedicated and cheap 4K compression chips to be available.

    For people who put cameras in their homes, I'd love to hear why you do it. Why do you want a camera in your living room or wherever? I can see a nursery, but everywhere else, I'm not getting it.

      @Toolman93 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, for starters, if you have a nursery, eventually you’ll have kids wandering around to different rooms. Being able to keep a “remote” eye on them is invaluable. Also, the ability to easily check on your home while you are away can be very helpful.

    What about the most commonly used doorbells & cameras? When will these be supported?

    • @thankyourob
      @thankyourob 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s really up to the manufacturers to make Homekit enabled cameras. I just switched from a Eufy doorbell - which is a great doorbell that I wish got more focus since they’re more privacy concerned than Ring or Google - also there was a rumor of “Homekit support coming soon” and it never happened. Replaced the Eufy with Logitech Circle doorbell and it is great, if you’re all in on Homekit and have HomePod’s and AppleTVs...and iPhones of course.

      Worth checking your Home Wifi coverage - most problems with HomeKit and this are down spotty coverage in my experience!

    With the smart bulbs, do you ever have a situation where HomeKit says “no response”? I am currently using Wemo plugs, and it tend to happen periodically. Doesn’t happen often but annoying when it does. Wondering if it’s worth the switch to bulbs instead of I don’t care about the color changing feature.

      My hue bulbs come up as no response, it can happen with any device really

    • @ScotTheGr8
      @ScotTheGr8 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree, can happen. Any device. I have found IKEA stuff to be darn solid. Probably due to it using a hub. Their color bulbs are dull but everything is cheap and solid with HomeKit. At least for me.
