The creator's had always planned from the beginning for one of Ben's aliens to be evil, and Ghostfreak is certainly a fitting pick. This episode is...something else I'll say.

This is what the Zombozo episode was technically foreshadowing as even Ben was freaked out of his actions as Ghostfreak in that episode as if he was not in control at all
I always thought it was weird how ben scared Zombozo using the ghost freak tentacle-things and suddenly knew how to do that. Makes a lot more sense now.
Ghostfreak was weirdly sadistic there. The fact that he continued to torment Zombozo when he'd already kinda won, until he (seemingly at that point) literally scared him to death..
Remember how Ben as Ghostfreak defeated Zombozo, by opening his outer layer of skin and scaring the crap out of him? Yeah, now you know what Zombozo saw.
Ghostfreak threatening to make Gwen commit suicide is pretty damn metal for a kids show. Back in the early 2000s, it was PRETTY DARN RARE for a kids show to present any real stakes or any episodes with actual story implications. so, THIS (ignoring the Vilgax fight and the season 2 opener) is one of the first times the show has such a change. it's pretty impressive, even if it's pretty standard these days. it's real cool!
It just occurred to me how dark it was that Ghostfreak basically threatened to make a 10 year old girl jump off a building to her death in a kids show.
Or a 10 years old boy kill Ghostfreak, he is literally alive, this shows how much the old cartoons can be dark in a way, and this is why they are so good.
Now with ghostfreak out of the Omnitrix, this makes Cannonbolt the tenth alien now. Which was the original plan before the creators came up with ghostfreak and pushed Cannonbolt to season 2 as the 11th alien, also fun fact after this episode at somepoint Cannonbolt replaces Ghostfreak in the intro among other changes
There was some fun foreshadowing for this most of it was small and subtle when he does use ghostfeak but was there non the less. I love the idea of ghostfreak's spices keeping their consciousness in one sample of DNA which was stored in the omnitrix. For the other aliens its just a random DNA sample just so happens to be the one aliens can live within the one DNA sample
I just realized that they made a point of having GhostFREAK recruit the Circus FREAKs. It's not exactly subtle or clever, but still, kinda neat. Also, quick note, since Ghostfreak is just the name Ben gave his Ectonurite form, this Ghostfreak does have his own actual name, you just won't hear it for an incredibly long time.
Although if you paid attention to the merchandise that was being released when the Original Series was airing you would’ve found out GhostFreak’s real name much earlier, they even revealed it during Ben 10 weeks when they aired the pop up episodes.

I love this episode. This episode confirms that the transformations are somewhat sentient. Even in the 1st episode when Gwen asks how it felt to be an alien he said that it felt like it's was him, BUT at the same time it felt like he was SOMEBODY else.
I mean.... AF SPOILER ahead . . . . . . . . Azmuth explains to us that the Omnitrix can restore a whole species back to life, happened it to get extinct...

This episode is soo eerie and great!!! When I first watched this episode, Gwen being possessed by Ghostfreak kinda scared me a lot and no wonder why this is listed as one of the darkest moments. The next episode is kinda bizarre and I loved it!!!
Now THIS is the episode I was waiting for lol. The airing order and production order are different, as the production order places Ghostfreaked Out between the Galactic Enforcers and Ultimate Weapon. A great episode that introduces one of my favorite characters in the franchise Ghostfreak, AKA Zs'Skayr. (Note that Zs'Skayr is Ghostfreak's real name, and was mentioned after the OG series ended. He won't actually be called that until Omniverse though.)

This only applies to Ectonurites, (Ectonurites are a ghost/phantom based species from Anur Phaetos in the Anur System. Their Ecto-Lord is Zs'Skayr AKA Ghostfreak.) Because their consciousness is present in every strand of DNA, Hence when the DNA sample for the omnitrix was taken from a dead Ectonurite(Zs'Skayr), his consciousness also got transferred into the omnitrix.
Yeah Ben has absolutely no issue with using lethal force, which makes it even more baffling that a lot of the fandom have this strange misconception that he doesn’t kill despite all evidence to the contrary.

Get ready for nightmares! Ben doesn't intentionally screw up the tour. You see how he was uncharacteristically brutal? I think that happens with others to varying degrees, but this wasn't instinctual combat instinct, that was straight up sadism. So now you see a raw ectonurite. They have some nifty tricks. The new one we see here is that their identity lives on in their DNA, and the donor was particularly nasty one. Fortunately for Ben, without being a part of the Omnitrix, Z'Kayr (name not revealed for a while, but f it.) loses protective seal, rendering him vulnerable to sunlight. I honestly feel a little bad for the circus trio. They just got wrecked by ghostfreak, only for Z'Kayr to force them to work for him, then he uses them as meat puppets before getting taken down by Gwen and Max. I mean, they chose a life of crime without ever lamenting that, but they got dragged into some major drama in this episode and got walloped to boot. Repeatedly.

Actually, it was confirmed with one of the Pop Up trivia bits that Cannonbolt was actually traded for Diamondhead for a spot on the OG 10.

I mean jumping off of ledges is nothing new to technically somewhat serious cartoons considering Yu-Gi-Oh did it once when Kaiba wanted to win a duel and if he lost he would have jumped off a building mid duel killing himself

Ben doesn't intentionally screw up the tour.
You see how he was uncharacteristically brutal? I think that happens with others to varying degrees, but this wasn't instinctual combat instinct, that was straight up sadism.
So now you see a raw ectonurite. They have some nifty tricks. The new one we see here is that their identity lives on in their DNA, and the donor was particularly nasty one. Fortunately for Ben, without being a part of the Omnitrix, Z'Kayr (name not revealed for a while, but f it.) loses protective seal, rendering him vulnerable to sunlight.
I honestly feel a little bad for the circus trio. They just got wrecked by ghostfreak, only for Z'Kayr to force them to work for him, then he uses them as meat puppets before getting taken down by Gwen and Max. I mean, they chose a life of crime without ever lamenting that, but they got dragged into some major drama in this episode and got walloped to boot. Repeatedly.
I Know This Might Sound Kinda Odd & Crazy But Am I Only One Who Actually Thought Zombozo Was Ghostfreak Because Of The Circus Freaks Being In This Episode Back As A Kid?
