Hi Henry, Good to see you back.
Shame I'm way over the country is Sussex as I would have been delighted to give you a hand with the Stag, but that's a bit of trek!
I've just had a glance over the BL slant 4 engine manual and the torque wrench settings list: "Rear oil seal... 6-9 lbf.ft (0.8-1.2 kgfm)".
Looking forward to the MG tune up.
    Keep up the good work👍.

Yup, it would be a great pleasure to come and help with the Stag....unfortunately I am a little while away....Don't be scared of the repairs, what is the worst that can happen?....it won't work...that's where it is today. I have a plaque on my wall that my daughter gave me that says..."I have learned so much from my mistakes....I'm thinking of making some more"....it helps sometimes....

Love the plaque Lorne, but I can’t help worry I’ll do I’ll do some damage and make it worse. But I am bringing myself around to it

Good to be back Mark, although I'm still not sure how much I'm going to get to the garage. Such a pain when work gets in the way of hobbies!

Hi Henry, if the thread on the manifold bolts are the correct thread it is more likely that the threads in the head are stripped with that being the softer metal. If they are, get yourself a helicoil kit as they are really simple to use. Use a piece of aluminium to practice on but once you've done one you'll be good to go. Make a guide from a piece of steel about 25mm square by drilling two holes in it square to the face. One hole needs to be the size of the drill supplied with the helicoil and the other a slight clearances on the tap. Used this as a guide to drill and tap the holes square to the head. If the bolts are correct I suspect they have been previously over tightened so it may be worth while to do all of them.

Yeah Andy, I sort of know this is the issue but currently trying to fool myself into thinking I don't need to take the manifold off again. Self delusion to make it feel like I'm making progress
