    This was a good video but it made me sad because it made me remember about how not very long ago there used to be tons of flightless rail species all over Oceania and now all that’s left is the weka & the Guam rail, which doesn’t even live on mainland Guam anymore.

    Whenever there’s an isolated island, there’s bound to be a flightless rail species native to it
    New Zealand, Hawaii, Aldabra, you name it, it probably has a flightless rail species native to it

    Thanks for bringing to light another little talked about extinct species.
    I'm always amazed that rails had spread across so many islands across vast areas of ocean. It's such a waste that so many have become extinct due to human "interaction".

    Those land bridges are an interesting hypothesis from the past.

    You're less a paleoguy who occasionally talks about birds than a bird guy who occasionally talks about paleontology.

    Sad that humans had no idea they’d lose their food supply to extinction from over hunting.

      It seems ridiculous to us now, but until way into the 19th century, there was still a debate about whether or not a whole species could actually go extinct.

    The maori ate the moriori people. Plus the big birds were eaten too.

    Interesting that they were so easy to sneak up on when their heads were down for foraging. I guess if there have never been any land predators after you, why bother interrupting your foraging and expending the energy to be hyper alert... Still seems strange that the noise of a person approaching from the front wasn't enough to warn the bird, especially since an approach from behind _was_ enough warning. Odd. 🤷🏼‍♀️
    Yet another fascinating look at New Zealand's lost birds. Let's hope humans can protect what is left instead of being the final blow to the existence of any more species!

      Yeah, I was thinking much the same thing... and also thinking how much of a totally ass hole move that is... just walk right up to it, grab it by the neck and strangle it... ugh... I don't want to live on this planet anymore. =/

      @@ScumfuckMcDoucheface Yes, certainly not a hunting method to be proud of- no skill required. 😒🙄

      @@dorabrooks76 just like most other y'know? like... go fight a bear with your fists and a bowie knife, if you win and kill it? yeah, you're totally good to kill and eat that bear in my book haha clear conscious, clean karma... right?... OR, give the bear a long range scoped rifle and spend years and years teaching it how to make 1000 yard shots from up in a tree hide, covered in the stench of Marlboro and Budweiser =/ again, a far hunt.
      haha =)

      @@ScumfuckMcDoucheface lol Very valid point. 👌 Imo the only hunting that's ok is for consumption. Sport hunters can jump off a cliff.
