Thanks for your question. I studied harmony when I was younger and have a diploma from the Guildhall School of Music. I generally improvise to begin with, but my background generally informs me what melodic lines and rhythms sound good. In this video, harmonic rules and progressions come into play. There is nothing wrong with bing bang bonging around (one can usually come up with something interesting).
