Rather than to criticize either of these two amazing singers, I think one should appreciate the fact these two singers are alive in our lifetime and were able to perform together. Performances like this are very rare. And very amazing!
I don't even know what's there to criticize. The modulation and projection are great; plus the individual match between those two glorious voices is about as close to divine perfection as you can get.
Bocelli is not a performer who has an overpowering opera tenor but his tone is beautiful and his phrasing is excellent. Here he does a superb job with the great and powerful baritone, Terfel. Their voices match perfectly and the performance is incredible. Thanks for posting this so that others could see the beauty and genius of Bizet.
Amusiclover1954. Are you serious? Bocelli not having an overpowering tenor voice. I think you might be trying to be clever without much knowing much or perhaps a music critic who doesn't know much. 😊
Terfel often overpowers others with his powerful and effortless voice, this is an amazing duet. What bocelli lacks in power he makes up for in a smooth and pleasant voice. probably my favourite version of this piece
jamesgatward1985 Personal opinion. Boc lacks nothing in power. He's being kind and respectful listen to his version of this with the getting better with age Domingo. My god can he hold his own. I'm not even a Boc number one fan. But damn if he doesn't respect the music and the director first. Plus blind. He's holding back and one can hear it. It's an amazing bit of grace. But I appreciate your take.
This version is so magical. Both singers seem to bring their own unique talents to this: 1) Andrea: a beautiful lyric tenor 2) Terfel: a strong bass-baritone tenor. I love this!
And this is why they are both elite in the field. When Andrea reached over and grabbed Terfel's arm...that is called passion. That's what determines how far you are willing to take the dream. Magnificent.
The Blue Cup Nailed it. Just like when the 3 tenors playfully gave it to Domingo when Pavorotti would of sufficed. Damn. That's kindness and humble and being a human before the art which often requests we be competitive despite grace.
The grabbing of the arm is part of acting the words of the duet. The two singers in the opera both fall for the goddess, and at the last minute (the last few bars of this duet), come back from the brink and swear to be love each other as brothers, until death. It might of course contain passion, but the clasping of each others' arms is also part of the action needed for the duet.
A stunning duet. One of the very best. I have never been able to listen to this song without tears and this version brought brought a waterfall of them.
"A mismatch"? These are two very different characters in an opera, stunned and enthralled by beauty, almost drunk in their amazement that crowds of people worship this girl; They are having a conversation, sometimes separately, and interrupting each other, sometimes talking over one another, then resolving into a sublime duet. This is so masterfully done, by two brilliant artists, that it is moving and energetic. It is not bland, yet the tones are true in every sound.
Always thought Björling & Merrill set the benchmark for all time on this duet, but have to waver on the absolutely gorgeous blend of these two magical voices. It is especially pleasing to hear Bocelli open up the stronger, more spinto side of his voice, which still never strays from lush emotional beauty. Two of the greatest vocal sounds today, a match made in heaven!
Incredibly beautiful duet, sung by these two & very emotive. It is the pathos in Andrea Bocelli's voice that always catches at my heart strings. I always know it's Bocelli singing because he has such a distinctive tone and quality to his voice. Bryn Terfel is magnificent and has such power and command. Both are pure magic here. I'm no opera expert but I know what I like and wouldn't want to know and understand all the technicalities of opera singing as would spoil it for me. In this case, "If ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise"
Unbelievable - 2 extraordinary men with beautiful voices. Why are opera "experts" so critical of Andrea? He can hold his own with anyone including the powerful Bryn Terfel
I agree! There is so much snobbery in the opera community. People like Andrea has bought ordinary people opera which they may not bother to been exposed and let’s face it Bryn would not have sung with him if it made him look bad. Loved the performance
Actually I would consider him to be one of the most powerful voices at the MET. I go seven times each year. His placement is perfect and he is a rather large man as well. Among the men his considered among the most powerful. There are sopranos and a few tenors who can compete with him but not many. If you ever get the opportunity to hear Bryn Live I hope that you will take advantage of it. He is wonderful. You are quite correct. he is really holding back here. A true gentleman!
He is a true gentleman. My biggest complaint (other than the fact that Bocelli isn't an opera singer) is that Terfel's voice sounds distorted because of the microphones, which are necessary because Bocelli can't be heard without one. Yes, they're in an outdoor venue where mics are often necessary to make up for imperfect acoustics, but the amplification still distorts Terfel's voice.
@@adamknight7041 Jonathan Antoine still needs a lot of training, and I fear he won't get it because his handlers are more interested in making money off of him rather than seeing him trained to sing with proper technique.

I love that you are only 21 and are enjoying this music. Good for you! BRAVO! If you ever get the chance please go and see Bryn live. You will never forget it. He is just amazing. He is a fantastic actor and an incredible voice. The MET seats 3800 and he can blow out the back wall ! It is over 400 feet from the stage to the back row!! I try to get there at least 7 times a year. There is nothing like it.
Utterly beautiful, full of 'tugging on the heart strings' and without doubt in my mind the best ever rendition of this piece I have ever heard. I so wish that my father was alive today as he never knew of or heard either Bryn or Andrea singing one of his favourtie pieces.
I've listened to many versions of this duet as it was my late mothers favourite. We're welsh so I sort a version with Bryn in but I have to say that the duet is the most emotional and beautiful version I have heard yet. Bryn and andrea seem to find the confidence between them to reach perfection by the end of the performance. Cant thank them both enough for this. Wish I'd found it before mum went.
So beautiful, two incredible artists, tears brimming my eyes. Still alive in my 70+ years. I was brought up to appreciate the wonders of great artists. From my Grandmother to my Father also the greatest Bechstein grand piano. My nights in my box at Covent Garden Opera House and the greatest performances in my life. What a wonderful aria this is. He fills the MET like few singers can do. When he brings the volume up it pings all over the hall. Bryn is really a baritone who prefers to sing bass rolls. He is one of those singers who does not sound well when he sings past the passaggio. I totally agree with your remarks regarding Bocelli.
I keep reading comments saying Bocelli's voice 'lacks power'. What?! It rings out like a bell and has great projection. This is NOT a 'weak' voice. His tenor is beautifully lyrical. The quality of an operatic singer should not be assessed solely on his lung volume and how loud he can shout.
It isn't a weak voice, but it's a smaller voice than Terfel's. Most voices _are_ smaller than Terfel's. Bryn here is adapting his delivery to match Bocelli's, and the result is quite beautiful.
