I spent many an hour on a similar setup as a kid and the one thing a lot of your viewers are missing out on are the smells of making hay, From the smell of the diesel exhaust on a cool morning, the sweet smell of the fresh cut hay to the smell of the dust that collects on your arms as the day goes by. Love your video's and always look forward to the next one.
Pete, really enjoyed your mowing videos. My Dad was the son of a retired dry farmer and ihope this does not freak people out , but I thought it was very appropriate.o in my Dads coffin I put small baggy of freshly mown hay. So he could have some nice smells from the farm for his next chapter of life.

I cut my fields yesterday morning. Nothing better than watching those clean rows develop. It is also worth mentioning that process never gets old, and you get much better at it over time.
I got carried away mowing and cleaned up a bunch of my property. I only cut 4 acres of hay. A good start and test of my equipment. Being retired now it's tough to figure out how much or little time I have.

I would like to work on a farm. They tell me the average farner is 65 and needs help. I put up ads asking to work on farms but got no calls.
@@thewayidoit8895 if you mean time of life, some live much longer than others expect. My Grandpa was obese abd lived to 90. My other Grandpa was constantly dieting and concerned with health, and died of cancer at 83, I think. The one honored God, the other had turned on God because he _thought_ there were contradictions in the scriptures.

@@BaptistJoshua Farmers don't trust outsiders for the most part. Try joining a farm community church or shooting club. Once people know who you are and see what kind of person you are, they're much more likely to let you in. Be prepared to volunteer if necessary. Trade your help for farming knowledge.

Pete, that was a brilliant video - thank you. The drone shots - which are in danger of becoming too commonplace on some TH-cam channels, IMHO, - were excellent. Thank you, Pete! I can see how you enjoy the sound of the diesel and it's THRUM-THRUM-THRUM with the harmonics. Truly mesmerizing! All those dandelion fluffs started to clog up the radiator some 14:34 - I am sure you kept tabs on your gauges and there was no problems with excessive temperature. All your hard work has paid off and you had everything work together to give you a positive outcome, with just one rock guard to fix. Glad you found that bolt... we felt guilty we were the cause due to you filming! And a great bunch of angles - especially the one from the drone up above looking at your property from the triangle 13:32 field - it showed the pond in relation to your Dad's house and the layout of your farm so that all the pieces came together in that one view to know where things are. This was a wonderful way to help me start my Sunday and I wanted to be sure you knew it was appreciated. Thank you! 👍

Got started on hay last week. Got a bit of rain coming thru the area now so gonna resume Tuesday. Glad to see I'm not the only one who has dropped stuff I'm working on and have to hunt thru the grass to find it! It's a good feeling when you do find it!
Those old IH are great , 756 75 hp 6cyl. 1206 120hp. 6cyl. And so on .
Pete, your drone shots reveal a new angle to your process of creating this tremendous, my favorite, picture. By the way, this video, I’ve watched it at least twice, reminds me of my dad and mowing the lawn at the house I grew up in. Dad, mean as he was, taught me a great life lesson. After about age 14, he never had to ask me to mow. We had quite the process, again, another life lesson. Thanks for the memories, Pete!
I had an Uncle that bled green, but he somehow ended up with an IH 990 haybine. He bragged on that machine and had nothing but good things to say about it. Thanks for reminding me about him.
Cutting and baling hay was among my favorite jobs. Raising and lowering the cutting head at just the right time and turning just right to keep the edge nice and square always made the job fun.

Excellent video and great to see the barn extension almost complete. My tenant has just cut first cut silage here in the UK so the timings are similar to the US. Great see the old machinery working so well. The newer stuff is no doubt more efficient time wise but the old stuff just has that aura about it. Like the comments about hay making. Super channel Pete please keep it going.

Reminds me of my childhood. Our neighbour was a farmer too and when he cut his grass, we just watched him, because it was so calming. When we were older, he would allow us to help load up the finished hay bales and drive on the trailer back to his barn.
Watching you mowing hay is same as watching the flames of a fire place. Brings calm and reflection.

And as Pete says,you must pay constant attention to markets and pricing.
As well as the cycle of the seasons.
Pete, you’ve just shown this old high school principal that the best training to be a hayfield mower is to first become a great architect! You’ve got such a good run of videos. Yours and Lumnah’s channel can’t be beat. I’m now disabled, in body, not mind! You two guys entertain me often throughout each week. I can understand how you feel when you're out in the field working. Nothing can match the soothing sound of nature, or the sound of the diesel engine just humming along

I'm so glad your fields aren't dried out like last year at this time. I was worried about all of you farmers all over the country and prayed for rain. So relieved that the Lord provided an abundance to make up for the hard times.
Baby calves jumping around the field is my favorite. Hay that has been out in the barn is my second. Every step of the process is rewarding. A full barn is a great accomplishment.
Pete, I love your videos! I’m a first time farmer at age 79 and farming 50 50 with a family my wife and I have know for 55 years. I did the fall plowing and helped pick rocks from the field this spring. Our corn is just up after planting 8 days ago. I’m worried about weather and prices and regulations like all the other farmers out there. But I envy the kind of farming that you, Hillary and the kids do. Thank you for being an inspiration to all of us newbies. God bless.

I remember when my dad let me for the first time cut the grass for hay on our farm, at twelve years old it was such a great feeling and I still remember the first time smell. These moments on the farm you never forget even when you've been on the tractor for a couple of days.
I keep a magnet with each of my tractors for finding nuts and bolts that fall.

I used to cut hay with my dad and the thing I remember most is the sweet smell of fresh cut hay. Now everytime I go past a freshly cut field and smell that smell, I return to my younger years and I can almost feel the tractor fender under me and hear the JD rumble.
Using older equipment is such a rewarding way to farm!!

Making hay was one of my most favorite jobs on the farm. We cut the hay with a 1469 New Holland self-propelled Haybine (three wheeled with twin sticks to steer with skid steer style), raked with a White/Oliver 44 diesel tractor with a 5-speed synchro-mesh transmission and baled with a New Holland small square bailer that we ran with an IH 656 Farmall with a hydrostatic transmission and a trike front axel. The 656 was my hands down favorite tractor that we had - so versatile and maneuverable. We also had a 956 Farmall with a hydrostatic transmission, but I much preferred the 656 for most applications - especially backing loaded hay wagons into the barn!
As a small farmer, it is refreshing to see older equipment getting the job done. Its amazing to watch new bigger machinery but theres a more personal touch to the old stuff. I run a 1969 David Brown 990 that my father bought new. Nothing like it. My equipment is all antique. I can work on everything. I may not run with the "big boys" but its all payed for. Mowing hay is a lot better and cheaper therapy than any shrink

Favorite time of year on the farm
Thanks so much, Pete, for the drone shots. Haying is very beautiful and it's wonderful to hear your love for the "sound" of haying, too :-)). It's a great example of your farm's late Spring "environmental sound-scape!" This term was coined by Canadian composer, educator and environmentalist R. Murray Schafer. He'd have loved your mentioning how one's senses open up when you're out in the field or forest for long period of time. Murray wrote huge theatre pieces which were meant to be performed outdoors. As I sang the 7 minute aria of Princess of the Stars, it changed as the echoes changed theoughout the day. At 5 am, in late Summer, the air felt like velvet - up at Haliburton Forest & Wildlife Reserve. Truly amazing! And your smile at the end of your video would have brought a smile to Murray's face too. The Princess' aria has no words, just vowel sounds mimicing loon calls. And he also wrote an Aubade for Two Voices which was based on the call of nuthatches. So, when you cheerfully point out bird calls in your beautiful woods, I'm reminded of spending 2 weeks in the forest of the HF&WR each August. I now live on the West coast of Canada, so these memories are precious. Thank you for all you do. Yours in Gratitude

You're correct on the sounds Pete, my first car was a 1939 ford with no radio. I knew every sound it made white driving.

Great video ( as always) . Noticed you went the "wrong" way when opening up the hay field. I don't think I have seen it done that way ( or at least I was taught to go the wrong way first! ha).
Nothing like fresh mowed hay. Brings back a lot of memories of putting up hay when I was a kid.

Next Pete may "tet" the hay, wait a day or two then he makes the round bales and picks them up to store them... so let's together figure out it takes about 5 days(?) from cutting to store the hay away as round bales... then the grass has to grow up enough for there to be enough forage for the cows to eat - another week or so? So maybe 3 weeks to a month, I'd guess, before he can graze after cutting hay? But I am just guessing based on watching his wonderful videos. Pardon me for trying to answer for Pete - only he has the true answers for his farm. 😉

Is the wide front end tractor used so you don't run over the cut rows?
Tractor running sweetly and making hay whilst the sun shines; what could be better? Always puts me in mind of being shown and mastering a scythe as a lad. We had several small fields cut that way in the fifties. Take your hat off to the entire village then when they all turned out to cut then later harvest. Thank you Pete for posting superb videos which bring back memories of things we are losing back here in the the UK.
Pete - it is so encouraging to see how you are maintaining and using old equipment. The value you are creating by using these great old machines and financial savings by investing in old equipment is a model that other farmers like yourself can replicate to be succesful!! I love watching your videos, Pete. Reminds me of when I was a kid in the 70s and 80s helping the old gentleman who lived up the hill put up his winters hay. He didn't have the "fancy gear" like you have; we cut with an old sickle bar, baled small square bales with a massey ferguson baler all towed behind some ford N series tractors...simpler times and I miss them.

I helped my uncle move some square bales into his barn yesterday. I love that smell. There's nothing like it. That said, his baler broke and now we're racking our brains to get it working again. Always got something to repair, but it keeps things interesting.

I think people like watching you on tractor cutting the hay because it's relaxing. World is stressful enough, so this is calming. You really don't need to talk. LOL
I loved your comment about listening to the equipment, and getting in tune with the way it was supposed to sound. Not all people have that ability. On our farm we quickly learned that we couldn’t let my younger brother run the equipment. He didn’t tune in to changes in the sound of equipment and stop when it didn’t sound right. He would go until there was a catastrophic failure that would do more damage and cost more to repair.
NOTHING like the sound of that 756 working! We also had a "sister" tractor, the 706 and we always called it the "Seven Ott Six". Sounded the same. I used to ride shotgun with my husband (oops I guess that is illegal). You bring joy to my heart!
