The thing with boxes, and I'm sure Sam knows this, is that they are not to draw anatomy, they are to draw the structure. When you add the anatomy on top, it dosn't needs to match the box, the box is there because it is much easier and more precise to understand the planes of a box than of a circle and that makes it easier to find the perspective. But boxes are used to draw people all the time. The mistake is to think that the shape of the box corresponds to the anatomy. It's like a low poly skeleton.
Agreed, sometimes if I’m having trouble visualizing how a face will look in a certain perspective then I draw a box to understand where the planes are and the base the sketch of the head off of that
Thanks for the clarification! As a beginner, I got confused about why Sam explained that using a box is bad, when it helped me a lot to know where the face/body is facing, especially at head angles. I'm still a little confused, but I guess I need to figure it out on my own.😅
Help, I actually had this phase before. I was able to draw boxes accurately, but the problem was that I tended to try to match the anatomy above the structure (which turned out not okay). I had been wondering if drawing boxes didn't work for me, but turned out I was using the structures incorrectly the whole time. I'm really thankful for Sam and this comment. It really helps improve my drawing:D

I don't even think those people are making tutorials to teach, they're making them to get views. Noobs won't make the difference between a bad and good tutorial.
I'm a visual learner. Boxes really mess me up because they never make sense beyond angular shapes, so I've been trying to merge and test out a bunch of different methods to see what works for me. The boxes are super helpful for perspective settings but otherwise they make me feel like a fish flopping in the sand. 1 flop forward 3 flops back. xD
You should try read some anatomy for artist by tomfoxdraws, he explain it well how to use box to draw anatomy I used to hate box, mainly because i don't understand perspective well enough until recently someone enlightened me about it and holy crap, box does fix a lot of my problem and help me improve tremendously and the best thing was it help me draw head more accurately than before I don't care Whatever sam say about boxes, but i fucking love boxes now
I specifically saw a youtube tutorial of "use box for head not ball" The point of that tutorial was simply talking about how it's hard to get things on the side of your head (mostly ears) in the right place when you use other constructions (like a ball). When the head is looking up or down, the height on the canvas of the ear compared to the eye line changes, and drawing a mid-line around a box can help you realize where it should be. When you draw your line around a ball, it's kind of difficult to angle that line correctly for perspective. I played around with it for a while, and it did help me a bit when drawing heads at odd angles, but I don't use it most of the time.
About the Loomis method: something that I always noticed is that people seem to not read what Loomis wrote in his books and only copied the head examples and though that is how you are supposed to do every head ever. In his book "Fun With a Pencil" you can see how it can be used for caricature.
I genuinely have never used boxes for anatomy, especially for the head. It always feels like just a crutch to make the page less blank. And in my case makes it more cluttered and confusing.
Sam!! Don't be scared, it's just me! You know, the guy who breaks into your house at night, steals your food, punches your dog, and, at dawn, appears out of nowhere to almost kill you from the heart and, on top of that, get art advices and leave! :D
The boxes beef is so funny lmaoooo, true for beginners though! I think they're useful for informing perspective, lighting and volume so long as you keep in mind they're not organic shapes! And if you modify the box (i.e. make some of the faces trapezoid, use cylinders in places) then they can be really good for constructing poses etc, but to be able to draw well with them, you already need decent anatomy knowledge because they're not a good guideline for anatomy, which is where a lot of these tutorials incorporating them go wrong
I do not think I have ever laughed so hard from any of the artists I follow, Sam this one was a gooder. "Just remove the od from method and that is what you found" haha good one. Thanks for all the videos man, keep up the good work!
Sam not getting the idea of using boxes for heads in perspective could be summed up as this: tell me you've never studied Bridgman without telling you've never studied Bridgman. Also rip to jakedontdraw getting bodied by Sam like that, ouch
To be honest, there is no problem with the boxes. Renaissance masters were using boxes, but the thing is that, for a beginner who doesn’t know anatomy, they shouldn’t use boxes. But for a more advanced artist, if you know how to use them, boxes can be very useful.
I disagree. Everyone can use boxes, regardless of their level. They just have to know what to use them for. Boxes are for everything perspective related. When it comes to the face it's about placement of the symmetric features in perspective, in 3/4 view for instance. Or spacing the thirds correctly when the face is seen from above or below. That's what you use the box for: only perspective, nothing anatomy related.
@@lonestarr1490yep. I’ve never gotten sams dislike for them. I used to be against boxes too, but I've found they can be useful - when used correctly. I picked up George Bridgeman's Constructive Anatomy book as it was recommended by many other artists. In the section on The Head, he says: "For so long a time has the oval been used as the basis for the construction of the human head and face that the use of the block or cube seems quite evolutionary. Yet for many reasons the cube seems preferable. The oval is too indefinite, and offers no points for comparison, no basis for measurement. The eye does not fix on any point in a curved line. On the ground plane of a square, however, any form may be built. The block moreover carries with it from any angle its perspective and its foreshortening, and it carries with itself the sense of mass." That being said, the other points brought up here are also valid. Learn the rules before you break them. Fully understand the techniques before employing them. Then you can start exploring the space to understand and stretch the limits of your style and preferences.
