    Hey thanks for sharing this book! We want to move from Kansas to Oregon within the next 10 to 15 months. I had no idea you were located there. From what we are finding most of the affordable land seems to be South Central which is not really where we had been wanting. The South Central area looks like its been over forested or maybe miss managed or maybe even just experiencing more drought. After seeing what you shared (and we will buy this book) it looks like it might be worth a harder look. We wish we could come for a visit before moving but due to money we will have to figure that out are after we get there. All we know is we want out of Kansas. It is just a matter of time when we will see another dust bowl here. Too many people have forgotten lessons learned from that man made disaster and once Kansas found the aquifer they went right back to bad practices. We don't want to wait for such a disaster again before relocating. Hubby and I just want a small homestead 10 - 20 acres with some kind of water source and fuel source. Although we don't know much at all as far as homesteading we do want to have more control of our lives, have the ability to raise our own food and to be more self sustaining. Of course we hope our children decide to follow and join us on the farm but if not at the least we want to enjoy the beauty of Oregon before life is over. Just talking to others that have done left the city for homesteading we always wind up with the same advice..."You won't know if its a life for you until you just do it." I am sure this is so true.

    Good subject! My fiance' and I are about to relocate back to my homestate of WA. One thing I have been giving a lot of consideration not mentioned about this book is climate change. As a field biologist and permaculture designer I've been documenting many of the changes this is having. Reliable water and resilient ecology are getting to be more important. 5 factors have lead me to believe the west coast from, Northern CA to Southern Alaska, will ride out intensifying climate swings better than the rest of the continent. First, mediterainean climate. This means reliably wet winter and dry summers. Most continents have one coastline like this. The ecology is already used to wide annual swings in climate and is more resilient as a rule. Places like the mid-west or back-east that are used to rain every few weeks are going to fail when it doesn't rain for 3 months, which is normal here. Second, trees, all of the worlds largest and oldest trees live in the mediterainean climates. Thousands years old beings living in your area infers some degree of stability. Third, between the ocean and a mountain range. This should guarantee winter moisture as clouds from the ocean must drop some precip. as they are forced over a range. Fourth, all the worlds successful settlements have settled somewhere where they have had multiple ecology's to draw on. In this case, the Pacific Ocean and many rivers (fishing, salt, temp. stability, etc.), numerous mountain ranges (hunting, water, forest, etc.), and the bottom land in between (farming, pasture, etc.). Park yourself above Tsunami line, build a quake resistant home, and learn methods for storing water on your landscape through the dry summers and you should do pretty well for yourself. Fifth, anywhere along this zone will still be quit habitable if it swings colder or hotter. If you're in the tropics and it gets hotter, or the cold regions and it gets colder, then you are SOL. If WA get to be more like northern CA or Northern BC, I'm still going to be doing pretty well.

    I've read the book and I have a lot of issues with the book. I certainly don't have the "expertise" the author does, but I've lived in some of these good states and some of these bad states.
    For starters, Utah should really only have 2 stars. Sure it's surrounded by wastelands, but that can be easily traversed, especially with today's technology. We did it in Africa in the 1940s. Also have you ever tried to grow crops in Utah? Sure it can be done, but you would need almost all your time invested in it or a lot of store bought items to augment your time with crops. Not to mention Utahs water shortage. Sure during spring there's plentiful water, but the humidity lacking the rest of the year kills off plant life. And let's not forget the freezing winters. Winters in Utah reach temperature below 0 degrees F. Being that I've done a lot of traffic control to Utah highest employer for roughly 4-5 years I've dealt with around 3,600,000 interactions with Utahans, and they're,mostly, pampered

    • @jonlapang3196
      @jonlapang3196 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The book has many factual inaccuracies or important information omitted. Trying to assess the strategic implications of each state is a tall order. I think the book needs a revision if it has not already. Overall, it was a good attempt but you must double check the information and come to your own conclusions.

    • @user-nh3gu1ge3d
      @user-nh3gu1ge3d 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You think most people, who as you say are pampered, are going to drive through a wasteland, off road, etc? I don't. I also assume that if you are relocating to a "prepper friendly" home, it would have a water source, like a well. Otherwise, yes I agree that would be dumb. So just make sure you've got a water source and you're good on that one. I can't speak to growing things in Utah but as for the temperature, 0 degree winters are not very bad. It's all relative I guess. It sounds way better to me than anywhere in California with 40 million people, traffic, congestion, etc. And up north where it's -50 as James mentioned. I suppose the "perfect" spot would be an island with a small group of capable people and tons of extra food and water with terrain that is impervious to weather (like mountains).

    It is interesting that he gives more stars for arid areas which are annually afflicted with forest fires and drought. If your rural and have water seem to me to be the most important features of any strategic relocation plan. In the rural areas of New England we rarely (if ever) worry about water, we have virtually no need for irrigation and don't worry about crop failings.

    Idaho is always on fire. Our drouths are legendary, there are no jobs and those that exists are minimum wage jobs. Housing is sky high and building off grid is next to impossible. Also, mining claims going back to the gold rush times prohibit just throwing up a shelter. Add to that Idaho gives grazing rights on public land to ranchers who guard them with guns. (Recent stories abound of suspected trespassing dead people found on open range thought to have been done in by angry cattlemen and sheepherders. ) It is safer to stay in California where you have nice safe government to take care of you or go to Alaska or Mexico. Honest. And Idahoans have more guns per capita than just about any other state and we teach our women to shoot. They aim for the crotch.

And what better deterrent than Gators, Cottonmouths, and Mosquitoes. I can understand that Fl gets a low rating for evacuation reasons and high population. Most of us can't afford, have the health or strength especially if you're older, to pack off and move to the wilderness to live off the land using only minimal levels of technology. Feel even better about my move to a suburb of Toronto 30 years ago. You can't just be worried about a strategic SHTF location, you have to find a location that strikes a balance during good times and SHTF. While Toronto is getting really expensive now, thankfully I moved here when it was cheaper and bought a house 20 years ago. Job opportunities here were great years ago, still ok, getting worse, but I am fine I am quite secure. Toronto does not get earth quakes, hurricanes, tornadoes are usually well north of where I live and are rare. Living close to the bluffs, I am over 100 meters above sea level, so no major flood issues, but close enough to the lake if water was necessary. Drought that is plaguing the West coast of North America, is nowhere near Toronto, at 52 years old, by the time it makes it's way here, I'll be dead. Based on this video, Toronto is nowhere near a red zone. Oh yea, and I am a prepper, so even better.

      +Wranglerstar I am not convinced that it's a good read. It paints a bleak picture of a post apocalyptic world where cannibalism and lack of resources are the order of the day. It follows the story of a dying man and his young (tweener) son who have to leave their "bug - in" location in order to find a safer and more abundant place before the disease takes the father. They father tries to pass as much knowledge to his son along the way. It's an allegorical tale by Cormac McCarthy who was in advanced age at the time of writing the book and had a young son. He was anxious about dying before he had a chance to see his son grow up (with all the lessons and life wisdom lost). So this book (and later, movie) was speaking to that time in his life and of course, being McCarthy (No country for old men, All the pretty Horses) it does not have a particularly hopeful ending. I prefer to live in hope and joy as a child of God (but keep my eyes and ears open of course).

And would you mind sharing what region you are in? I don't mean to pry but the fact that your library has this book makes it an awesome location. I wouldn't worry about nuclear war or invasion. I'd be more worried about resource limitation - the price of oil/gas going through the roof once the Saudi $10/barrel oil is gone and the Chinese and Indian middle class come online in large numbers. Or the price of electricity going up to pay for enough battery storage to run the grid on wind and solar. LADWP's electricity rates have gone from 9cents per kwh to 15cents in 5 years in order to make investments in clean energy in CA. The big thing now is living near an aquifer that is not depleting on the decadal scale and is not contaminated with fracking waste or heavy metal/radionucleotide migration from fracking. You need water to grow your own food: OXFAM says the real price of food will double by 2030 secondary to overpopulation, climate change, corn ethanol fuel, &c. It'll hit third worlds harder than the US. But still it's good to have a back up in place.

    Have you considered rigging the bridges east of Portland with explosives? That way if the price of gas rises above four dollars a gallon you can swiftly trap the masses of northern California along its west coast. I'm not particularly sure what that would accomplish, but it would certainly help one sleep better at night. Also, land mines....purchasing several hectares in each direction of your bunker and turning them into strategic mine fields would go a long way in protecting your family. Granted, you would have to invest the majority of your childrens home school time in memorizing mine locations, but that's a small price to pay for complete home security.

      u are on to something. mine fields are overlooked

    • @eiseklompstra
      @eiseklompstra 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely, there has to be a reason the USA has refused to sign the Ottawa treaty - and that reason is clearly personal defense. I mean, say you have an orchard of apple trees, sitting outside 24 - 7, how can one be expected to keep an armed guard going around the clock? If civilization collapsed tomorrow, you might not have one apple to spare. You can rest easy knowing your family will be gingerly zigzagging their way to some fresh produce.

      that is where the term zig zag came from. kids going to school through german mine fields. "zig zag all the way home. no one can stop me!"

      Kale Klompstra I always thought the reason Americans didn't ratify any common sense or humanitarian treaties that almost the entire world ratifies is because you are unrepentant dickbags who just enjoy pain and misery, not because of any reason per se.

      That post was simply a joke poking around at his paranoia.
      Of course I don't agree with all of Americas global stances, but as I am not an American myself there is very little I can do.
      Let's keep hoping the world is a better place tomorrow.

    LOL California has a 1 star, but he should break it up into at least 3 sections, the 1 star rating is based on Southern California, but Northern Cali is COMPLETELY different than Southern.

      SUPERNOVA we just left So Cal!!! I'm sure the 1 star is an average of north and south. So Cal is now negative 85!!! Horrible place. Strategic relocation is awesome. Great book! We moved based on the recommendations. Info is accurate.

Get the book and study it, he's done all the work for you with research. You may not agree with everything he says or all his ratings but its loaded with good sound advice.

    Sounds like good book whether re-locating or staying put. Age caught up with us. Too many health related issues to start another homestead.
    Appears it will give folks, like us, a good look at threat potential around us. Better aid in deciding what/how resources can be best allocated to hunker down, when/if need arises. For ex: immediate effects from super volcano not an issue here. However, may take much higher priority if due east of Yellowstone. Those same folks not impacted by hurricanes.

    I took a domestic terrorism class recently and they mentioned that some white supreme st groups have been pushing hard for what they call the "migration". they want to occupy Oregon, Washington and Idaho because it's strategically advantageous to survive and economic collapse and race wars etc etc.

      Not nessecarily white supremacist but rather white nationalists. They just want to live around their own kind and there is NOTHING wrong with that. They're not hurting anyone by moving there.

    I have this book in my home library. I would recommend double checking the information in the book for the states of interest. There a few inaccuracies and some important information left out. Not due to the authors incompetence but more probably because of the volume of information he attempted to compile.

    • @jonlapang3196
      @jonlapang3196 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@maurosgarage for example, I lived in Illinois for a few years. In his Military section he missed Rock Island Arsenal. Also in his strategies for populated living areas, he says the Byron Power plant is SW of Rockville, when in fact it is SW of Rockford. Small details like these will have great impacts strategically. I have noted many inconsistencies like this. I am not saying they are blatant, it is a good book overall but I would take his conclusions with a grain of salt.
