The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I am close to 70 now. I was lucky enough to be in the studio audience for this show. No ticket either. I just snuck in. I was almost twelve, and Dusty was amazing.

Yeah. But the house band had no idea how to accompany her style correctly and Dusty didn't have time to teach them like she did when she recorded.

The perfection of the studio recording is what I enjoy. Dusty sounds phenomenal but the band lets her down because it isn't 'swinging' as on the record.
@@ytskeptic6834 Sounds more like the band was playing pretty much to the tempo of the recording, as Dusty was also, but Dusty could hang behind the beat a little at times. Dusty had that ability and she does it here. Top performers often took such liberties in a live show.
Oh Dusty, no other female singer comes close to your brilliance. I've loved Dusty since I was a girl in the 60s and today she remains my favorite female singer

Dusty was a special unique talent that she only possessed. What a joy to watch her perform. She is the best female singer of all time for sure.
Her voice doesn't stop... it soars through the walls of sound. Dusty has been my favorite singer since I was 12.

@@jonathanlane4496 that is interesting considering the quality , I wonder why they didn't use the boom mics more often (especially in those days when there wasn't the wireless ones) - seems better than having to use a cabled mic that is restrictive, I wonder why that didn't become standard practice.
In some contemporary photos from the show the mic can also be seen being held by a stagehand low down in front of the singer/band, again out of camera shot...
@@jeframp3805 There certainly were wireless mikes, they had been in use since before WWII by the BBC, and in theatres, problem was they were very bulky and heavy.
She was just as good in a live performance as she was in the studio.not a lot of artists are that talented.

For those of you who doubt this performance because you can't see a mic, well, it's right above her head. It's called a boom mic, and she had the lungs to reach it over the band. (Ed uses it too when he introduces guests.)

Voice like a cannon. Even with a whole band and orchestra backing her, her voice has more power than the band. And there was just something about her that was always original, even when she's singing a pop song.

Well, to me, this was a "live" performance. I've listened to the originals enough times to know she is adding her own "special touches" here. Best female singer ever! imho

@@danb4900 Yes cant be anything but live vocal. The camera is always tight on Dusty. Never shows what's above her which is the mic, just out of shot. And yes it has to be live because she sings it differently from the recording and occasionally claps, and Ed Sullivan liked live performances.

Wow! One of a kind! Full of class, so ladylike, and she could really belt out the tunes. So rare nowadays, where the singers need to have background dancers to accompany the lousy music. Dusty, what a breath of fresh air. So vibrant and entertaining in her own way! Unforgettable!
Excellent LIVE performance on two songs that needed to be belted out as only Dusty could do. She had a marvelous stage presence, very ingratiating and ladylike.

Dusty is oneof the greatest singers of all time. I's always loved her voice and energy. I was 13 when this was recorded.
The live segments from the NME poll winners gig in 65 and 66 are worth watching, Dusty aces it.

Talk about being a bad ass with integrity when Dusty found out that people of color weren't allowed to buy tickets to her concert in S. Africa in the 60's she cancelled the concert and told the promoters to shove it!!!

@Bruce Simian Yet in the UK, it was still legal for landlords not to rent to blacks and blacks and Asians faced a lot of racism there. The British act like racism never happened on their shores when it did.

Fantastic songs and performer and at least the audio is good, but even that should have been equalized to increase the highs. What happened to the video? There are 4th generation uploads that look better than this. This can't be the best quality they have in their vaults! It makes me think they had to get this from collectors.

During the Fame era, Lady Gaga wore a lot of blonde wigs very reminiscent of early Dusty Springfield. Reminds me of her. They have some similarities too, both grew up Catholic and attended Catholic school.
