A reminder, Turkey wanted to buy and negotiated for years as the country has fully integrated NATO defense network system. At that time they also invested heavily to F-35 and shaped their industry to produce the parts they're assigned to. USA however, with all lobbying in its own delayed the purchase and did everything possible to not sign it, "concerns" like Patriot's spec might be leaked to Russia was one of them. Europe also did not wanted to sell/partner with Turkey and NATO itself also blocked the Chinese deal. So as a country bordering several conflict zones, Turkey bought S-400, and USA not only kicked the Turkey without refunding any spending on F-35, they also officially requested that Turkey needs to give them several S-400 they bought in order to study Russian system. It feels satire, but western countries became quite circus themselves in this past decade. In response, Turkey decided to heavily invest its defense industry both Naval, Air and Land, as result they got pretty darn impressive products and got a good chunk of income as exporter. All thanks to NATO "allies" I guess.

Thank you. This is truly an objective assessment of the strive for Turkey to enter the 5th gen club. Turkey has made serious strides towards achieving self sufficiency in its defence sector which has been expedited by its allies. The KAAN will be a true 5th generation multi role fighter allowing Turkey to project power as it sees, which should not be seen as a threat to anyone.
As far as we know, Türkiye wanted to buy the Patriot system from America 12 times, but refused to sell in America. The process with the S400 is America's fault. Additionally, there are Russian S400s in Syria right next to Israeli F35 planes. Therefore, the S400s are already watching the F 35s. The excuse given to Turkey was a bit funny. Türkiye has already produced its own long-range advanced air defense system called SIPER. It doesn't need S400 either.

The issue here is that a country other than China, Russia and the United States produces such an aircraft and considering that Turkey does not impose restrictions on arms sales like Germany, this product will have a good sales potential when it is fully ready, after all, not every country can buy f-35 or su-57. That's why Türkiye is working to produce the critical systems of the aircraft (such as the engine) with its own resources. The fact that Türkiye is currently in the same category with the superpowers in terms of UAV is actually due to the embargoes it has faced for a long time. The sector has overcome many difficulties and thanks to the systems it has made local and national as a result of long efforts and R&D, today they have the right to sell to any country they want, anywhere in the world, without anyone's permission.

It is about reflection of electromagnetic waves. Low radar cross section needs special geometry. Smallest radar cross section is the lambda design known as flying wing geometry without vertical stabilizers. But lambda design is has very low maneuverability. So for stealth fighter jets second most efficient geometry is used called cropped diamond geometry. f-35, f-22, su-57, j-20 and Kaan they all have cropped diamond design. With bended vertival slabilizers. So they are looking alike...

It's an ambitious project which I've been following for some years, during which I've learnt about the capabilities of Turkish defense industry firms (5 of which are in the top 100), which is on par with the best of them on most fronts; I approached it on defense forums with much skepticism at first as I didn't know about Turkey's capabilities but I soon learnt that this is a serious project. We'll wait and see what comes of it but so far it's been promising. Even as a 4.5 fighter it'd be a great achievement as this is their first attempt.
Even though this was our first attempt to build a modern fighter jet, it wasn't our first attempt to build our aviation industry. What we had after first world war was destroyed under the guise of Marshall plans and Truman doctrines. Turkish aviation industry did build several planes and even exported some trainers back then. But the US decided our role in the middle east was a farming country and actually pressured government to shut down its airplane industry and even gifted us some airplanes they were decommissioning. Only after Lyndon B. Johnsons infamous letter (in 1964) to prime minister İsmet İnönü Türkiye realized that nothing is free and start rebuilding a defence industry after the US embargos in 1974.

Turkey produce and assemble and do maintaince of the F16 and black hawk, and they were a partner in producing parts for the F35 sleath fighter program. TAI is Lockheed Martin strategic partner while TEI the engine manufacturer procudes engines for General Electric they also collaborated on the European A400 atlas strategic airlifter thus the nation have the infrastructure and knowhow of producing aircrafts or Nato-standard equipments related to aviation in general not only that they are on par with China and The US in terms of highly sophisticated UAV and UCAV in both public and private sector like the TB2, TB3, Akinci, Kizilelma jet powered, the Anka S, the Aksungur and Anka 3 not even the whole European union comes close in terms of drones manufacturing. The kaan is going to be reality but producing it will require huge efforts, financial support and commitment, more expertise especially in the engine sector which is still the weak link and more important the time that such projects take a decade from the prototype to full manufacturing capabilities and that's not a handicap but a process that all nations who seeks or already have those 5th Gen platforms went through at the end it's a feat because a nation outside of the superpowers did it
why not just buy f35 from america? is it pressures of nationalism or turkey fears some hidden dead switch that america can turn off? the production and research and development has a crippling cost even for the largest economy on earth. f22 is 90's tech and f35 is early 2001's-2006 tech. america has had 25 years to pull ahead and fine tune the production and digital tech. the logistics of 25 years of production is probably insurmountable, from 350m per aircraft to the price of an f16 at 100m give or take 40m for capability (vertical, or carrier, or short take off).

There is an idiom in Turkish "A Bad neighbor make you a house owner". Turkey just wanted to buy patriot because of the conflict in Syria. But the US administration strongly refused it. So they bought S400 because they have no choice to protect themself after "Italians took back their missile system from a NATO base in Turkey". Turkey is making their own shield system btw. @@skp8748The fact they are NATO members and part of the F-35 program but then decide to source air defence from Russia which is clearly a conflict of interest. Opposing new NATO members for political reasons whilst there are clearly more important treaty issues, selling drone parts to Iran whilst also trying to build a drone factory in Ukraine. "Allegedly" supporting and funding some Hamas operations. It's not even a criticism really Turkey is doing what's right for Turkey it just makes them the odd one out in the organisation.
I don't think anybody commented their drone program. They can build it but they can't make indigenous components like chips and engine. Same for Bayraktar.

Turkey's self reliance approach is a wise long term decision. The information and experience they will gain will maintain their political independence and a new export industry.
Its no good if you can't launch enough satelites to utilise the planes systems fully. Only the big three can project that type of domination. I had to laugh at India purchasing American global hawks recently knowing that the US only has to turn of their GPS to disable them in an emergency.
Turkey has not demonstrated the kind of high tech industry needed to make this work and we've seen other countries with more resources fail spectacularly already. Then again if their clients are facing Russian/Chinese or worse weapon systems. Barely functional stealth might still help

They are trying to achieve something with the power they get from the national identity. It's admirable. Also, don't forget that the Turks are building a space launch base in Somalia by spending 6 billion dollars. Taking a step is better than lying down. This success has turned them into a 1.345 trillion dollar economy (IMF). If they continue at this pace, they will be the world's 12th economy and 6th largest army in 2030. 70 million tourists go to Turkey every year and we all see their national passion.

At this point, even if today US decides to give turkey the f35, Kaan will still be the primary aircraft for TAF. US lost a very important leverage point against Turkey because of armenian and greek lobbies that work to prevent every single weapon sale to Turkey.

Turkey has been pushing the envelope in last 10 years especially in aviation. Largest exporter of uav Technology. Amazing developments in electro optics, avionics and radar tech. Do not forget it is all about ecosystem under the umbrella of big contractors like TAI, Baykar, Asfat and So on. Recently, TB3 drone became a first drone to achieve take of and landing from an amphibious assault sahip without any launching or arresting system support. Kudos to all human resource sacrifice their effort in Turkish defence industry.

As an atheist, I can say this: Since more than half of our population is Muslim, Europe and America have always seen us as stepchildren and did not want our development, but everything is turning upside down. While our environment was full of internal and external wars and crises, we celebrated the 100th anniversary of our Republic last year. After 24 years, we will celebrate the 1000th anniversary of our official presence in Anatolia. We are proud of this.

Türkiye was producing airplanes 100 years ago. It was also producing submarines! At one point in history, we made the mistake of buying an F16, and now we are correcting it!

We were one of the partners of the F35 program, that is, some parts were manufactured in Turkiye until USA kicked us out of the program. Even the stealth technology belongs to one of the Turkish own companies which is only approved suppliers for the F35 and B2 Spirt. @@simsekoglu Paint alone does not make a plane stealth. It's just one factor in a large number of them. The single most important being the shape of the airframe and the tolerances it is manufactured to. It does no good to put up a thin absorbing layer on a panel that is going to flatly reflect a radio signal back to its antenna. The paint just can't deter the whole signal. It's just as important that the seams between panels are as tight as possible. A 3/8" seam is enough to provide a return.
You should take a closer look at the S-400 angle. It was more of a failure of NATO than Turkey itself. Turkey always wanted to get the Patriot systems from USA but the price asked for those systems were very steep, perhaps deliberately to keep Turkey vulnerable. So Turkey went ahead with a Chinese system. That deal was cancelled. Various reasons are being given for that; that the company producing the missiles was blacklisted by US Congress or that Chinese chose not to transfer technology. Only three options remained; Patriots, S-400s or the Eurosam. Euroepeans didn't want to partner with Turkey. USA continued to ask an unacceptable price for the Patriots. Only Russia remained and Turkey was forced to buy S-400 as a form of blood money for downing the Russian jet near the Syrian border.
what you have written about the patriots missiles is inaccurate my friend it was not about the money it was the U.S government it self didn't want to give the patriots missiles to Turkiye and Turkiye had no choice that time and decided to buy the s400, till that buying process Spain government has given their own patriots and setteled the bataries into the east side of Turkiye but anyway nowadays Turkiye has producing their own missiles which is more advanced and has more long range than s400 so s400 is no more needed.
I've heard something a bit different on this as well. With the USA not wanting to sell any of their more advanced systems due to I thought something Turkiye had done. Not entirely sure what it was anymore though I'm afraid. In any case rather then resolve that problem they instead decided to buy Russian then, and that just led to the next problem really. As the USA certainly wasn't going to sell various systems to Turkiye that needed to be integrated with an S-400 system then. That is because that meant classified USA information would end up with Russian manufacturers after all, which could be considered a bit of an unwanted defense risk for the USA. In that sense it sounds a bit more like a story where Turkiye in trying to stubbornly do things its own way wracked up a lot of extra costs having to ultimately develop their own systems, because they'd made themselves look unreliable for keeping defense secrets to one of their main allies. Ah well, hopefully their self made equipment works out better for their security goals in the end, considering the Ukraine was seems to have demonstrated that the S-400 might not have been all that great of a defense system and the Russians might have over promised a bit on its abilities.

He did not allow technology transfer and protected it. Transfers to Russia kept secret.
Can't help wondering how much the transfer technology portion of the deal contributed to that price. Seems like a simple ask without that. Technology transfer takes a good deal of trust too, not just money. i find it understandable why neither side could make a deal here. No need to blame either side imo. In my view, with the ambitious "Kızılelma" program by Baykar (the creators of the TB2 drone) focusing on a fighter jet drone powered by advanced AI, we may see a shift in focus toward Kızılelma by the 2030s. This could potentially take precedence over the Kaan project as drone and AI technologies continue to evolve. When it comes to missiles, Turkey is in a fortunate position, as we have already developed and are producing a wide range of options. While the Kaan jet won't be able to compete with the F-35 on day one, it’s important to note that the F-35 comes with significant limitations-it’s extremely expensive and operates under strict restrictions imposed by the United States. More importantly, if Turkey succeeds in developing its own jet engines, it will unlock enormous potential for exporting the Kaan. Just as drones revolutionized the Turkish defense industry, the Kaan jet has the potential to be a game-changer and a powerful addition to our capabilities.
F 35 was developed abd created by long list of countries in addition to USA: Poland, Turkey, Israel, Australia, Japan, UAE, Finland, Sweeden, Canada, Mexico. Thanks for the video! The prototype 0 of Kaan you see in the video. Prototype 1 and 2 will fly in 2025 and naturally, many things will change in terms of design. Actually, Prototype 0 was for general data collection.
Korea's Boramae isn't meant to be a 5th gen fighter. It was built to be a export worthy 4.5 gen multirole fighter. They are working on a full 5th gen model down the road but the KF-21 is a 4th gen plane with some stealth capabilities.
That's where the line gets blurred in today's world. When the U.S started to cut back major programs to focus on Iraq and Afghanistan, they heavily upgraded the F 18s, F 15s, and F 16s to be produced with fifth generation technology. As some others mentioned here, briefly, the reason Turkey obtained the S400's is they have been asking to US to price and sell Patriots, which they are entitled to, being a NATO member. But US has declined to even price the system, yet alone sell it to Turkey. So Turkey had no other option but buy the S-400's from Russia. Also Turkey is a part of F-35 manufacturing team, providing some vital parts for the F-35. When they were removed from the F-35 program, US wanted to find another provider for the parts that Turkey was manufacturing for the F-35, however, they realized that would be hard to change manufacturer for several vital parts this late, so as of recently, Turkey is still manufacturing important parts for the F-35. They are also manufacturing couple of the best military drones in the world right now,
If our politicians here in Brazil were smart, or patriotic, of which they are neither, they would purchase 36+12 more Gripen E/Fs and then make an order of 32 KAAN to have a Hi-Lo mix of Stealth/45th gen Multirole fighters to ensure that our air defense/superiority needs would be fulfilled up until the early 2050s.

I am Turkish and I know well enough that Brazil has an advanced aviation industry. Brazil is capable of developing its own fighter jet and you can always ask for technology transfer from other countries to speed things up. Turkiye is always open for bilateral technology transfer and I am sure there are a lot of things we can learn from Brazil as well, especially in commercial airplane industry.
Gripen is a very smart choice for Brazil… and what you may not understand is that Saab has done significant technology transfer - Brazilian Gripens are being built in Brazil. (Except for the first few) That matters a lot more for Brazil and its future than buying some second rate imitations from Türkiye. Instead … Brazil should BUILD its own 5th gen fighter after it learns what it can from building Gripen.
Turkiye didn't get the Patriot Missile System because in the sale, Turkiye had wanted full technology transfer as part of the deal, which means detailed information and schematics as well as the production processes for all of the major components and the tooling needed to build components. This was something that Raytheon, which manufactures the Patriot, point blank refused, especially at the price that Turkiye would be paying for the systems.
So why don't you mention that before Turkey bought the S400 air defense system, it knocked on the door of the United States of America many times to buy Patriots and was constantly blocked. Also, don't you mention that the S300 air defense system has been used in Greece, another NATO member, for years and that it has not caused any problems?

Turkey already showcased that they are very capable in producing cost/efficient systems like the Bayraktar drone. This aligns with their economic foreign policy.
Turkey massively relies on foreign powers to supply parts for its drones (TB series), so I doubt it has the capability to build this "5th Generation" aircraft on its own. Bangladesh needs to collaborate with turkey to make high spec weapons. we already have bayraktar tv2 drones but the air fleet is still pretty weak. So, turkey would be pretty good option to buy weapons from.
Turkey built the mid-bodies for the F-35 for the United States. so it wasn't that they just could no longer purchase the F-35, they were removed from building and participating in manufacturing those mid-bodies (which they actually built better than the United States). That then was moved in-house and also split between other contractors who already had a hand in producing parts for the F-35 elsewhere. Turkey is not a slouch when it comes to building aircraft... they basically had all the technology provided to them by the US until they got kicked out, so they took that experience and shoved it into the Kaan. So, honestly, good on them for that, but they did make a huge mistake purchasing the S400 which has shown to not be nearly as good as it was stated to be. (though its no slouch overall)
In my opinion, the United States needs to go back to doing everything in house, espionage has helped the Chinese, Russians, and Iranians massively by having so many split companies. They wanted to split it so that if anything did get stolen, it would be limited to whatever those partners had a hand in, unfortunately those partners left the 'big guy' vulnerable too.

Well I don't believe getting the S400 is a mistake after all the US Withrow their patriot system and refused to sell or let Turkey produce their own air defense system based on the US ones and that's happened even before they decided on the S400 whichi is the best air defense system by western experts not by just Russian if it's that bad it wouldn't rattle the US that much wether turkey buys them or not let's suppose they are junk then why the fear that they will expose the F35. Well the big thing with the F35 is is NEEDS a sever on the ground that's controled by the US for several of the functions. Pretty much all of the advanced features that makes the F35 awesome. Without that, they still should be able to fly it. Target things with the built in radar and shoot with the gun. So pretty much fly it like an f16. (As far as I understand everything) But that defeats the point of the F35. Its got SO MUCH TECHNOLOGY in it. Essentially it can target something and an aircraft with a less advanced targeting, and no stealth capabilities can use the information from the F35 to shoot at the target from REALLY far away while the F35 hides in enemy airspace. I think ONE country did something different than the rest as far as those capabilities. But I would love to see how others countrys and contractors went about that because I think the US was pretty smart with what they did. But I think (and hope they did ) at least put a "back door" in the F35 to essentially "lock out" whomever they deem shouldn't have access to that aircraft. And with how advanced these aircraft are they could probably take off fly and land by themselves to get away from who the US deems unfit
@@joewaun894 Well, this is true, however most countries just build a less capable export version and never give more than needed technology and always try to keep the maintenance of such strategic assets in house. For example, F35 has a special coating in order to help it's stealth capabilities. You cannot take a sample from the scraped paint after the repainting is done. all the removed paint and dust sent back to the US in special containers.
The F35 is definitely an aircraft that should not be purchased. Because for every operation, you need to request a code from America and the aircraft cannot take off without entering that code. As a staunch Europhile, the fact that Germany and France are still bickering about who builds what part of their future combat systems, *twenty years on,* drives me absolutely wild. Meanwhile the world has shifted around them. While they’re still flying airframes from the 1990s, Turkey and Korea are racing ahead. This is why I’ve always firmly believed that Europe needs to make defense a federal problem. Stop having different politicians going in circles about who builds what for the sake of protecting their own (relatively) tiny markets. Just make it *one* person’s job to get things started. At the end of the day, that the blasted thing _gets built_ matters far more than who builds it.
Its the exact opposite. European defense projects are failing because multinational projects complicate things. European nations should cooperate less in defense sector. Projects were more succesfull when every nation were building their own stuff.
As a staunch Turkophile I agree. Europe is not dynamic, everything takes too long. Seeing Turkiye as an ally would be a start as well. We don't mind buying military equipment from Europe but for some reason Europe (except Spain) still behaves like the lap dog of USA and equips itself with American weapons only. It is OK to buy technologically advanced things from Turkiye and strive for bilateral technology transfer. European politicians should grow a pair and stand up against USA. Treat Turkiye equally and don't be afraid of Russia so much, not because they are not a formidable force but because it is in Russia's interest to have Europe as an ally and an economic partner.

A reminder, Turkey wanted to buy and negotiated for years as the country has fully integrated NATO defense network system. At that time they also invested heavily to F-35 and shaped their industry to produce the parts they're assigned to. USA however, with all lobbying in its own delayed the purchase and did everything possible to not sign it, "concerns" like Patriot's spec might be leaked to Russia was one of them. Europe also did not wanted to sell/partner with Turkey and NATO itself also blocked the Chinese deal. So as a country bordering several conflict zones, Turkey bought S-400, and USA not only kicked the Turkey without refunding any spending on F-35, they also officially requested that Turkey needs to give them several S-400 they bought in order to study Russian system.
It feels satire, but western countries became quite circus themselves in this past decade. In response, Turkey decided to heavily invest its defense industry both Naval, Air and Land, as result they got pretty darn impressive products and got a good chunk of income as exporter. All thanks to NATO "allies" I guess.
Ah also USA was so concerned about Patriot systems, they later on send them to Ukraine and gifted several of it to Russia. Such a genius move.

Thank you. This is truly an objective assessment of the strive for Turkey to enter the 5th gen club. Turkey has made serious strides towards achieving self sufficiency in its defence sector which has been expedited by its allies.
The KAAN will be a true 5th generation multi role fighter allowing Turkey to project power as it sees, which should not be seen as a threat to anyone.
As far as we know, Türkiye wanted to buy the Patriot system from America 12 times, but refused to sell in America. The process with the S400 is America's fault. Additionally, there are Russian S400s in Syria right next to Israeli F35 planes. Therefore, the S400s are already watching the F 35s. The excuse given to Turkey was a bit funny. Türkiye has already produced its own long-range advanced air defense system called SIPER. It doesn't need S400 either.
So I guess the 74th Anti-aircraft Artillery Regiment (Patriot unit) of the Spanish Army at Incirlik doesn't count???

The issue here is that a country other than China, Russia and the United States produces such an aircraft and considering that Turkey does not impose restrictions on arms sales like Germany, this product will have a good sales potential when it is fully ready, after all, not every country can buy f-35 or su-57. That's why Türkiye is working to produce the critical systems of the aircraft (such as the engine) with its own resources. The fact that Türkiye is currently in the same category with the superpowers in terms of UAV is actually due to the embargoes it has faced for a long time. The sector has overcome many difficulties and thanks to the systems it has made local and national as a result of long efforts and R&D, today they have the right to sell to any country they want, anywhere in the world, without anyone's permission.

Math doesn’t change ! Wind tunnels /fluid dynamics is the same DOESNT matter where you from. at some point everyone is going to end up at the most optimal design that is going to be very similar. Just like in formula 1 all the cars look similar except for small details.
It is about reflection of electromagnetic waves. Low radar cross section needs special geometry. Smallest radar cross section is the lambda design known as flying wing geometry without vertical stabilizers. But lambda design is has very low maneuverability. So for stealth fighter jets second most efficient geometry is used called cropped diamond geometry. f-35, f-22, su-57, j-20 and Kaan they all have cropped diamond design. With bended vertival slabilizers. So they are looking alike...

It's an ambitious project which I've been following for some years, during which I've learnt about the capabilities of Turkish defense industry firms (5 of which are in the top 100), which is on par with the best of them on most fronts; I approached it on defense forums with much skepticism at first as I didn't know about Turkey's capabilities but I soon learnt that this is a serious project. We'll wait and see what comes of it but so far it's been promising. Even as a 4.5 fighter it'd be a great achievement as this is their first attempt.
Even though this was our first attempt to build a modern fighter jet, it wasn't our first attempt to build our aviation industry. What we had after first world war was destroyed under the guise of Marshall plans and Truman doctrines. Turkish aviation industry did build several planes and even exported some trainers back then. But the US decided our role in the middle east was a farming country and actually pressured government to shut down its airplane industry and even gifted us some airplanes they were decommissioning. Only after Lyndon B. Johnsons infamous letter (in 1964) to prime minister İsmet İnönü Türkiye realized that nothing is free and start rebuilding a defence industry after the US embargos in 1974.
It's understandable considering Turkey was the Ottoman Empire which had adversarial relationship with the US and much of the West for some time

The success of the Tai TF X program or best known as Kaan fighter jet as the first 5th Gen prototype has been produced by a nation that is not The US, China and Russia hasn't come from mere void or luck, the aerospace industry of Turkey has been capable of doing various projects and collaborations. Turkey produce and assemble and do maintaince of the F16 and black hawk, and they were a partner in producing parts for the F35 sleath fighter program. TAI is Lockheed Martin strategic partner while TEI the engine manufacturer procudes engines for General Electric they also collaborated on the European A400 atlas strategic airlifter thus the nation have the infrastructure and knowhow of producing aircrafts or Nato-standard equipments related to aviation in general not only that they are on par with China and The US in terms of highly sophisticated UAV and UCAV in both public and private sector like the TB2, TB3, Akinci, Kizilelma jet powered, the Anka S, the Aksungur and Anka 3 not even the whole European union comes close in terms of drones manufacturing. The kaan is going to be reality but producing it will require huge efforts, financial support and commitment, more expertise especially in the engine sector which is still the weak link and more important the time that such projects take a decade from the prototype to full manufacturing capabilities and that's not a handicap but a process that all nations who seeks or already have those 5th Gen platforms went through at the end it's a feat because a nation outside of the superpowers did it
why not just buy f35 from america? is it pressures of nationalism or turkey fears some hidden dead switch that america can turn off? the production and research and development has a crippling cost even for the largest economy on earth. f22 is 90's tech and f35 is early 2001's-2006 tech. america has had 25 years to pull ahead and fine tune the production and digital tech. the logistics of 25 years of production is probably insurmountable, from 350m per aircraft to the price of an f16 at 100m give or take 40m for capability (vertical, or carrier, or short take off).

There is nothing in between TF10.000 and TF35.000 engines. They are already working on it like their lives depends on it. We also made TEI-TS1400 Turboshaft Enginee for our domestically produces helicopter "GOKBEY" and it is already flying with it and first deliveries completed to our military.

Greece has S-300 not S-400 and it was given to them by Cyprus because Turkey said it would invade Cyprus if Cyprus develops a functional military. The single most important being the shape of the airframe and the tolerances it is manufactured to. It does no good to put up a thin absorbing layer on a panel that is going to flatly reflect a radio signal back to its antenna. The paint just can't deter the whole signal. It's just as important that the seams between panels are as tight as possible. A 3/8" seam is enough to provide a return.
You should take a closer look at the S-400 angle. It was more of a failure of NATO than Turkey itself. Turkey always wanted to get the Patriot systems from USA but the price asked for those systems were very steep, perhaps deliberately to keep Turkey vulnerable. So Turkey went ahead with a Chinese system. That deal was cancelled. Various reasons are being given for that; that the company producing the missiles was blacklisted by US Congress or that Chinese chose not to transfer technology. Only three options remained; Patriots, S-400s or the Eurosam. Euroepeans didn't want to partner with Turkey. USA continued to ask an unacceptable price for the Patriots. Only Russia remained and Turkey was forced to buy S-400 as a form of blood money for downing the Russian jet near the Syrian border.

I've heard something a bit different on this as well. With the USA not wanting to sell any of their more advanced systems due to I thought something Turkiye had done. Not entirely sure what it was anymore though I'm afraid.
In any case rather then resolve that problem they instead decided to buy Russian then, and that just led to the next problem really. As the USA certainly wasn't going to sell various systems to Turkiye that needed to be integrated with an S-400 system then. That is because that meant classified USA information would end up with Russian manufacturers after all, which could be considered a bit of an unwanted defense risk for the USA.
In that sense it sounds a bit more like a story where Turkiye in trying to stubbornly do things its own way wracked up a lot of extra costs having to ultimately develop their own systems, because they'd made themselves look unreliable for keeping defense secrets to one of their main allies.
Ah well, hopefully their self made equipment works out better for their security goals in the end, considering the Ukraine was seems to have demonstrated that the S-400 might not have been all that great of a defense system and the Russians might have over promised a bit on its abilities.

Also in 2028 a Turkish domestically designed and produced turbofan engine capable of producing 35.000 pound trust (175 Kn) will be integrated in the aircraft and start test flight with the domestic engine. These flight test with the domestic engine will take 2 years and In 2030 the aircraft’s (block-20) plans to go in to mass production with the domestic engine.
Some people may ask; Does Turkiye has the technology to produce an engine at all? Yes we do. Turkiye is the biggest parts supplier to the latest America GE GenX engines. Look it up. And there are more then 45 different aircraft engines with over 1500 parts that Turkiye is producing.
TRmotor and TEI are working on the domestic engine for the KAAN since 2018. The timeline is to make the first test flight in 2028 and ready for serial production in 2030. That would mean a program timeline of 10 years from start to first flight and a total program timeline of 12 years from start to serial production. So this engine is not been made out of thin air.
Production rate will be 24/year and can be increased if needed

Look at the F-35 project. There was a Turkish flag on the F-35s from the manufacturers and America was stupid to kick the Turks out of the F-35s. America did another stupid thing and established a YPG terror army on Turkiye's border and offended Turkiye.
Turkey didn't really care about the F-35 since Kaan was planned in 2010 it would be a second 5 gen fighter on the arsenal together with the F-35 but at least the Turks saw the real face of the yankees.

I’d like to share some insights. While it’s officially announced as a 5th-generation fighter, the initial version of Turkey’s Kaan jet will likely align more closely with 4th or 4.5-generation capabilities. As you know, one of the defining features of a 4.5-generation fighter is the inclusion of an AESA radar, which Turkey has already developed under the "MURAD" project.
Achieving true 5th-generation status requires an engine capable of supercruise, a technology we have yet to produce or even begin development on. However, Turkey’s engine development program is progressing rapidly, with plans to introduce 4.5-generation engines featuring afterburners and sufficient thrust capacity by the early 2030s. I believe that by the mid-2030s, we could reach 5th-generation engine capabilities.
When it comes to 6th-generation technologies, Turkey is well-positioned thanks to its advancements in drone technology. The country is already running a test program for fighter-jet-controlled drones, using platforms like the Turkish light combat jet "Hürjet" and the stealth drone bomber "Anka-3." The Kaan jet is also being designed with future 6th-generation requirements in mind, ensuring readiness for upcoming technological leaps.
In my view, with the ambitious "Kızılelma" program by Baykar (the creators of the TB2 drone) focusing on a fighter jet drone powered by advanced AI, we may see a shift in focus toward Kızılelma by the 2030s. This could potentially take precedence over the Kaan project as drone and AI technologies continue to evolve.
When it comes to missiles, Turkey is in a fortunate position, as we have already developed and are producing a wide range of options. While the Kaan jet won't be able to compete with the F-35 on day one, it’s important to note that the F-35 comes with significant limitations-it’s extremely expensive and operates under strict restrictions imposed by the United States.
More importantly, if Turkey succeeds in developing its own jet engines, it will unlock enormous potential for exporting the Kaan. Just as drones revolutionized the Turkish defense industry, the Kaan jet has the potential to be a game-changer and a powerful addition to our capabilities.
Getting one has strict requirements, not operating one.
F 35 was developed abd created by long list of countries in addition to USA: Poland, Turkey, Israel, Australia, Japan, UAE, Finland, Sweeden, Canada, Mexico.
USA had a lot of knowledge and experience in planesbefore they developed F 35. How Turkey can compete with USA and long list of countries budget and experience. Turkeish economy is very small with a lot of problems. Turkey never build planes. They don't have scientific base for building a planes.

@@leon19736it is very much a question of strategic flexibility. Reliance on the U.S. comes with a laundry list of limitations. The war in Ukraine has shown that those limitations can be crippling. It boggles my mind that Biden only gave Ukraine permission to bomb Russia *this week,* after 1,000 days of war. I don’t blame Turkey for looking at that and deciding that nope, they want options. Frankly, it amazes me that more European countries, or the Union itself, haven’t made the same decision.

Thanks for the video! The prototype 0 of Kaan you see in the video. Prototype 1 and 2 will fly in 2025 and naturally, many things will change in terms of design. Actually, Prototype 0 was for general data collection.

Korea's Boramae isn't meant to be a 5th gen fighter. It was built to be a export worthy 4.5 gen multirole fighter. They are working on a full 5th gen model down the road but the KF-21 is a 4th gen plane with some stealth capabilities.
That's where the line gets blurred in today's world.
When the U.S started to cut back major programs to focus on Iraq and Afghanistan, they heavily upgraded the F 18s, F 15s, and F 16s to be produced with fifth generation technology.

Turkey is working on the development but it will logically take many years, but why not build and test the airplane by then, determine strengths and weaknesses, and make improvements. You can change the engine in 10 years, but by then you will have already produced many airplanes and gained a lot of experience. I'm sure you know that, but they don't begrudge the Turks it, hence the negativity.

As some others mentioned here, briefly, the reason Turkey obtained the S400's is they have been asking to US to price and sell Patriots, which they are entitled to, being a NATO member. But US has declined to even price the system, yet alone sell it to Turkey. So Turkey had no other option but buy the S-400's from Russia. Also Turkey is a part of F-35 manufacturing team, providing some vital parts for the F-35. When they were removed from the F-35 program, US wanted to find another provider for the parts that Turkey was manufacturing for the F-35, however, they realized that would be hard to change manufacturer for several vital parts this late, so as of recently, Turkey is still manufacturing important parts for the F-35. They are also manufacturing couple of the best military drones in the world right now,

Well, lol if my Turkish politician's were smart. They should invite Brazil and its embraer company for joint ventures. Also I think that Brazils C390, would make a great cargo aircraft addition to the Turkish armed forces.
I am Turkish and I know well enough that Brazil has an advanced aviation industry. Brazil is capable of developing its own fighter jet and you can always ask for technology transfer from other countries to speed things up. Turkiye is always open for bilateral technology transfer and I am sure there are a lot of things we can learn from Brazil as well, especially in commercial airplane industry.
Gripen is a very smart choice for Brazil… and what you may not understand is that Saab has done significant technology transfer - Brazilian Gripens are being built in Brazil. (Except for the first few)
That matters a lot more for Brazil and its future than buying some second rate imitations from Türkiye.
Instead … Brazil should BUILD its own 5th gen fighter after it learns what it can from building Gripen.
You didn't mention that our “ally” the USA hadn't sold the patriot system to Türkiye , the second biggest army and his ally and NATO country.
Turkiye didn't get the Patriot Missile System because in the sale, Turkiye had wanted full technology transfer as part of the deal, which means detailed information and schematics as well as the production processes for all of the major components and the tooling needed to build components. This was something that Raytheon, which manufactures the Patriot, point blank refused, especially at the price that Turkiye would be paying for the systems.

So why don't you mention that before Turkey bought the S400 air defense system, it knocked on the door of the United States of America many times to buy Patriots and was constantly blocked. Also, don't you mention that the S300 air defense system has been used in Greece, another NATO member, for years and that it has not caused any problems?
Turkiye purchased the S-400 because the United States refused to sell them the patriot platform/system beforehand.
This is why a country's reputation matters. When Russia reveals its 5th gen fighter, everyone jumps in and dissects its specs to find any exaggerated claims. That's because Russia is a dick and people don't like Russia and its blatant lies. But when Turkey (and South Korea, go team,) builds their domestic jets and be modest about things when needed, military enthusiasts and aerospace nerds around the world shower those new jets with praise and blessings. The reason is simple. A jet that looks good and cool is a jet that looks good and cool - even when it may or may not be on par with more well-known American options such as F-16, F-15, and F-35.
So yeah, nice jet. I like it. I'm just a simple aerospace nerd and I love it when I see a friendly country build a new jet and be proud of it.

It’s really not the case for Turkey’s aviation industry. When Kaan was first revealed, Americans just made fun of it by saying that it’s a “f-22 from Temu”, “f-35 at home”, “illegitimate child of f-22 and f-35” etc. etc.
Whenever Turkish defense industry reaches a new milestone, westerners either try to downplay the achievement or try to claim that it was actually the work of western companies and Turkey secretly bought it or copied it. Implying that Turks are an inferior race who are simply incapable of developing new technologies.
KAAN is an empty shell not developed, F-35 airframe costs are minimal compared to the tech and software development of a F-35 5th gen jet.

Turkey already showcased that they are very capable in producing cost/efficient systems like the Bayraktar drone. This aligns with their economic foreign policy.
Turkey massively relies on foreign powers to supply parts for its drones (TB series), so I doubt it has the capability to build this "5th Generation" aircraft on its own.
Personally I think it could, but we all know it can't.
Politically, financially and practically.
They would much rather buy F35s given the chance and maybe these plane announcements are to help get the F35s indirectly 😉

Bangladesh needs to collaborate with turkey to make high spec weapons. we already have bayraktar tv2 drones but the air fleet is still pretty weak. So, turkey would be pretty good option to buy weapons from.

Turkey built the mid-bodies for the F-35 for the United States. so it wasn't that they just could no longer purchase the F-35, they were removed from building and participating in manufacturing those mid-bodies (which they actually built better than the United States). That then was moved in-house and also split between other contractors who already had a hand in producing parts for the F-35 elsewhere. Turkey is not a slouch when it comes to building aircraft... they basically had all the technology provided to them by the US until they got kicked out, so they took that experience and shoved it into the Kaan. So, honestly, good on them for that, but they did make a huge mistake purchasing the S400 which has shown to not be nearly as good as it was stated to be. (though its no slouch overall)
In my opinion, the United States needs to go back to doing everything in house, espionage has helped the Chinese, Russians, and Iranians massively by having so many split companies. They wanted to split it so that if anything did get stolen, it would be limited to whatever those partners had a hand in, unfortunately those partners left the 'big guy' vulnerable too.

Well I don't believe getting the S400 is a mistake after all the US Withrow their patriot system and refused to sell or let Turkey produce their own air defense system based on the US ones and that's happened even before they decided on the S400 whichi is the best air defense system by western experts not by just Russian if it's that bad it wouldn't rattle the US that much wether turkey buys them or not let's suppose they are junk then why the fear that they will expose the F35. Anyway buying the S400 is also a strategic decision to fill thegap untill Turkey produce they own air defense systems which they are doing right now with the Siper and Hisar systems. I also find it strange that the US gets ferious over Turkey getting the Russian system and won't do the same when their ally South Korea relied on a Russian missile system which is part of the S400 Arsenal to produce their own system

Well the big thing with the F35 is is NEEDS a sever on the ground that's controled by the US for several of the functions. Pretty much all of the advanced features that makes the F35 awesome. Without that, they still should be able to fly it. Target things with the built in radar and shoot with the gun. So pretty much fly it like an f16. (As far as I understand everything)
But that defeats the point of the F35. Its got SO MUCH TECHNOLOGY in it. Essentially it can target something and an aircraft with a less advanced targeting, and no stealth capabilities can use the information from the F35 to shoot at the target from REALLY far away while the F35 hides in enemy airspace. I think ONE country did something different than the rest as far as those capabilities.
But I would love to see how others countrys and contractors went about that because I think the US was pretty smart with what they did. But I think (and hope they did ) at least put a "back door" in the F35 to essentially "lock out" whomever they deem shouldn't have access to that aircraft. And with how advanced these aircraft are they could probably take off fly and land by themselves to get away from who the US deems unfit

@@joewaun894 Well, this is true, however most countries just build a less capable export version and never give more than needed technology and always try to keep the maintenance of such strategic assets in house. For example, F35 has a special coating in order to help it's stealth capabilities. You cannot take a sample from the scraped paint after the repainting is done. all the removed paint and dust sent back to the US in special containers.
The F35 is definitely an aircraft that should not be purchased. Because for every operation, you need to request a code from America and the aircraft cannot take off without entering that code. Even if it is a simple gun that makes you a slave, you should never buy it and you should never bow down to anyone. Turkiye saw this and managed to get itself kicked out of the project. Then it started its own project.
The name Kaan comes from Oguz Kagan, the ancestor of the Turks. According to many sources and theories, it is called Dhul-Qarnayn. Turks are an ancient nation with a written history of 5 thousand years. The Turks founded 16 empires and ruled the world for thousands of years. In World War I, we fought against almost the entire world alone (England, America, Russia, Italy, France, Greece, Japan). That's why it took us 100 years to recover and come back.

As a staunch Europhile, the fact that Germany and France are still bickering about who builds what part of their future combat systems, *twenty years on,* drives me absolutely wild. Meanwhile the world has shifted around them. While they’re still flying airframes from the 1990s, Turkey and Korea are racing ahead.
This is why I’ve always firmly believed that Europe needs to make defense a federal problem. Stop having different politicians going in circles about who builds what for the sake of protecting their own (relatively) tiny markets. Just make it *one* person’s job to get things started. At the end of the day, that the blasted thing _gets built_ matters far more than who builds it.
Its the exact opposite. European defense projects are failing because multinational projects complicate things. European nations should cooperate less in defense sector. Projects were more succesfull when every nation were building their own stuff.
As a staunch Turkophile I agree. Europe is not dynamic, everything takes too long. Seeing Turkiye as an ally would be a start as well. We don't mind buying military equipment from Europe but for some reason Europe (except Spain) still behaves like the lap dog of USA and equips itself with American weapons only. It is OK to buy technologically advanced things from Turkiye and strive for bilateral technology transfer. European politicians should grow a pair and stand up against USA. Treat Turkiye equally and don't be afraid of Russia so much, not because they are not a formidable force but because it is in Russia's interest to have Europe as an ally and an economic partner.

Treaty reform is necessary if Europe is to ever be an independent power or be able to accept new members. it's slated to gain those 5th gen capabilities in the forthcoming blocks. Probably will achieve them before Kaan is operational.
The internal weapon bay space has supposedly already been designed in the fuselage by Lockheed Martin, the co-designer of KF-21.
