WARNING: removing plate in the way he has will likely break the friction spring.
Take off the small throat/needle plate first then push opposite way (aka slide to close biggerplate).
Now use piece of wood on far left side and tap with a hammer very very lightly it pops off.
Thank you to uploader, just wanted to throw my two cents in to avoid people damaging their beautiful machines

Thanks for the video . I had to clean the bobbin case of a newly-acquired singer 66 that had some rust on it. But for the life of me I cannot get the bobbin case back into position. It is the new style bobbin positioning system. I think tomorrow I will go to my sewing machine and be able to put the bobbin case back in I did not realize you can move the retaining clip like that.

thanks so much! having fun working on my inherited Singer 66. Question - what is the red - looks like felt - when cleaning out all the dust bunnies, I pulled on this in mine (it was brown on top like all the other dust bunnies) but it was red inside and felt like felt so stopped pulling. What is the purpose?

This felt was designed be there and needs a drop of sewing machine oil to provide lubrication for the bobbin race. It can get really dirty and awful - so tempting to get rid of it! Some machines are missing the felt for that reason. It can be replaced (and probably should be if it is ancient!). Cut a new felt piece and adding fresh sewing machine oil. Apparently the felt discs (often red) that are used to protect the machine finish from the thread spool can be cut and used for this purpose. The machine will be happier to have that bit of oil and will likely run more smoothly and quietly.

Can the feed dog be lowered on a Singer 66-16? If so, how?

Hi! I am just starting this on 2 old 66s . That little tab that you first move to the right will not budge. And it is not as long as yours. Can I just unscrew the thing and clean it ALL? IT SURE NEEDS IT!

The older models have a screw so yes.
