  • Another benchside chat. This time, I dissect, clean, and polish the bobbin case positioning bracket of Meredith's Singer 66. This is more benchside chat than a how-to, but regardless, you may find it interesting.

    You are incredible! I have recently acquired a 1924 66 redeye treadle and your knowledge has been wonderful Bob.

    Its decals are its history, she's been worked. Ambivalent. They are common. Wouldn't be like defacing the Mona Lisa...Sorry about the Goldwing Club, sad. Hope there are still Goldwings out there! Would love a cruise on one.

    I would only take the crud off. Good 👍 job

    I would take the decals off. Or see about making it all black. She is a beautiful machine regardless!

    You just had to show me that I have to take that apart to clean it LOL. I hope I do not have too much trouble with it!

    Thanks Bob. I learned a lot about taking the bobbin case positioning bracket apart. It is nice to see even you have difficulties getting things back together. Looking forward to part 2. Love these old beauties!

    Great video Bob. I was looking at that rotary tool yesterday. I have one that is too fast for delicate work and one is too weak. I also bought a set of round brushes for an airbrush work great for the holes. Thanks for the videos

    Bob, it was bugging me about the holes. My anxiety left me as soon as you cleaned them out.

    Will the machine have an old hand crank or a reproduction? If a repro, I'd love to see what you can do to make them more workable. I have a repro on a Red-Eye 66, and my hubby and I sure had to finagle it a lot to get it to work well enough.

      She has the hand cranks, I believe they are all vintage

    What do use to strip down to the black paint?

    • @BobFowlerWorkshop
      @BobFowlerWorkshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      If it were to strip to just the black paint, I could use polishing compound to get the top layer off (it's falling off anyway) which would also take the decals

    Hi Bob, when you clear coat a machine do you use shellac?

    • @patfrey7242
      @patfrey7242 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shellac is used in French Polishing. It's a wood finishing technique that results in a very high gloss surface. I have seen some use this technique on machines with some success. It's time consuming for sure.

    • @stevenmpeter
      @stevenmpeter ปีที่แล้ว

      @@patfrey7242 I was wondering if shellac was sprayed or if he used an enamel spray instead.

    • @patfrey7242
      @patfrey7242 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevenmpeter Shellac is not sprayed. A cloth ball is made and dipped in Shellac and cut with some alcohol and a tich of oil and rubbed on the surface. Many many coats are involved. Best to just google it. Personally, I like to paint them with a good auto paint. Prime it first. Then use new decals that you can purchase from Keeler Sales in FL. Then two coats of a good clear.

      @@patfrey7242 Shellac is sold as a spray. Can be found at any big box store.

      @@stevenmpeter True, but In the technique I was describing spray shellac is not used. I don't know of anyone that uses Shellac spray as a clear coat on machines..

    Did you use white rouge to begin with, or on a second pass?

    • @BobFowlerWorkshop
      @BobFowlerWorkshop  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I used white compound from the start.

      That depends on the company that makes the compound. This is the white compound I use:
