    I've always thought that "have been/has been" is a continuous action up to the present. Ex. I have been writing a song, which means I'm still writing the song up until this moment. Then I also thought had been should always be accompanied by a past action and should never be said on its own. Ex. They had been swimming before they went to the house. Lol. Thanks for this refresher.

      Usually "since" needs the exactly moment expressed by : month (July) , year (2021), time (3.00 p.m), day (Monday).

  • @natel3650
    @natel3650 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great explantion! But I'm a little confused! Since I ear native English speakers use this structure for actions that are still ongoing in the present!
    Like: 'I have been learning French for 5 years (and still learning now).', 'I've been working hard all my life', etc.
    There's even a song (by an American singer) called: 'I've Been Daydreaming My Entire Life'.
    I would appreciate it if you would explain that!

  • @melvinpristyo2877
    @melvinpristyo2877 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You rock ! An amazing lesson.
    Your example "the house is ready to sell. They've been working on (fixing) it for 6 months".
    [1] If we change it to the present perfect tense ".........They've worked on (fixed) it for 6 months", what's the difference then? because both tenses can convey resultative meanings.
    [2] I have the following sentence:
    He's stopped smoking for a year.
    Now, he has lung cancer because he's been smoking heavily for 20 years before.
    Is the sentence grammatically correct ?
    I would highly appreciate your explanation.

    • @mrmememe777
      @mrmememe777  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They're both correct. "They've worked on it" expresses that the action is done. "They've been working on it" expresses that it continued for some time.

    • @melvinpristyo2877
      @melvinpristyo2877 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for your reply.
      Can we use the present perfect continuous to indicate a finished action with the present connection like the following sentence?
      He has stopped smoking for a year. He has lung cancer because he has been smoking heavily for 20 years before.
      I'd highly appreciate your clear explanation.

    At 5:52 it sounds tricky becouse I though the past perfect continuous should take place just before the second action expressed by past simple. In your example a lot of time has passed since the end of the run until the moment the guy ley on the sofa. Could you have said " He went to sleep on the sofa because he had ran (before/a lot) " ? without say when . Past simple if you would have said when "He went to sleep on the sofa because he ran in the morning". Thanks.
