Very interesting game. A few points stuck out to me: The rest of this is strategy stuff, but Columbo recovered an extra die on turns 11/12, and didn't discard the palantir of orthanc. No turn 1 Aragorn with a ring in exchange for Saruman, it feels bad to give shadow a turn 1 minion, but in my opinion it's worth it to go up to 5 dice as FP, and to give yourself 60% chance to get a turn 2 gandalf, at least when the alternative is moving 3 times against 4 dice. Going high pass route at 10:30, a very understandable play, but I think in a corruption focussed game the extra move and giving the shadow nazgul trains can actually hurt more than the extra tile or two from moria. Also you want strider to be crowned asap in my opinion, so the closer to gondor the better. Gregg downgrading two elites instead of taking an elite as a casualty at 33:40, with the captain of the west from boromir there's no reason to hold onto the 5th unit, especially since in this case it would've made room for house of the stewards. Columbo not committing any units to Onslaught at ~ 49:00, again understandable, but I wonder that you don't swing for the fences here and commit 4 hits here. 1/16 chance to kill gandy and take DA on the spot, and while you don't want the FP to sortie after playing cirdans/imrahil and start mustering in DA again, they are running very low on gondor forces, so even if you score 2-3 hits you can still pull the wk/nazgul out before they sortie, and they waste a lot of dice trying to sortie out just to be able to muster in DA again. The real danger is scoring 1/0 hits and having to either stop and risk dead men, or pressing and risking dying in combat. Mustering with a ring at 50:00, every ring is an extra elite in a stronghold you're going to have to kill, so it seems never worth it to use a ring this way to ultimately get an elite outside a stronghold. Especially because you can just move Aragorn into lorien here, stopping the dead men threat, but doing something you were going to do next turn anyway. Gregg not pressing at ~ 54:20, you can press at least twice here, that's ~27 dice, which should be enough to score 3 6s, and finish the game, and the first 2 hits you take from the shadow are an extra press each, without affecting the number of dice you can roll because of the 2 captains of the west. Whereas with Columbo rolling 8 dice on the next turn, and only needing 5 attacks, its not out of the question that he might roll 5 attacks and be able to retake orthanc/mount gundabad. Anyways, both very well played, always great to see an FPMV.
Loving the replay commentary! On my first rewatch, I’m surprised how many silly misjudgements I made throughout, but it was a pleasant first FPMV nonetheless!
15:30 I normally agree that you don't want to let Aragorn fight in MT, but if there's ever a time to do so, it's when Boromir is also there and you are sitting on House Of The Stewards AND Guards Of The Citadel. Maybe it has some merit this game, especially with SP moving at this glacial rate which likely allows the rest of Gondor to fully muster at the same time. 53:30 Using Shadows to Mount Gram would get SP an extra Nazgul, but...is it worth spending the card just for that? Quite possibly yes considering they might be about to lose the game, but 9 HP vs 6 hp isn't exactly a comfortable position for FP. 56:00 I completely agree with your recommendation to press. I wouldn't worry too much about SP winning next turn or them mustering in MtG, I don't see a real path to 10 for them and you can attack before they get to play a card, but there's a pretty decent chance they could take back Orthanc 59:30 Nice last ditch desperation play, but I think it was a missplay to play Devilry instead of Onslaught. Either shield wall, daylight or heroic makes Devilry winning impossible, and even against no card, onslaught is expected +2 instead of +0.83, assuming you can lose the 4, but even just losing 2 is still better. With the 3 he took back, Onslaught would be worse as the dice fell, but I do think the odds were better.
hey - just send me a DM on Discord with the replay and the passwords (pls check if your opponent is ok with me making a vid) and I'll try my best to make a vid :)
I guess the Carrock guy is the Beornings?, Frodo sees there lands being set aflame briefly when using the seat of seeing.
