    Hi guy's, I'm from the Smoky mtns of western North Carolina close to the Tennessee line. I've hunted/found many points here where i live but nothing like you guy's have found in your video's. I've been interested in points and flintknapping for years and read about the subject but not until now, seeing your video have i understood how these points are made. i don't know if i just wasn't "getting" what i was reading or indeed a visual interpretation was what i needed but now, I get it. Amazing.

    Good job on the video guys.
    I'm glad to see you both survived "cicadapocalypse 2016"!!!
    There are three things I will never forget about this knap-in: the constant roar of cicadas, your disdain for chigger-wood chert, and the inevitable crazy lady showing up at your camp which, by the way, I had absolutely nothing to do with.
    Thanks for allowing me to hang out with you guys and I look forward to the Labor day event. Take care and be safe out there.

    Hope you enjoyed your time in Ohio. We baked some good flint down in those hills a couple million years ago. Nice recap of the knap in.

    Great notching demo. You guys cranked out some great work at the ridge. I hope to get there one of these days, I'd love to meet you both in person.

    Looks like you had a good time at the knap in . Those cicadas are really pretty good grilled medium rare with some K C Masterpiece glaze on them , or at least that is what I've heard . You could have set up a food stand on the side , from the looks of it , and made some extra money . lol . Cool video as always . I liked the tour around the event and the notching instruction segment is stellar . Thanks for the adventure with you two. GL & HH . Happy knapping . --- Butch

    Enjoyed the vid.Always entertaining.Love the flame throwing prior to the night knapping.lol funny stuff.I've tried roy's technique of notching too,and while he makes it look easy,in reality for me,it stinks.:>) Of course material makes a big difference.Hornstone is pretty hard and easy to stall in notching.Nice demo.Hey,,I didn't notice those step fractures,your right.:>)

    Killer video guys one question why do you prefer a notched like that compared to a flat nail notcher?

    Was this a Nap-in, or a Knap-in? Heh heh ...... I couldn't resist, but in my defense, you all set me up! Lots of beautiful material and points/blades on display - tnx for covering this event for us --- good job as always. My Dovetail would turn into a thumbscraper.. LOL!

    I am going to make one of those notching tools.There are a lot of different types of welding rod.Will any do, for the notching?

    • @SenecaRelics
      @SenecaRelics  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Islayk.... We assume any type of rod will work. It doesn't necessarily have to be welding rod. It's just what we use. A small steel nail may work just the same... The rod we use is a 3/32" dia Tigg rod... Good luck and let us know how it goes for you.

    • @SenecaRelics
      @SenecaRelics  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @MMCM.... Yes, we will be attending the Flint Ridge events this year... The Spring event is the weekend of May 25-26.... The Fall event is the weekend of Aug 31 - Sep 1st... They are always held on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. We normally arrive a couple days early and stay until Sunday at both events.

    Nice vid guys. I just have two questions:
    1. What kind of insects do you have inside the blue container?
    2. Why there are so many of them?

    • @SenecaRelics
      @SenecaRelics  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @DMaydana.... 1. They are Cicadas... (Some people call them "Jar Flies" around here...) We didn't put them there... They crawled in on their own... 2. Once every 17 years, they hatch and crawl out of the ground to torment another generation. We were unlucky enough to have our campsite set up right in the epicenter of the hatching hoard. It was frightening... They were in everything. Millions of them.

    +SenecaRelics Great video Mark and Nelson..... On your custom notching punch, is there a reason you don't make the point or nib a bit longer, or is it just worn a little ? Great tool btw

    • @SenecaRelics
      @SenecaRelics  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @D.Allen.... We have tried using longer nibs for notching but have found that we have better control with the shorter ones. We will use the longer nibs for thicker points.

    • @darrellallen7931
      @darrellallen7931 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +SenecaRelics Thanks for replying guys, and makes perfect sense to me. I would like to make me one of these tools ( if that is cool with y'all ? ) using a Stainless Tig welding rod, and turning it down on my lathe with a slightly different profile than you have, and will add double set screws so I can adjust length as the nib wears. Love your vids BTW, y'all are too funny. ;-)

    • @SenecaRelics
      @SenecaRelics  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      We considered making tools with setscrews and adjustable nibs but we figured we could make a dozen of these in minutes with a simple drill and a file. We consider them as disposable tools easily replaced. One single notcher can last us months. Good luck on your design and let us know how it goes.!

    Do you need any sort of membership to set up a camp there I've been there before
    and wanted to know

    • @SenecaRelics
      @SenecaRelics  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Ruth… No membership is needed for the knap-in... It is open to anyone to camp there... Just go to the pavilion, register, pay your small fee and find a spot...

    Glad you guys made it through the cicada plague...they make the fish fat...in school we paid a metal head $5 to eat one...he smiled and the wings covered his teeth...priceless memory...dude didn't flinch.
    Roys points are wicked cool.
    I bet the Arabs, Doctors and Silicon Valley execs love their collections lol I kid I kid...I dream of owning one of his Dogs someday..I'm not a knapper but I know his quality and coveted material source is unmatched.
    Did y'all go to Nethers up the road?
    And how many acoustic guitars were at that fire each night?

    • @SenecaRelics
      @SenecaRelics  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      @beveled.... Roy's quality of stone (and skills) is unmatched... Even though It is possible to obtain some of his $tone, duplicating his work still eludes us... LOL... We didn't go to Nethers. We have no practical way of treating the material (yet)... Therefore, we purchase what we need from suppliers at the Ridge event.We saw no musicians this Spring but the Cicada-Symphony was going strong. There will be plenty of music at the Fall event. For sure.... We will be there... You should too.

    • @beveledblade
      @beveledblade 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you have to heat treat nethers?
      There was some chalcedony type stuff there...I have to bring you guys some mozarkrite from Missouri if I make it up there...its a little over an hour away...but getting off work weekends are a nightmare... I may have to do an evening appearance. I'll bring my keyboards and play eerie theremin sounds as you guys sleep.

    • @SenecaRelics
      @SenecaRelics  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      @beveled... We have knapped on raw Ridge before but we prefer it treated.... Looks (and knaps) a lot better... Driving 1 hour+ is not bad... It takes us over 3 hours to get there. The Fall event will be underway early if you cant make a weekend visit.Would like to give the Mozarkite another try. I made a point last weekend from that material. We have only a couple of small pieces of it. Hope to meet you at the Ridge.... (Ok to leave your keyboard at home)....
