Alive MUST have cracks, must be a litle strained, must be shouted out - to convey the emotion and the meaning of the song! For years, vocalists were trying to sound like Britney, with that sort of raspy quality she has. Before that it was Whitney. Before that it was Aretha. It's always been done.
Could you explain how to do the intentional breaks like Sia does? Also maybe you can watch some of her Chandelier performances where she does the intentional breaks in the chorus

B4 I watch the video, I think Sia's creative and brilliant vocals will be on top, right next to brilliant contemporary and past artists, i.e., Bey, Mariah, Aretha, etc. There's room for improvement, of course, but her shortcomings are mostly "overcome" by her technique and style.
