Depp was being honest by the "paycheck" comment. After only 3 seasons of 21J.S., he wanted out saying "he hated working on a show about narc's in high school arresting already troubled kids & ruining their future with criminal records." It was an moral judgement not a career choice. He risked leaving a popular show & failing in films. Think about it, his 1st film was a John Water's film (Crybaby 1990) a cult filmmaker who never made a profitable film, but it was a success !
@John Dough Correct! he left the show because of his heartthrob status. After leaving the show, he purposely chose quirky roles that downplayed his good looks. He wanted to be taken seriously as an actor and do interesting roles.
I wasn’t much of a tv watcher, especially while raising my kids. I never even knew about this show. But I’ve been watching it all on TH-cam now. It’s an amazing series that really does teach something in every show. They touch on so many problems that kids really go through in school. Kudos! 🩷🩷
I worked at a nightclub in Vancouver back then that was a regular haunt for JD and other celebs filming in Vancouver back then. He was living in a small, really dated 2nd floor apartment above a record shop called ZULU records on West 4th Ave in the Kitsilano area of Van. JD was a very shy, unassuming guy based on my interactions with him.
This is when Johnny is trying to say nice things about a show he hated being in. He couldn't hide it. He looks exhausted trying to think of something to say.😂
Johnny was just BSing this whole interview because he didn't care about this show at all. He was miserable and wanted off the show but was under contract.
It wasn't so much the show he hated, but it was the fact being on that (and the people pulling the strings) turned him into a product, selling someone to the masses that wasn't true to who he was, and he hated being painted as something he wasn't. It was more that aspect he fought and won against than the actual show itself.
Johnny Depp might not have liked being on 21 Jump Street to be honest if he would not have done 21 Jump Street he probably would not have been popular I'm just going to be honest I don't even think he even realizes that he would not have been as popular if not popular at all if he was not on 21 Jump Street because he didnt even become a star off of nightmare on Elm Street or Platoon which spoke volumes about where his career was before 21 Jump Street he couldn't even land the lead in the 1986 Thrashin.
There was always racism and homophobia, bigotry in general, but it was either put clear out on display back then or hid better, whereas now no one cares about how much hate they breed or the impact it has on actual lives.
Chewing something helps people with ADHD concentrate, so probably that's one of the reasons; he clearly had to force himself through this interview, it would've helped.
He lived in France for near on 14 years and spent a crap ton of time here in the UK. Some people merely absorb accents more than other people, but it's not fake. Fake is when you intentionally put on a rubbish accent or completely remove it on purpose, but when it happens naturally due to time spent elsewhere, it's merely a mash up of all the accents you've been around regularly.
@@xRainbowCloud Well said, I totally agree. He has created his own unique Voice Inflection. I loved the way young Johnny spoke, but now his deep slow toned voice is also mesmerising to listen to ....I believe it is a combination of many accents he has portrayed in films. He is Very Versatile....Love Johnny.

cigarette, gum, and toothpick...oral fixation....and the 80s rocked
@@michaelfrazia4569 He has ADHD, oral fixation is the standard for our kind; it helps us focus on what we're actually meant to be doing.
GOD BLESS YOU JOHNNY DEPP. I LOVE WATCHING 21 JUMP STREET.

right? now he just sounds like jack sparrow 24/7 lmao
@@sleepysiren9883 He lost his original accent because he played so much character which is that character has their own accent.😕
@@sleepysiren9883 he played that character one and off for so many years..I think it just automatically jumps out sometimes

What a great time in history. I bet things aren't that way in Hollywood anymore
An actor that cares. That's Johnny Depp.
Johnny chewing on a toothpick omg... hope he out grew that💋
Apparently johnny depp signed a 5 year contract. But used lawyers to only do 3-4 season.
21 jump street. Could of lastest 7-10 years.

Johnny hated the last two season of the show. Goodness he is so handsome.
I wish the new generation would watch this. So much racism now. I'm not used to it. I am from this generation.
There was less racism in the 80s?
@@Crunchy19178 Yes
I can't find any season 4 😭 i really enjoyed watching it!!!

there is more racism now than ever !

WHY DIDN'T SOMEONE TELL HIM TO GET RID OF THAT TOOTH PICK AND I ALSO BELIEVE JOHNNY IS BEING A SMART ASS IN THIS INTERVIEW
I always wonder why he had a stick in his mouth-

Nice to hear the real Johnny Depp original before he got he’s weird fake accent…
I work with actors almost
thirty years now and that
it is requested to loose your
accent. the way he talks now
is not fake .
